Given our success with reclamation projects, I think we should sign Tillman this offseason and rebuild him.

He could be the 2018 version of hill for us!

They couldn't guarantee him a slot in the rotation. A minor league offer would have been a slap in Hill's face.

I also think they would not come close to the money he ended up getting.

I don't think Hill was worried about being insulted. He had just been pitching on Long Island in the Independent League when we signed him. It was about money. He is in his upper 30's with a history of injuries. He needed to capitalize on his remaining time. He would have taken a major league deal anywhere.

We have been successful at this?

I never said he was worried about being insulted, and I even wrote in bold.

At the very least I think DD deserves some credit for the Cora hiring. Cora was the guy some people here had at the top of their list, and DD moved in to get him swiftly and decisively.

He is very quick with offseason moves. In the past, he's always been quick to strike with FA signings and trades. This year, he already re-signed a few MiLB guys and put Brentz on the 40 man roster.

I agree...and this feels particularly important in a year when two other playoff clubs ended up firing their managers as well. Not that DD could have known that, but nailing down the hottest name on the managerial market before the Nats and Yanks had even started looking was big.

he did try to offer Houston Groome until Jeff Lunhow reminded him he doesnt actually need to blow up the farm to hire a manager......

Ben actually did trade a player for Farrell...

Come on - Doesn't whoever the GM was when Cora played for us get the credit? Without that wonderful experience, I'm sure that he never would have come back. Theo and Ben must be given some credit for this don't you think.

Need to dig deeper.

If Grady Little pulls Pedro earlier and the Sox win in '03, Nomar is never traded and Todd Walker would have been re-signed. Rentawreck would never have signed in 2005 and Cora wouldn't have had to be brought in to shore up the IF defense.

I like it - Is this where I say thanks Ben? He must have at least been alive at the time these events happened.

Dombrowski does indeed deserve credit for the Cora hiring. Well done, Dave.

Too bad he then turned around and hired La Russa. It's almost like he's trying to cancel out the good in hiring Cora.

La Russa has certainly embraced sabermetrics moreso than most, if not all, other old school managers.

If he is not in the dugout making his asinine signature moves (which he made with some bizarre frequency, it was almost like he wanted one to be his legacy), I think he'll be pretty harmless. Possibly even beneficial...

This site has its share of negative nellies who express their concerns crudely. We should be willing to give the moves a fair chance before filling the site with negative vibrations. LaRussa is a hall of fame baseball man abd ay well be a help in selecting coaches and players.

Red Sox stayed under the MLB luxury tax in 2017, resetting the penalties. “No,” said Dombrowski when asked if they would stay under again

That was kind of obvious. That was the whole reason for resetting the penalties.

DD gets a pass by reason of the constraints he faced during last season. He will have more freedom for the 2018 season but it is still somewhat limited by the large contracts overhanging for another year. As far as LaRussa is concerned, I think the move made was a good one. Adding a very experienced and capable former anager in an advisory role makes sense to me.

It was obvious, but some posters had it as a topic of discussion a few weeks ago.

Dombrowski doesn't need a pass for this year or last year. He put contending teams on the field both years. The team getting knocked out in the first round of the playoffs is not his fault.

As far as hiring LaRussa goes, once again, I just don't see the need. Roenicke was hired as Cora's bench coach to provide that experience and to complement Cora. IMO, Dombrowski should have hired a VP that could challenge his views a little more, rather than someone who seems like he would be in complete agreement with them.

I did not mean that as a knock against you for posting that.

I was just saying that I think we all say that coming.
