With Devers at 3b, we really don't have much to bitch about. We could upgrade 1b/dh with a guy with more power and maybe another starter but overall were in pretty good shape unless the injury bug hits us. I know its a touchy subject, but I really don't miss Pedroia in the line up. No doubt he has a great glove, but Nunez hits, runs, and so far to me is a piece we were really missing on this team.

If Pedey was back, we could rest Bogey or sit Moreland.

The real comp is do you prefer Pedey over Moreland or a slumping (maybe) Bogey in the line-up?

Bogey was putting the bat on the ball last night. He just needs to work his way through it. Moreland is just a mediocre hitter that is easily replaceable.

i think it goes back to the Machado takeout. pedey might want to rethink how he handled that one by throwing his teammates under the bus....

Yeah I remember all that. Living in Maryland or course they had a different slant on the retaliation. So what is the prognosis? He's as tough as they come, for him to go on the DL twice tells me it's more serious than just needing rest.

I'm certain the O's fans are parroting what Showalter & Machado are saying, that the slide was clean and all a part of the game.

From this Red Sox fan's perspective it was a cheap shot to the same leg that was already injured. Now due to that cheap shot Pedey is missing time on a regular basis while Machado plays on.

Am I pissed about it? Yeah. I am.

Farrell said that Pedey will be on the DL for longer than the minimum 10 days this time, but they do expect him to play again this year. I'm guessing that as long as the team is doing well, they will keep him on the DL until mid September, then bring him back to get tuned up for the playoff run.

once sep 1 hits they can take him off the DL. expanded roster.

“It’s nothing out of the ordinary. That’s Devers,” said Sea Dogs catcher Jordan Procyshen, a teammate for three seasons.

“I think he’s not going to let any moment be too big for him,” said Sea Dogs teammate Mike Olt, a former major leaguer with the Cubs and White Sox. “His natural ability will take over.”

“I don’t know what people are surprised about this,” tweeted former Sea Dogs infielder Mauricio Dubon (now in the Brewers’ organization). “He’s been doing this since he signed!”

“He doesn’t just want to be good. He wants to be great. And he works hard at it.” Febles praised Devers’ defense, which has greatly improved since 2015, when he was considered a liability at third base.

That could be also. Good point about expanded rosters.

Lots of accolades already for Devers but it is good to remember Judge was getting the same and more earlier in the year and has fallen back to earth. In my opinion, Devers will continue to do well, but there will be bumps along the way for him.

Of course, but I doubt he can ever be as bad as Pablito-Rutledge-Marrero-Lin-Hernandez-Holt-Hill-Moncada-Middlebrooks-Herrera-Cecchini-Rivero-Snyder-Ciriaco-Punto...

0-3 last night. Clearly a mistake bringing him up and ruining his career. Should have traded him when his stock was high for a veteran middle reliever.

Devers now has 10 max speed sprints so he qualifies on on statcast's rankings. One of the fastest 3B in MLB, ranking in the top 25% overall.

Lol.

Please don't repeat that idea. DD may hear you.

I had no idea that "max speed sprints" were a thing.

He does not look like he is that fast. Maybe it's because of his strange gait.

How do his speed numbers compare to Betts or Beni?

Gaaaaahhh!! Who are all these stiffs? (In the sense of "What a bunch of schmoes", not "I don't understand why Moonslav just posted a list of random names.".) I've never even heard of Herrera, Rivero, or Snyder.

Not much talk of Devers of late. His bat has cooled off and he had a tough spell at third base. It appears Farrell got down on him as well. What I see is the kid is struggling at 3rd although has a good arm and does react to the ball well but his throws are slow to develop and inaccurate. He still is one of our true power guys and has a good swing so I would like to see him get back into the lineup and do some damage. Next year, someone has suggested he might do better as a 1st baseman. That thought may just prove to be the best place for him and perhaps we look to a rookie or we go out and get a third baseman. I predict a lot of changes coming for next year anyway and this would jut be one more.

It looks like there are better 3Bmen available than 1Bmen. Since Devers seems to have some issues to work out at 3B, it seems logical to at least consider signing or trading for a 3Bman and moving Devers to 1B.

That's a dumb idea.

Devers is still very young and while he does need work at 3rd defensively, there is nothing that is not easily correctable.

Moving him to first would perpetuate a problem and add to it.

If he gets too big then you move him.

If there is nothing but schlock available on the market for 1st, just resign Moreland.

Nah. It's not time to move him yet.

I certainly would prefer to let Devers improve at 3B and stay there, but I'm not a big Hosmer fan. I don't see any sure fire big FA 1Bman this winter, so that is why I suggested the idea. It's not like Devers is a great defender at 3B, so in a way it would solve two problems "perpetrate" one.

We could possibly trade for Votto, but he want's to stay in Cincy. There's Abreu on the White Sox, but he's not a big difference maker.

To me, trading for Donaldson or signing Moustakas might be the best choice.

Notice I said "might". I'm not sold on the idea yet either, but do you have a better idea on acquiring a big bat this winter?

He's gotta work on that hez before his throw.

It seems like something that is easily correctable, but by trying to fix it, he could get more wild with his throws.

Time will tell.

Moving Devers to 1B and picking up a 3B is certainly worth considering if the market is stronger for third basemen. I wouldn't make the move because of any issues that Devers is having because moving him for that reason seems rather rash. But if we can improve our overall team significantly more by picking a a 3B over a 1B, it should be considered.

The 1b market is weak. The best source of power might well be Mark Reynolds.

But really the Sox still have Hanley and Swihart for 1b, and could just sign DH. Former Dombrowski reclamation project JD Martinez is a good guess...

Agreed.

Unless we trade for a 1Bman, there's no FA 1bman equal to Moustakas.

Donaldson would likely cost much less than Votto or Stanton.

Swihart for 1b?
