Farrell on WEEI says he hopes Devers gives a spark to the bottom third of the order. "We need to string together base hits."

Wasn't Lin a spark for them?

Farrell still thinks Red Sox power issues aren't a concern. Said it's coincidental. Expected slight drop off without Ortiz but not like this.

"Coincidental" is code for 'randomness' for those old school managers. ;)

Well yes, but what's he supposed to say? "Holy crap, my guys, the little weenies, can't hit for s***. Screw them."

You know, the kind of trenchant analysis we fans give of the situation.

I'm not sure why counting a player's first year or two against him is logical (see JBJ and Bogey's career numbers).

Most players improve on their numbers after year 2. They continue improving until they reach prime. I think it was fair to expect slight improvement from Bogey & JBJ. It's hard to expect improvement from a year like Betts, but his age curve could have suggested one.

I did not expect Leon to improve, but I expected Vaz to get better and the loss of Hanigan and Holaday's putrid offense would make us about even at catcher from 2016 to 2017.

Beni had a small sample size last year, so using his .835 number as a mark to improve from might be too much to expect.

HanRam & Pedey are still in prime. I didn't expect an improvement from 2016 or 2015-2016 combined, but expecting about the same was not really wishful thinking. I would agree that their decline should not be called "under performing"--same with Leon.

Overall, even minus Papi's 2016 numbers from the 2016 totals, we've seen a pretty significant decline. Maybe "massive" was hyperbole, but to me, we've clearly under performed as a whole.

Looking at splits are also illustrative. I mentioned before that Bogey typically has a good first half and then declines in the second half. His july performance has been way below the norm and might be attributed to the injury he sustained, although he was already slumping at that time.

He hasn't been watching the rest of the order.

I am not knocking what Farrell said. I was supporting my opinion about the large degree of randomness in the game of baseball, which many people don't seem to agree with. Pretty much every day you hear or read something abut how baseball is coincidental, quirky, funny, crazy, unpredictable, lucky, etc. In other words, random.

Yeah, no kidding. Pretty much the whole line up needs a spark.

Last night Betts 0-6 and Bogey 0-5. These were two of our killer bees who have to contribute to the team and both haave been slumping. All these long extra inning games, the long road trip to the west coast and faacing good to very good pitching has added up to a general malaise but some came out of it last night but Betts is a key and he has been off of late. They can always rest Bogey for a while and should, especially now Nunez is with the team.

Betts can certainly explode from time to time (8 RBI's) but he's not been consistent. His defense is extraordinary. I just wouldn't pay him $30M as many here want. Not yet anyway.

Key signings are starting pitching. Great pitching will always keep you in the game.

I think they will give Bogaerts a breather once Nunez arrives. He is playing injured.

Betts is the guy we need to get going. He's playing awesome defense, but he has not been right offensively. He probably needs a breather too, but it's hard to give him a day off.

No fire.

No desire.

Lacking fundamentals:

Leon walks back to the back stop, and he doesn't realize last night's winning run is going from 1st to 3rd on the WP.

HRam turns to look to LF as he rounds third to score the go-ahead run- just barely.

The beat goes on under JF's non watchful eyes.

#3 in ERA

and #21 in hitting

a bad afternoon today they will be 25th. 4 points separated these placements.

The pitcher we are facing today has a 5+ ERA. I am hopeful!

I am not one who tends to blame the manager, particularly for in game decisions. However, when the entire offense is in pretty much a season long rut, and the team seems to lack discipline, it's fair to question the manager and the coaches.

It starts with Farrell, but I'm also wondering what Chili is doing? The team as a whole is making weak contact and popping up a lot.

We are in a tailspin now. The Yankees were in a tailspin before the All Star break. Our tailspin should not be as bad as theirs because we have the Ace starting pitching to win some low scoring games. Mookie will start to hit and the offense will get a boost.

i still think that DD should get a RH first baseman with power before the trading deadline.

Team has no idea how to run the bases

Team isn't hitting

Team isn't getting along with the media

Team is starting to drop in the standings

This is the perfect storm of frustration.

I was the last to agree that Bobby V must go, so I'm not one to jump on the manager. This isn't a knee jerk reaction on my part. I've not liked JF's style and substance almost from the start.

Kimmi to paraphrase Winston Churchill, you always come to the right decision after exhausting all the alternatives.

The truth is that Farrell should have been fired after the 2015 season and Lovullo should have been named manager, regardless of Farrell's cancer. John Henry is a weak executive and didn't do what needed to be done. Now Lovullo is in Arizona, and we are stuck with this hapless fool who is running this High payroll Cadillac roster into the ground. We should be leading this division comfortably with this roster.

I too feel the frustration but think the hapless fool suggestion to typify is a little far out. He will be leading the show for the rest of this year and I hope his decision making and inspirational leadership improves. It certainly looks like that has been lacking on this team this year and the end of last.

The pitcher we are facing today has a 5+ ERA. I am hopeful!

Seattle righthander Andrew Moore, a 23-year-old rookie, posted quality starts in his first three MLB starts but has surrendered five earned runs in each of his last two starts:

https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/gl.fcgi?id=moorean02&t=p&year=2017

Today's matchup of the six-foot Moore and 6-foot-6 Red Sox ace Chris Sale reminds me of David and Goliath.

I attended a Mariner game Sunday with a sportswriter who covered Andrew Moore three years ago when the pitcher was at Oregon State University. The sportswriter was unaware of Moore's rapid ascent to the majors (over the same period the sportswriter experienced a rapid ascent in sports journalism).

Lets hope we put in our strongest lineup in support of him.

By any objective evaluation , this team is under performing. The repeated fundamental mistakes and sometimes lackadaisical play reflects poorly on the manager and coaches. Farrell has to be on the line for it. " Player's manager " or not , there definitely seems to be a lack of leadership . Too late to make a change this season. What we really need now is for the so-called " Killer Bs " to start performing up to the expectations we had for them going into the season. If they do , we certainly should be able to hold off the Yankees. Otherwise , it will be tough.

JF sucks. Why keep him at the helm?

Sometimes just a big change at the helm is enough to provide a spark.

This team has zero fire.

Zero desire.

Zero focus.

Total haplessness.

it probably is too late to make a managerial change. The change should have been made early-- end of May at the latest.

Bogaerts has a 1.4 WAR. Stunning. Are we even going to get a 2 WAR out of this guy this year? Watching him play this season is kind of like watching the movie, Titanic. Off to a good start, but then the beautiful ship sinks into the deep blue sea.

Morgan Magic started in July.
