I don't know about that Notin. It might mean not pretty. It also might mean someone with a total game. Larry might really have been one of the grittiest of all time and he could shoot it a little.

Larry gritty? The man was pure silk on the court!

"Gritty" is a term I always hear applied to the tough defenders, like Beverley or Tony Allen or Marcus Smart. ..

It is an agenda that I choose not to buy into!
Unfortunately, too many skulls of mush swallow this garbage, incorporate it and then regurgitate it in knee jerk reflex.

you and I will disagree on this one for sure notin. Gritty isn't a label heading a column of names of players who are just tough. Larry was a gritty tough assed player who would have done anything to win. hands around the Doc's neck for instance. Players of all games can be very gritty and extremely talented as well.

I agree with you. Hustle is hustle, regardless of talent level. Larry, Magic, MJ, Lebron...part of the greatness is the level of desire and effort.

I guess that it becomes just about what the words mean to us.

Hence 54 pages of the clutch thread...

I know - I was just thinking the same thing. I don't know what that says about us or if it says anything at all. I pretty sure that it isn't very important though.

I've wondered about this for awhile now. Is this team tough enough to do what it says they should do "on paper" at least? I think that Pedroia gets it as does Sale I'm pretty sure. It is a tough game and more often then not you need some tough guys to help you win.

i would have agreed with this 100% until Pedroia took the entire weekend off for a love tap to his calf......

I agree with you and i would add that Bogaert's tunked f***ing thumb doesn't make me all that happy. this is beginning to look like a candy assed bunch of protected little wannabes. time to grow up and step up and do the job. the world really isn't all that pretty and nice regardless of how much $ you make.

Just remember. These are merely professional athletes. Not bad-ass tough-guy internet posters like ourselves.

yeah - ok - You're right - i realize that not one of the very best athletes in the history of Boston sports won't be coming through that door. Not one of the hundreds that we have had.

You seem really angry at this team recently. Outside of Pedroia, I'm not sure why.

i am. I am very angry with them. I don't like that I am but I am. there is something that is bothering me about them and this incident really seems to have personified things for me. i know that I use words that perhaps mean something or maybe even more to me than they do to some. we might not agree on what they actually mean and that is ok - gritty, tough, clutch, aggressive, hard assed whatever. The Pedroia incident really troubles me. I have been a believer in him for a long time. i'm not sure where he is coming from and yes I do think that what he says and feels is very important. this is an extremely talented group of baseball players that I think as a group really lacks something. At the risk of having someone s*** on my coaching career because it was at the high school level, i will quite frankly tell anyone that I far more enjoyed coaching kids who were talented but had an edge. it was my job to humanize them. i was ok with that. it was a lot tougher to win with the proverbial talented good kids who you had to make competitive. i love the Red Sox and will continue to be a fan for life but yes i do absolutely feel that this team lacks something. coaches often call for a gut check - i used to call for a heart check on occasion. This team needs a heart check. Are they really being coached???

I'm sorry if this post is too long or just doesn't work for some but i haven't been this passionate about a Red Sox team in years. We finally have an ace, who quite honestly IMO would have hit Machado right squarely in the ass and this great debate would be over. I want more players like him even if they are not nearly as talented.

lol. no, but i also would never again use the term "gritty" or "dirt dog" to describe his candy ass.

btw - was anyone else really bothered by the fact that Pedroia sold out Barnes the other night. yeah, the pitch got a bit higher than Matt wanted it or it should have been. but does Pedroia really need to whistle over to Machado and scream like a little bitch "it wasn't me. talk to him."

eff that. if i was Matt i would lay Pedroia out.....

Then again, Pedroia played the entire '13 season with a torn tendon in his thumb sooo... maybe back off a bit huh?

I'm sorry, but I just don't see the value of "toughness" when applied to MLB, which is not a contact sport. I think it was Gene Conley, who played for the Celtics and pitched for the Red Sox, who was asked how difficult it was to transition between the two sports. He said it was not easy because it took him at least six weeks after the NBA season to get out of shape so he could play baseball. He was joking of course.

To me the one bonafide tough guy on this team is Pedroia, and I'm not so sure that's a valuable quality because sometimes he insists on playing when maybe he shouldn't.

On the other hand, I kind of admire all the lineup players who go out there and stand in the field waiting for the pitcher and hitter to go thru their little dance on almost every pitch. That's roughly 90 minutes per game of mostly standing around, but with a requirement on each and every pitch to be ready to spring into action because "getting a jump on the ball" is so important to a fielder.
