??? Being gritty and tough is racially charged? In who's world?

There are very very very few black or latino Scrappy McTuffersons the way that sort of description is applied to say, Pedroia or Eckstein. In the same vein, you see very very few white guys talked about in terms of athleticism. I am surprised this is a controversial idea.

I don't equate toughness to being 11-8 necessarily. We all know that they are talented.

11-8 through quite a bit of adversity. That is toughness.

Grit and stuff is somewhat racially charged - or at least it seems that way in application.

Also, visible toughness comes when the player makes it look tough - the appearance of high effort ...

I have a different view on this matter,. The term isn't racially charged imo. I think it is a function of Latino and black players having a tougher road to the major leagues. If they aren't top athletes with 4 or 5 big tools, they don't make it, so not many fit the "gritty" description. The term is not racially charged. It just isn't applicable to most black and Latino players. Gritty Latinos don't make it to the show. Edited by a700hitter

Yeah, where did this idea come from. I've been around the block a bunch of times.

Never heard any mention of it.

What is a Scrappy McTufferson exactly? I'm sorry that you are surprised that what you are saying is somewhat controversial.

It's what is taught in University that all sorts of innocent terms (I.e., microaggressions) are subconsciously racist or sexist. It is nonsense.

This talk of grit being a racially charged term is a bunch of happy horseshit.

Hose-A Altuve is gritty. Bert Campinaris was gritty.

Just two of many exceptions to this silly idea.

Give me a break.

Go back to clutch. At least that stupid topic has no political edge to it.

It is an agenda that I choose not to buy into!

Ted who is that ass-clown black man that played for Cincinnati and was obnoxious as national annalist for so long? I can see his face and hear his voice.

Anyways, as much as I hated that f***, he was seen as gritty.

So was Cesar Tovar who played all 9 positions in one game. If we cared to take the time, we could think of a list of blacks and Latinos who were tough gamers or crafty pitchers, but the universe of black and Latino players is a minority and most have to be top athletes to get noticed and make the majors. Not many make it on grit or toughness-'- so we are talking about a minority of a minority.

Joe Morgan. And he was tough and gritty, and so was Hal McRae. He was as tough as they come. Oops, I said "they". Please know that I was referring to all ballplayers. LOL!

There is numerous guys in different sports considered "gritty" regardless of race. I don't see it being a racial thing. The word gritty was used a lot for Juan Pierre, and is used a lot for guys like Patrick Beverley and Tony Allen in NBA. This topic is absurd

Of course. When people agree with me, I to think that it is reasonable.

I DO wish we could 'upvote' certain posts!

In my experience, those who complain most vociferously about what is taught in universities don't spend much time in them.

In the NBA, "gritty" means "can't shoot"...

so now i am confused. We finally see something that might resemble real toughness and teammate support and the teammate being supported is caught on camera seemingly throwing someone from his dugout under the bus. Now, don't get me wrong, it might not be a popular opinion here but I don't think Machado really did anything to warrant being thrown at. I believe that they should have waited on this one for the right time to come within the actual confines of the game itself. If he had hit him in the ribs maybe ok but throwing at the head? Sorry - I don't think so. Can we really afford to lose barnes for any time? With all that being said, it looks to me as though these guys want to play with a harder edge and are going through a process to get there. I would have felt better if Pedroia had just touched base with Machado privately after the game. I'll be very anxious to see what comes of this. Not even Pedroia gets a free pass here.

I don't know about that Notin. It might mean not pretty. It also might mean someone with a total game. Larry might really have been one of the grittiest of all time and he could shoot it a little.

You would be wrong this time. I have a BA, JD and an LLM in Taxation, getting my last degree at age 28.

Its usually labeled to guys who play defense excessively hard and hustle all game, it just so happens most of those guys can't shoot. They're usually guys people hate playing against too. Draymond Green's, Dellys, Tony Allens, etc.

I do agree with you but the athletes I consider gritty aren't necessarily limited to doing stuff that tends not to get the big time notice. In basketball, my idea of gritty might for instance be the guy who follows his shots - dives for loose balls - takes the charge - is satisfied with layups and not dunks and realizes that sometimes the best use of the 3 point line is to create space. I get what you are saying though and agree.
