I'm surprised as well as disappointed. I thought they'd get more for him than a High-A infielder. It's looking more and more like a salary dump all the time.

If it is a salary dump, maybe DD is positioning to add EE.

or stay under the limit. Either is a good possibility.

My office is NE philly area so i am getting the Phan reaction now and a Phan breakdown of Tobias. will share later.

personally this is a sad day for me. i was at Fenway Park 01-Sep-2007 with my wife and son when he threw his no-no. was amazing atmosphere that i will never forget.

Call me crazy (and I have been called much worse), but I still think that DD and EE want to make this happen.

I don't see a downside to this for the Phils unless it's the salary vs. injury gamble. They gave up a low ML'er for him. This could be the steal of the century.

I saw his MLB debut against the Angels. There was a lot of hoopla around his arrival and the sky was the limit for his career. That was a long time ago.

Ok. You're crazy. :D

Signing EE now would create a huge logjam at DH/1B. It's an enticing idea nontheless

Good acquisition by the Phillies. It is looking like a salary dump by DD.

This trade boggles my mind when I think about it in reverse.

If the LT weren't an issue and we had a chance to pick up a guy with ace stuff but a history of injuries in exchange for a High-A player we'd be cumming all over ourselves, we'd be so happy.

Speaking of which, WTF do we need a High-A 2B for

I agree. It looks and smells like a salary dump.

A straight salary dump for sure. I'm glad I didn't have any expectation of getting anything significant back for him.

It does make one wonder if DD wants that money for other purposes...otherwise we probably could have just as easily made this trade in March.

Here is the big question for TalkSox. Has this caused MVP to faint? I think that he (like I) firmly believed that the Buchholz saga would continue in Boston.

A few thoughts...

1) I figured a trade like this would happen, but I expected the other team to be a contender. Maybe Philly will trade Buch at the deadline and get more than what they gave up for him. Maybe they have fooled themselves into thinking they can win in 2017.

2) Did any money change hands?

3) Who was the poster who claimed teams never take an option and then trade that player?

4) 700's point about EE would make total sense had we not signed Moreland. $13.5M buch + $5.5M Moreland is probably close to what EE will end up getting!

Good point about the timing. Injuries happen in Spring Training. We lost ER in the first week last year in March. Buch was an insurance policy. There is probably a reason why DD did it now. It is not like he got a Blue Chip prospect in return.

According to what I read the Phils are assuming all of Clay's salary.

uh oh. maybe something we dont know bothering pedey?

Don't even think that!

Besides, if something were bothering Pedey DD would be aiming higher than a High-A 2B. I hope!!

Wow, they got someone in return for this idiot?!?! I would have just taken a bag of rocks.

Thats pretty much what we got. A bag of rocks. Buchholz was worth more than that. Bad trade.

Definitely a salary dump. There was no interest in Buch by other teams. It seems like we were shopping him pretty heavily, but every team wanted Pom instead. Pom is much cheaper. DD wanted to move $.

So the RS apparently need more help at 2b than they do at pitching? If this were part of something else, wouldn't that 'something else' come first? You can always waive or 'salary-dump' someone later, no? (or is there some abstruse clause in the CBA making it advantageous to get rid of salary first?)
