I've said it before: Price was an overpay but that is what it would cost any team to get him. Pitching is mad overvalued, because very good pitching is in short supply. Except by Ben, who felt comfortable blowing up the rotation with no solid, credible plan B. The Sox painted themselves badly into a corner here and their hand was forced if they had aspirations of actually competing for division titles and championships any time soon.

I don't disagree, but just imagine if Hanram and Porcello had their 2016 seasons in 2015, and Pablo didn't bloat into a blimp?

We might not have won a ring (or even made the WS or playoffs), but Ben might still be here.

And if the Queen had balls she would be the King. It would take a lot of "ifs" to win a ring in 2015.

They wouldn't have had to win a ring for Ben to save his job... maybe.

I did it just for you......all is well.....I love the back and forth here.....I guess I need to get a life!!!!!

I figured the avatar was meant for me after the Thelma and Louise Part 2 post.

I know I am being a little over the top with my 'cliff' posts, just for fun. It's certainly not a foregone conclusion. That said, I do think it's a very real and legitimate concern. And, I am never going to be a fan of the 'win now at any cost' philosophy, which I honestly believe the team is following.

Baseball is my life... ;)

And rightly so...I share those concerns as well, as do most of us, I think. However, Buchholz is hardly ideal depth/protection for the rotation as he is inconsistent, frequently injured, and (for what he usually provides) expensive. We should be able to do better.

Fair enough.

This is what I keep saying. IMO, Ben put a contender on the field in both 2014 and 2015. In one of those years, the Sox were the overwhelming favorite, by both computer rankings and baseball analysts, to win the division. That is all a GM can do - field a team that looks good on paper. What happens on the field is out of his control.

I am not a fan of the Price contract or Dombrowski's philosophy, but I don't blame Dombrowski for Price's less than expected performance so far. If Sale falls flat on his face and/or the Sox do not make the playoffs this year, that will not be Dombrowski's fault. He did his job as far as this year's team is concerned.

Even with the two last place finishes, Ben should have been allowed to keep his job for one more year.

He finished last 3 out of 4 years.

2012 does not count.

He finished last 2 out of 3 years, with a World Series thrown in there just for kicks.

so then it counts in Theo? It counts for one or the other. I pick Ben.

Two words: Larry Lucchino

No one could overcome the Bobby Valentine fiasco.

Ben deserved his firing but the title is something he should be linked to...but back to Clay - good riddance....

So did Andrews drop the ball on this when he recommended non-surgery two years ago? It'll be interesting to see what Buch has when he comes back.

He may just retire.

NEW YORK — The $13.5 million risk on Clay Buchholz produced two starts, a 12.27 ERA, and arm surgery Tuesday. It served as a reminder for Phillies president Andy MacPhail of how fragile and expensive veteran pitchers like Buchholz are. A reminder that the Phillies, if they are to jump in the standings, must develop young pitchers.

Should be a reminder to all GMs.

Don't the Phillies have good young pitching?!? Isn't that their only saving grace right now?

I don't think Nola, Velasquez and Eickhoff are chopped liver.

Maybe, he's 32. But if I were him, I'd get the surgery and work my way back as a reliever. s***, Fernando Rodney is still Closing and He sucks.

He's the same age and injury history (and career WAR!!!) as Justin Masterson. Masterson is trying to work his way back in AAA. I don't see Buchholz as being the type of guy to sign an MiLB deal. He's made enough $ where he probably doesn't see the point in playing the next few years for less than he makes in one month now.

i believe since he was on 1 year options they "decided" to ride it out and see what they could get out of the arm without having to shut him down for surgery.... just my guess.....
