By the way, we just signed Moreland to a one year deal as well. Not sure if someone else scooped me on this. Per Ken Rosenthal. Edited by FredLynn

Apparently Moreland, the GG winner last year, will be the 1B and Hanley will be the new DH most of the time (according to Farrell).

Yeeeaaah, we're probly keeping Buchholz then and besides an additional RPer I think we're done.

There is no way you're keeping Buchholz. In this market, that suckbag is worth $13 mil, so teams will line up thinking he can grow some balls in their town. You might get some prospects for him rather than just a straight salary dump as well.

Moreland makes little sense to me. You had the chance at Holliday, who fits your team a lot better than a lefty with serious issues with lefties. He should still put up decent production, but I'd have thought a flip of the two made more sense (Moreland in YS and Holliday st the Fens).

Either way, today was as important directionally of any day I can remember in recent years. Last year, you dealt some top 10 parts, but this year you dealt damn near all of them. It's a clear indication that the sox are in it to win it the next 3 years or so.

Last year Moreland had a .799 OPS v LHP and .700 v RHP-as well as being the SI GG winner at 1B. And yes, we are going to keep Buchholz.

Moreland has a sub .700OPS over the past 3 seasons vs lefties.

Yes, the $5.5 Mil will give us a left handed first base hitting GG winner and allow Hanley to move to DH. Against left handed pitching we could move Hanley back to first and make Young the DH. I think DD made a reasonable move with Moreland. Now, what to do about third. There was mention of Hernandez as a possibility as well as Devers, should Sandoval not work out.

I'd rather have Pablo at DH than entrust him to 3B again.

Didn't Pablo get skinny before and then fat again?

I mean he looked pretty darn good in some of these pictures but I'll reserve judgement until he actually PLAYS well and fit.

I'm an optimist though, and America loves a good comeback story.

I'm not jumping for joy over this. I will give Panda a second chance though. Shaw and Moncada have been dealt. I like Holt. He just isn't the answer over there. He's good in the sub role.

I've mentioned Holliday a couple times, but his better days are past. Over the last three years, he's gone down to being barely above average

He's cheaper - neither are very good.

I like this move.

Against righties, Moreland plays 1b and Hanley goes to the DH spot. Against lefties, Moreland goes to the bench, Hanley plays 1b, Young will DH or play the OF, moving one of the starting outfielders to the DH spot to help keep the starting outfielders fresh.

I think I preferred Adam Lind, but Moreland's defense might help more than the offensive differential.

HanRam has said he's on board with DH'ing some, so maybe this will help keep him stay healthy and get more PAs.

We can play Young at DH vs most lefties, and we can rotate some other players through the DH slot to get some rest, and maybe lessen their need for full days off.

Which Moreland shows up? (Or, somewhere in between?)

vs RHPs:

2016: .221/.293/.407/.700

2015: .294/.348/.528/.876

Career: .258/.321/.457/.778 (28 HRs per 650 PAs)

I feel like we traded Shaw and them signed Shaw for 1yr@$5.5M. Edit: Only trading Shaw helped us net Sale. Edited by Emp9

I don't know if this signing is really is going to have a big impact on this team. I feel like the direction of this team is going more towards pitching, rather than having an offense that scores 10 runs a game. The Red Sox had that offense last year, and got swept out of the first round of the playoffs. That's why you're seeing them getting more impact pitchers rather then hitters.

You mean Thornburg.

Not only impact pitchers, but defense as well. I think that is a bigger reason for signing Moreland than his offense, since he will presumably be playing quite a bit of 1B over Hanley.

Me either, in fact, I don't get it. Is this supposed to replace Papi? Moreland is supposed to get time at first so HanRam can go DH? Uh uh, that ain't gonna work long term, we need a REAL hitter in the middle of this order to at least somewhat replace Ortiz. Moreland is too expensive for a backup/complimentary piece, and too tame for an Ortiz replacement. Don't get this move.

He's okay for a platoon vs RHPs. He's a great defensive 1Bman. DH'ing HanRam vs RHPs may extend his career and give him more PAs this year. Young can DH vs LHPs.

Hopefully, Devers will be ready next year, and we can move Pablo to 1B or use HanRam at 1B more.

Well, that pitching better pan out, because I'm not sure about the offense. The big numbers last year were very deceptive, I said that during the season. They rarely came from behind and were very inconsistent.

They won 94 games. During that 11 game streak they came from behind left and right. They lost because Cleveland outpitched them plus they had Andrew Miller. They didn't have anybody like him in their pen. Not many teams do though.

What's the backup plan for 3B if Sandoval is unproductive? Holt is not the answer. I hope DD has a backup plan. As of right now, I don't see any alternatives, and there should be.
