When games get into the 8th and 9th innings of close games, it is pretty standard to get the bullpen ready to go to lock down the game. Once the home run was hit, it was a 3 run game. Price was over 90 pitches. He wasn't going to get a complete game at that rate. We were going to need a pitcher in the 9th. A couple of guys should have been tossing in the 8th to get ready. After the first hit after the HR, there should have been a visit to the mound by Willis. Then Leon should have had one or 2 conferences with Price. There are ways to get your pen some time to warm up. Farrell gets paid handsomely not to mess up those late innings. The notion that the Mariners offense happened too quickly for Farrell to react is nonsense. Giving him an excuse is not sensible.

It's not an excuse, it's an observation.

If you are awake sometimes you can avoid getting eaten by the bear.

I sense some criticism of Farrell in this post. That is wrong, however, since John Farrell is perfect and should not be criticized even when he clearly, absolutely and undeniably f***ed up.

Price had 89 pitches through 7 innings. not 1 manager on the f@cking planet has a reliever warming up when his "ace" has that few pitches and is in the midst of pitching a gem. not 1. unfortunately David Price remembered he is a #4 pitcher once the 8th inning started. Eff Price. this L is on him. those that want to blame Farrell in this instance are wrong.

Completely agree. I notice opposing managers having more active bullpens throughout the game.

That's a fair point, but the more often you get relievers up to warm up, the more you risk 'overuse'.

Price was cruising until the 8th inning. He was only at 89 pitches. There was no reason to have someone warming up to start the inning, 'just in case'. There was no indication whatsoever that Price wouldn't be able to get through that inning.

Now I agree that he should have gotten someone up after the single following the HR, and he could have used any number of stall tactics to get the reliever ready, but that inning did unfold very, very quickly.

Dear f***ing Lord you're annoying with this BS.

Pitchers tend to lose it suddenly late in the game, and Price got hit on the leg with a hard drive 2 innings before. That could have been swelling or getting stiff. Farrell got caught with his pants down. He wasn't prepared.

not "aces".....

if Farrell is guilty of anything it is believing that his "ace" is an "ace".

right. so you are the one guy on the planet that has a reliever warming up after the 7th? when Price has under 90 pitches. and is cruising. OK.

sure.

Not what I'm referring to. I'm referring to your constant ragging on Price. He was excellent last night, ran out of gas and Farrell got caught napping. But it's all Price's fault because he remembered he's a 4th starter. Where do you even come up with this nonsense?

I couldn't have scripted a worse ending to a game.

Prices pitches very well, but the team is now .500 in his starts.

Abad keeps our record of recent acquisitions good starts at about 0 percent.

Beni's first ML game, and he ends up as the last chance and takes a called third strike.

All this after it looked like the last two late wins might have got us going on a nice streak.

apologies Moon...but 4 Earned Runs in 7 IP is not pitching "very well"......

ran out of gas after 89 pitches? he was excellent last night? are you serious? he was excellent for 7 innings and then pitched like playoff price for the 8th.

4 Earned in 7IP. thats like a Clay start.

It was Farrell's job to limit the damage to 7 innings and 1 or 2 runs -- because he should have been removed after the single following the Home Run.

If 7 shutout innings is not excellent work for a starter regardless of pitch count, you either have unrealistic expectations or you're a bumbling fool. I'm betting on a little bit of both with you.

It's Price's fault! Aces have to manage the game too!

Sometimes it's just s***** luck though, Slash. If Price had been less efficient last night and his pitch count was 105 after 7 he would have been out of there with a 7 inning shutout. Not all 7 inning 4 ER starts are equal.

sorry UN. but this isnt little league where the game ends at 6 innings. this is big boy baseball and you play 9. Price started the game with a 4.26 ERA and after this "excellent work" his ERA went UP.

No it isn't. It is an excuse, because other than stopping a play as it is occurring, there is plenty of time for a manager to make moves in a baseball game.

absolutely true HFX. we can certainly spin it and give Price the benefit of the doubt once again that he pitched great. i'm fine with that. but im not fine with Farrell being blamed for this Loss.

This is a completely honest question that I ask to clear confusion on my part: Do you actually watch baseball?

Slash, much as I hate doing it, I'm about to insult you. When it comes to Price, you are starting to sound like andrewmitch used to about Buchholz.

no one said he has to be the manager. my point is that an Ace needs to pitch better than a 4.30 era. you feel differently. thats fine.

That would probably be the best Clay start of the year.

Price never put the winning run on base, so under no circumstances is the Loss on him. It is either on Farrell or Abad.
