I'll still take my chances with 20 yr old kopeck. 6'3" 200+ lbs. 100MPH from Texas like Clemens. Espy real small, but should be a very good pitcher perhaps a great one. It's all a crap shoot boys. Have to take your best shot. Just as long as it doesn't turn out to be Bagwell for f... Larry Anderson.

Size. Dombrowski is not a fan of smaller-framed pitchers with high velocity as starters.

That's been the story with Espinoza, but he's also been growing and filling out. I believe he's grown 2 inches and put on 20 LB's. At 18 he might not be done growing.

I don't know why people want position players stacked up in the minors stuck behind our young major leaguers when they can be used to get us needed pitching. Keeping our prospects will not get us pitching.

Never said i didnt want pitching...just not as high on JF as some is all. Giving up Moncada Benintendi and Swihart is a big over pay regardless. Not for one starter. No way.

He's about 1-2 inches shorter than him and 20 LB's at 2 years younger. You could easily project Epsinoza to be close to that size in several years when he's done growing and fills out. And his name is Kopech.

I'm sure he tried to get him with other players, but considering we want to jumpstart the second half, all had to be taken into consideration. Hey, it may not work, but at least he's not waiting until were 8 games out to make his moves. We still may s*** the bed, but he's trying..

If I'm trading a blue chip prospect, I better get a guy more proven back in return. I like Pomeranz, but not for Espinoza.

Agreed. They're serious about making a run this year.

"When Do Men Stop Growing?

Men grow the most from 12 to 16 with the increase in height being as high as 12 inches in normal cases. Boys actually gain the most weight during this period, too. The growth during this time period is mostly in the extremities with the legs, feet, arms and hands growing the fastest. It is for this reason that most teenage boys look very clumsy as they start getting accustomed to the changes in their body. Hair starts to appear all over the body during this period while change in the vocal cords occurs. The skin starts to get very oily during this period too and usually leads to acne. However, by 18, the body grows to its fullest with the shoulders getting broad and the body becoming more muscular.

So, the most appropriate answer to questions like ‘what age do boys stop growing’ or ‘when do guys stop growing’ would be 18. However, there are a few cases where men continue to grow till 21 as well while there can be the odd exceptional case where a man might continue to grow till 25."

Espinoza is as tall as he is ever going to be. Maybe he could put on some fat or muscle, but his frame now is likely as big as its ever going to be.

I'd hate the trade if it wasn't Dombrowski doing it to be honest. But again, dude has made making trades like this with his team being the clear winner in the end an art form.

I hope so. As long as Pomeranz pitches well, I won't complain.

Yah, sure is a tough one. Hopefully Pom pitches well enough to make us all happy. If not, ouch.. At least right now our staff on paper is much better. I hope..

Also I wouldnt go by his height on soxprospects..they always list shorter guys a couple inches taller. Bogey was 6'3 at one time..Pedey was 5'9.. AE is probably about 5'10, 6' with cleats

I'll be interested to see what Hill and Hellickson (my two stated targets of preference) go for in the weeks to come.

If we can get one of those two, then we're really in business.

I never said I expected him to grow a lot more. I put on 2 inches after the age of 18, he's already put on at least 1 more since he signed. He still has the capacity to put on some weight to his frame. Standing 6 foot 1 6 foot 2 isn't huge, but it's not exactly like you're standing at 5 foot 10. If you read the updated scouting reports on Anderson Espinoza you'd know that he's put on some size and it's less of an issue with him.

Anderson is not probably 5'10 he's about 6'1 and he's put on at least 20 LB's since he's entered the organization.

The fact of the matter is that DD is simply not a fan of undersized pitchers with upper-echelon velocity. The thought creeped into my mind that he may trade him, but I didn't think he'd go through with it so quickly, and for anything less than an established, upper-echelon SP. Maybe they project Pomeranz to become that. Only time will tell.

Well depending on what you reference "few cases" turns into "many men" will continue to grow until the are 21 and some 25. considering he's put on an inch the past year I don't think it's highly unrealistic he grows another inch. Regardless he's not as small as he was when he signed and Pedro comparisons (size wise) are no longer valid.

Read the article. Its not made up. He has put on "some size" where? Shoulders? Muscle? Fat? As the article says (and there are other articles that substantiate it) the body of a guy has generally grown to its fullest by age 18 with a FEW CASES where men continue to grow until 21. Its possible; its very unlikely that he will be one of those few cases. Espinoza is likely as big as he is ever going to be. That said, I don't think size is a huge factor; its heart and talent. Time will tell.

I don't care what the article you just googled said, how do you know that article is more accurate than the very next one that says differently? what percentage of guys stop growing at 18. Is it 50% 75% 90%??? and I don't care if Espinoza doesn't put on another inch so it doesn't really matter. He's not big, but he's not that small anymore either. I'll trust the scouting reports from baseball america and soxprospects over people who probably have not seen him recently if at all and you can go to soxprospects and look at some recent video of him and compare it to older videos....he's obviously gotten bigger. Like I said, he's not huge, but he's big enough to where it's not an issue anymore.

Ok ok..calm down. Apparently you have measured him yourself ;)

Regardles, i dont think thats the issue anyway... and I still don't think hes 6'1

I think they question the makeup

I kinda know a bit about this Hugh. People grow in height by extending the bony length towards the ends of their long bones' cartilaginous areas-the "growth plate". Bone itself cannot grow in length; only the cartilage can ossify, ie turn into bone, thereby increasing height. Fact is, by age 18 the vast majority of growth plates have disappeared and are all bone. There is no more growth in height after that. Thats just the way it works in humans. You may have been an exception; there are always exceptions. Again, I am less concerned about his height as his heart, talent, and work ethic. Now, in fact, am not concerned about him at all.

Agree completely!!! Have to have faith in someone who has a track record of successful deals.

I did not measure him myself, I just read the scouting reports and have heard from multiple reports that he's grown. I have zero reason to not trust that. I'm very calm, just because I have an opinion that differs from most of the people in here and wish to discuss it doesn't mean I'm otherwise.

Also, can you show me any proof or reason to believe they are questioning Espinozas make up? I've never heard anything bad about his make up ever, at all, not once. Where did you hear that?

I'll bet dollars to doughnuts Kopech is the guy SD actually asked for.

I was thinking this as well. Kopech is young strong and closer to being with us for sure.

One thing is certain: getting attached to prospects in the age of Dombrowski is going to be a recipe for headache.
