Owens had one BB his last start and had seemed to be turning the corner. He should get another chance at some point, but probably not this year with Boston. I'm wondering who is next? Johnson??

He will probably pitch again in September with roster expansion.

Johnson would be nice - it would be a good comeback story. Of course, who doesn't root for these kids, even the knuckleheads who fenced laptops in college.

To repeat what moonslav said, O'Sullivan isn't on the 40 man roster anymore so he isn't eligible to come up (unless they add him back on). Doubtful that happens.

probably right - although all it takes is converting a 15 day stint to a 60 day one ...

Joe Kelly, they will try to stretch him out to go at least 5 innings. If he can do it. I don't know if they want to bring a young kid up right now.

Joe Kelly has the stuff, but has a ten cent brain. But might be the pick. He might be decent for two starts, then will shat the bed and become what he is.

Joe Kelly doesn't have the stuff....throwing fastball STRAIGHT at 98 mph means nothing to the hitters. Their exit speed is faster, that's all.

Actually, it's easier than that, since we only have 39 guys on the 40 man roster right now, according to soxprospects.com. I wonder if their holding that last spot for Moncada.

I think all or DL players are either on the 60 day already or not going there as of yet.

Pitchers on the 40 man roster but not on the 25 as of now:

Wright (15 day DL)

Workman 60 day

Kelly

Brian Johnson

Noe Ramirez

Williams Jerez

Carson Smith 60 day

Roenis Elias

William Cuevas

I see only Johnson, Kelly and Elias as choices from the current 40 man roster.

Maybe Owens gets another look in 5 days.

It would be nice. His ERA in 5 games since coming back to Pawtucket is under 3. It'd be under 2 if you ignore his first start back.

I think they are holding it for trade - since they can use Moncada as a DL replacement, there is no urgency to put him on the 40 for playoff eligibility reasons.

I think Hanigan could move to the 60 without much trouble - if the Red Sox REALLY wanted to.

You are correct about DL eligibility for postseason, but no matter what or when, they still need to put him on the 40 man to call him up even it's just for a September cup of coffee.

Or one of Moon's absolute favorite player Bryce Brentz who shot himself in the leg.

I forgot about Hanigan, so there is a chance to add 2 to the 40 man roster.

Hanigan is close to going on a rehab assignment, I thought they would wait until they expand on 9/1. Haladay hasn't been that bad handling the staff from a naked eye. Whatever works I guess. I know it's about the 40man I get it.

@pawsox Brian Johnson has tossed 4 scoreless innings allowing just 2 hits with 5 strikeouts. #PawSox still lead Syracuse 1-0 middle 4.

Price had a good outing, going 8 full innings and giving up no runs. His velocity was going down as the game went on but he must have had good movement as he got a lot of strikeouts. He also used his full complement of pitches. Barnes came in with his power but gave another example of the weakness of our bullpen. At least with a 6 run lead, there was no need to bring in another pitcher and we got to give our closer some additional rest.

I've liked him more than I have liked Owens for a couple of years now. Just want him to be healthy and get a chance. If it is with us, even better.

I was surprised when Johnson took a step back for anxiety issues. Was he the one involved in car jacking?

Obviously getting Wright and E Rod will do wonders for the playoff run. Price is now on a roll. Porcello has pitched like an ace all year. Pomeranz now must be the pitcher that we traded for and not the imposter that pitched first four games.

Our bullpen however is in shambles. Luckily we scored 6 runs. Our bullpen gives up runs faster than rabbits reproducing.

Yee, that was him... he was also beaned in the melon his first eyar with the organization so hes time in the org. Has been pretty eventful...i liked him better than Owens too, so im hoping he can help the team down the stretch because Owens is a friggin mess and looks like a deer in the headlights...

Owens lost velocity and command. Usually a pitcher will sacrifice one for the other. Instead, Owens lost both

For now anyway, let's hope.

Owens was still getting swings and misses - his career swinging strikes percentage is a pretty hefty 20% (to give you some perspective CC Sabbathia's career is 17.0% in this area. Even with the dropoff this year (Owens is 16.3%, about what Sabbathia was getting in 2010).

The problem is that he is just not throwing enough strikes. We all knew coming up there would be an element of pitching backwards with him - but you still have to actually throw your fastball in the strike zone with some regularity.

Fortunately it's not too big a deal ... I mean at this point you have to say the rotation is (ducking lightning bolt) fine.

On Sunday Owens walked to many because he is afraid of contact. If another AAA start is needed I would go Johnson as well. Hopefully, Wright is back and on track this weekend and E-Rod shortly after so another AAA start is not needed.

Even the Buch bashers must be starting to wonder "what if...?"

Nice start, Clay. Just keep doing what you have to do, and who knows what might happen.
