Your offense is solid....for now. You've played a bunch of teams down on their luck and have pissed all over the faces of their pitching. The state of pitching is WAY down in the AL, Which is why the Yanquis iffense has flourished this season, right? and with the fact that the sox are hitting on all cylinders, should propel them to the league's best offense. Thing is, there are very few offensive juggernauts who have won the title without some semblance of pitching. Much better chance winning when you are scoring runs than ekeing them out. The sox right now have the 19th best ERA in baseball and the 10th in the AL, one spot behind the cauldron of pitching s*** that is the Angels. You will need pitching.

Thank you Captain Obvious.

You need Price to step up and be an ace on a contending team. You might check out Price's last two games. You need someone behind him to stand up consistently. Porcello fell last night. First time in 16 starts it wasn't quality ... I think he's been very consistent. Wright had been good before getting blasted by Houston, Well, one bad game ... track record til then was good. His game today was also good. but he might be the guy. Buchholz has been a disaster. Your 5th spot is a rotating spot of suck. ERod just re-injured his knee and is out indefinitely. I think you'll see a dry spell shortly where the balls don't fall in and the sox will fall back to earth a bit. The one thing that your hot start has given you is time. Time for DD to see who has the stamina to be in this for the long haul. And time to work on a deal. You will have to make a deal for a pitcher at some point to be a true title contender.

Coming from a fan of .... where are youse guys right now?

It's just his trademark, Dojji. He isn't offensive, very introspective and crowded with stats. I've always enjoyed his personality and posts. Top notch.

My eyesight is poor, so the bold helps. I don't mean to offend.

Farrell needs to find a better lineup spot for JBJ. I'm all for going with what works, but I'd hate to see the hitting streak end because Bradley was walked 4 times.

I agree, but it's hard to demote anybody right now. I might try:

vs RHPs

1) Betts

2) Bogey

3) Ortiz

4) Ramirez

5) JBJ

6) Pedey

7) Shaw

8) Vazquez

9) Rutledge (LF?)

7) Shaw

8) Vazquez/Hanigan

9) Rutledge

We are a quarter of the way through the season and Shaw is tied for 9th in RBIs in all of baseball. If he continues to bat fifth in that line-up all year, he would need to get injured not to reach 80 RBIs! Do you know something about his health that no one else does Moonslav? Lol

I can certainly see him getting over 80, but I think he will slump, and I think the Sox will not continue at this scoring pace, so he will not have as many opportunities.

Note: I would not bet on my hunch.

I think that the infamous "June swoon" of years past is inevitable, but I also think that Shaw is for real. He will likely come back to earth a little, but love how he is such a student of the game. You can't teach that stuff. Having an old man who played in the majors probably helps.

It's just nice to be able to watch a team that seems to have a great blend of young and old coming together as a team, relaxed, having fun.

I was gonna say something about your lengthy retirement as a possible reason ...

You've never offended me, old friend.

We've won some slugfests. The concerning number is the ERA of the rotation, which was 4.81 entering tonight and got a little worse.

Nut, The '50 Sox that hold the record for runs scored, and did so with Teddy out for a good portion of the season, had an ERA eerily close, 4.88. They won 92 games but finished 3rd in the league.

There is no doubt that the pitching needs to improve over all. The offense will surely cool off, at least every time they leave Fenway. It will be effected every time we play inter-league games away from Fenway. Yesterday and today showed just that. A couple of great defensive plays by the Royals snuffed out some important runs and that is going to happen, too.

I'm not saying anything new. But I have high hopes that the offense stays strong. On last incredible stat, which you may know, the '50 Sox, had a team BA of .302 (I had read it was .312 somewhere ...) And the team today is near or at .297.

rutledge has 137 games at SS, 104 at 2b, 16 at 3b, and 0 MLB games at any outfield position.

i think i am done with trying an "infielder" in LF for awhile.

For some reason all CAPS bother me, but all bold does not. I wonder if there is a way to set defaults on here regarding font, font size, bold, color etc? I'm guessing no, although I haven't investigated that thoroughly enough. I'm a fan of subtle font variety but not interested if i have to change it for every post.

You're right, it's hard to demote anybody. Another option is move him back to 9th. He gets less at bats, but it should prevent IBBs.

Did you know that if you hold down ctrl and scroll the mouse wheel up, you can make the font of whatever you're looking at larger? I find that that's actually an easier way to upgrade the visibility of text than playing with the font. I have eyesight problems myself and I usually view this forum at about 125% magnification

You're probably right. You convinced me. I think Shaw likely gets over 85.

I don't disagree, but how much longer do we stick with Holt?

He's 1 for his last 21 with just 1 BB and 6 for his last 40 with a .200 OBP.

What's up with Castillo?

Holt is very streaky.

Castillo has been rolling in Pawtucket. He'll be the next guy called up imo.

I wanted Castillo playing to begin with so I am all for that.

Me too. Holt has flamed out.

Young has improved after a horrible start, but Castillo should get the nod any minute now.

Last week, I heard that they were considering adding a position player, but a righty/righty platoon with Castillo and Young wouldn't make sense, and Castillo is not going to get any of Bradley's ABs.

That's a bit premature. He's in a slump. Slumps happen. Whether that slump turns into a death spiral or not remains to be seen, I think he should still be good for a couple good spurts of hitting before we really really need to replace him.

Why does it have to be a conventional platoon? young is there to rest the regulars. If you can get him into games against LHP so much the better, but he really is just there to be a warm body to put in the field when a guy needs a blow. There's no reason at all for this to be about maximizing Young's value, none at all. He's there to maximize the value of the othre 3 outfielders.

That is one way to look at it. Young is not going to have much success if he plays against RHP.

I don't really care how much success Young has. He's not here to carry the team. He's just here to be a warm body that plays sometimes.

Personally I'd love to move him for a more defensively inclined CF/LF type who was a bit more of an unambiguous straight-up backup. Wouldn't mind having Coco in that role.

I just don't think Young is very suitable to the teams needs. I agree that Coco would be a better fit.

Following along with the several of you that are talking Rusney. I like Holt and appreciate what he's done but think he needs a step back. It's time to let Castillo to have another run. It worked for JBJ .... (not everyone takes advantage of that next opportunity)

Coco's not hitting what Holt is, even in his slump. Coco was always a step away from being very good and a half step away from being on the DL. I don't see getting him ... not wanting him.

Crisp can't even play half the time. At least Young is healthy.

That's a silly statement. Crisp doesn't need to play 'half the time' to be a good backup. You're just suggesting that he's at the point of his career where ideally he should transition into exactly the role that I want him for.

A switch hitter off the bench with a little speed and good defensive chops, who can't play every day (and therefore can't demand to play everyday) but could probably cover a 2 week stretch if he had to -- that would be nearly ideal.
