Not wishful thinking, I just haven't seen many guys with a 6.00 ERA being hailed as the "stopper".

If you think Price is not a bona fide stopper, you must either be jealous or engaging in wishful thinking or ....

Cris Young has now risen to a .731 OPS in 52 PAs. That puts the Sox in a class all by itself over this short sample size of 35 games.

All Sox 10 players with 50 or more PAs have an OPS above .680. 9 players are above 723 and six are over .833!

The Cards have 11 guys with 50+ PAs, but K Wong is at .560, Gyorko is at .685 and Grichuk is at .693.They do have 8 guys above .799.

The Cubs have all the glitz by having 3 guys over 1.000 and 6 over .810, but out of their 11 guys with 50+ PAs, they have Soler at .536, Heyward at .580, Montero at .649, ROSS at .690, so it appears our offense is more balanced..

That is why we sent Kimmi over here. JUST KIDDING!

I know it makes it more interesting to watch and back when I did play the game, it rattled the lesser ballers when the Lord Mercury was able to steal on us.

I do agree with S5, it's smarts, too. They are all using a gene that my memory says the old Sox rarely used. Smart, involved, understanding what was going with the pitcher's motion, speed, etc. .... I'm resisting repeating myself or like minded ones ...

It's fun ... no matter who is right

LOL Yaz. Good one.

Speed is a great weapon, both offensively and defensively. I agree with S5's point about smart baserunning. Speed is nice, but being smart on the basepaths is just as important. Vazquez and Mookie (I believe) both took 2nd base on a pitch they saw was going to be in the dirt.

There are 20 teams with an OPS over a hundred points lower than the Sox. 8 teams are 150 points or more behind the Sox.

21 teams are 50 or more runs scored behind the Sox. 11 teams are 70 or more runs behind. 35 games: 70 runs- do the math!

Even when the Sox offense regresses, and it will, they will still be one of the top offenses in the AL. Baltimore is close, and that's it.

Every time I glance at this title, my mind fills in "Red Sox Offense - thrilling as f***."

Hey Jack, you're allowed to type that word here. ;)

On the topic of baserunning, the Sox are currently 8th in MLB in baserunning runs at 2.7 runs. For comparison, the Cubs are 1st with 9.3 runs and the Padres are 2nd with 7.3 runs.

Interestingly enough, take away the stolen bases, and the Sox rank 20th in baserunning with -1.2 runs.

According to fangraphs, the Sox are

1st in OPS and runs scored

5th in RP'er WAR

7th in UZR/150

8th in Base Running

14th in SP'er WAR (16th in ERA-)

He's just Babe being Babe, 700 ... I think he'll behave better here than at BDC, but he will find a point and run with it. :o)

:) I knew you wouldn't be offended. You were a positive voice in our previous experience and I appreciated that. Whiny Red Sox fans always got on my nerves, as you might remember.

I appreciate the variety of information I've gained with the different perspectives. When S5 adds the side of smart, that fills in the point I was hoping to make. Heh, we have seen stupid baserunning before ... or on the lighter side, "learning" baserunning (i.e. some of the 3rd base attempts last year.). Now, whenever Mookie, Xander, even Shaw are on first and someone singles deep, they are heading around third and scoring. There have been a couple of dumb plays I recall this season, not picking on Hanley but twice he was thrown out by a car parking spot ... uncomfortable. But HanRam has been another HOT batter as well, so he's well on his way to a great rebound.

Young has made a case for himself, Moon. What a recovery! DD can show his face, eh?

I look at the line up every night (or day) and stand amazed. Never a weak moment. I walked away from the tablet when Clay gave up 4 runs early in the game last week. Admittedly, I had a ton of work to do, but I didn't look back for the Sox to climb the hill again. Silly me. When I came back the score was all tied! I was busy, but I stopped for 10 minutes to watch the offense go off again! Absolutely love it.

I know these stats must be so much more pleasant than what you've been so diligent posting the last two seasons!

My little kid's mind imagines what this line up's Strat-o-matic cards would be .... :)

It's like day and night between last year and this year. Last year when the team got behind 2-3 runs, I was never confident that they could come back, and they rarely did. This year I expect them to come back and am very disappointed when they don't.

Did it again today, Kimmi! After Josh's throwing error opened the door for the 'Stros to come all the way back, it seemed like the magic had to end ... again, since they let one slip away the other day. But the Sox weren't ready to give up ... they almost made it up in the bottom half. They never really stop ... 10 more runs! 14 more hits! A rare day of defensive mistakes but they overcame it!

Yes they did Yaz, and it seems like everyone is contributing. Different guys are coming through with the big hits.

I saw an interesting tweet earlier. Boston's team BA is .297 (which is incredible) and Atlanta's team slugging is .297 (which is also incredible).

What a difference a year makes. Last year, the Sox averaged 2.5 runs per game in May. This year, they are averaging 7.4 runs per game in May after today's game. Before today's game, the Sox were batting .370 with a 1.072 OPS over the last seven games and were batting .325 with a .941 OPS in May.

More amazing stats. Going into today's game, as a team:

-- Batting .287 with .500 slugging and .861 OPS with 2 outs, RISP.

-- Batting .382 with .513 slugging and .895 OPS with RISP.

-- Batting .314 with .567 slugging and .948 OPS with runners on base.

-- Batting .364 with .618 slugging and 1.044 OPS in the first inning with 42 runs scored. (Second place for most runs scored in an inning is third inning with 31).

-- Batting .294 with .829 OPS and 60 runs scored with 0 outs; .303 with .859 OPS and 83 runs scored with one out; and .292 with .845 OPS and 76 runs scored with two outs.

Ben supposedly had always liked Rutledge.

What's going to happen if he keeps an OPS over 1.000?

Holt looks to be hitting the wall early this year.

Do we now have to start giving Josh some reps in LF?

(I'd have traded Holt while his stock was high.)

Benintendi promoted to Portland.

Just sayin... here we go. I'm skeptical he can make the rapid adjustments to get all the way to the big leagues from Salem this year, but this is one of the steps he has to complete to get there.

Rutledge is a horrible fielder, I wouldn't want him in the outfield. I like him as a bench guy, he hustles, can hit well and is a good base runner, but definitely don't want him starting every day with his glove.

I'd have Moncada playing 3B and LF at Salem for a few weeks, then I'd bring him up to Portland.

By year's end, we may see Pawtucket looking like this:

C- Swihart, Leon

1B- Travis

2B-Hernandez (Moncada)

SS- Marrero

3B- Moncada (Witte)

LF- Brentz (Moncada)

CF- Benintendi

RF- Castillo

DH- Witte

Nice, huh?

Holt's not all that great on D either, but he's better than Josh.

It's nice to know that we aren't the Bravos, eh? I'd say it's prayer meeting time for them, while our prayers are being answered with lotsa yesses. (Before anyone goes off on that, no I don't think God is all that interested in sports. I do, however think He is more than accepting of those who truly consider their talents as gifts ... well, another place and another time.)

Remember when Atlanta was a launching pad? I remember Hammerin' Hank and so many that used to play there... again, another place and time.

This is now and boy howdy is it fun!

Roy!

Both of your posts bring a Cheshire smile to my face. I smile in the dark and it looks like that huge grin lighting up the rrom!

Let's just kick up our heels and dance, my man! Well, I'll have to wait another 6 weeks or so! If by the time the doc says my fibula is whole and we ARE STILL hammerin' horse hide, I might just be dancing a jig or two!!
