The only have 24 men on the roster as of today?

True, but it doesn't matter since they don't play until Friday, at which time they will recall ERod since he is the scheduled starter on that day.

Ah, that makes sense. I couldn't figure out who was missing.

I remember the hype when Roger was in the minors. When he finally got the call, fans went crazy. One of the biggest call ups in my time..

I agree with your point of view here. To date, we have heard not even a whisper about moving Benintendi. All fan conjecture. I don't think that these two prospects need to be treated the same necessarily but I do think that sooner as opposed to later they do have to start thinking about what they will do with Moncada going forward. Easy for Benintendi- no thought required. Moncada is a different story but he may be on a different level than Benintendi. When you see them in Portland, I will be interested to hear about your first impressions. I have already expressed mine and they are pretty clear.

I'm bumming out. I can't go to the game Thursday night, and we're heading to Destin, FLA Friday morning.

That is too bad. I think that a lot of people would be saying a great deal more about Moncada if they actually had a chance to see him. Even just once! I've been involved in athletics forever and he is the real deal.

I've never seen Moncada play yet personally. Last summer I witnessed Benintendi go 2-4 (2nd Pro game vs Tri-City) first Pro HR (2-run shot) & first Pro SB. From what video I've seen and from what I've read of Moncada, he's some kind of man-beast and his physical stature makes everyone else seem unimpressive, w/ talent galore. Though Benny is by all accounts definitely the more polished player at this point. There are reasons why Benny got promoted to AA a month before Moncada did. Just sayin'.

Can you imagine a MLB lineup of Betts (RF), Bogaerts (SS), Bradley (CF), Benintendi (LF), and Moncada (we'll say 3B), plus whoever (2) out of Vazquez/Swihart/Leon at catcher. Filled in by veterans like Pedroia, Hanley, Hill ... for 2017? Does anyone share in my excitement of this possibility?

Yes, I do. This team will have the best offense in the American league for the next 4 years at least.

I would advocate bringing Benentendi up right after the all-star break and Moncada in September. If Benentendi does as well as he projects then DD has to look at our fill-in outfielders as trade material. Also one of our catchers and probably some of our not so great young pitchers. I like your 2017 lineup concept except I think Hanley will wind up at designated hitter and Shaw at FB. Hill would be a utility player in my view.

I don't get people's need to rush Benintendi to the Majors. Let the kid play and the FO decide when he's ready.

Amen.

People are just fascinated by the shiny new toy. If he were called up now, what are the chances that his performance exceed that of Brentz / Holt immediately?

True, but DD said he's "very close" and he doesn't thinks "skipping AAA" is a big deal, so I do not think the calling up Benintendi talk is out of line.

I agree though, when Sox manangement thinks he's ready, that's when he SHOULD be called up. Sometimes "need" plays a part in the decision, and I think that's what the debate is really centered on. How much should need play a role in the final decision?

Some here seem to think zero, some are more towards the other end of the spectrum, but ultimately, it's DD's choice, and we don't really know what advice he's being given, if there's disagreement among his group, or how much "need" will be a factor, if any.

My contention is that there really isn't the need to call him up now, so why take the risk?

I'm super excited, but I'm in no great hurry to see it happen. It's great they both should be ready by the time Papi retires.

I have advocated a "sooner rather than later" approach to finding a new position for Moncada, but I trust Sox management to know when the time is right.

I'm super excited about next year's possibilities:

1) Benintendi LF

2) Bogaerts SS

3) Betts RF

4) Bradley CF

5) Pedroia 2B

6) Moncada 3B/DH

7) Ramirez 1B/DH

8) Shaw 3B/DH or Travis 1B

9) Vazquez/Swihart/Leon/Hanigan C

Bench: Young, Holt, Hernandez & a catcher from above.

I'm very much worried about our pitching staff:

SP1) Price

SP2) ________

SP3) Porcello

SP4) Wright

SP5) ERod/ Kelly/ Elias/ O'Sullivan/ Owens/ Johnson or FA

Closer) Kimbrel

RP2) Ziegler

RP3) C Smith

RP4) _______

RP5) Barnes

RP6) Hembree

RP7) Ross/ Layne/ FA/ SP'er/ Workman/ N Ramirez/ Light/ Martin

Because I don't see Brentz as the LF answer.

I'm not sure when Young or Holt are due back, so if they are just days away, then I agree, there's no urgent need. Young was doing a very good job before he got hurt.

We'll cross that bridge when Brentz stops hitting. Right now, he's not an issue.

IMO, Brentz is a horrible fielder, and his hitting is a flash. I'd rather have Benintendi than Brentz, but if he's not ready, we're stuck with Brentz. I get that.

I'm hoping Young gets back soon.

Coppolella says flatly that the Braves aren’t trading Julio Teheran, who, of course, has been the subject of months of rumors and discussion. As we’ve noted elsewhere in these pages, Teheran is controllable through 2020, so the Braves could conceivably hang onto him as a veteran anchor for their rotation, even though his fine season and the relatively limited number of good starting pitchers available would also make him a strong trade chip this summer.

I guess Teheran is off the market?

I don't get the feeling he's Ace material. I don't think Pomeranz is either, but may cost less prospects to get than Teheran. Does anyone here really like Teheran? IMHO, I'm nervous we'd have to give up way too much for him and many say he's a #3 tops that's pitching over his head right now.

Smart moves. I didnt realize that 3 out of the four traded were rule 5 eligible this winter. The other names on that list could bring back a Hill or hellickson type I would think. Both are FA rentals with mid/back of rotation profiles. Or in Hills case he has injury, innings, and age issues as well.

I dont see a blockbuster unless Its a name, like Merloni has been saying, that we all go "Huh?" Then turns out to be pretty special...DD is known for those moves. Ben shouldve stayed on so he could learn something. Im very interested to see how DD handles things at the break and this winter. If he doesnt get that big starter at the break hes going for it this winter.

I didn't realize that either. Stanky is after next season. Time flies i guess.

You bring up a good point, I think if Ben stayed on he would've no doubt learned a lot from DD. I also think DD has realized to a certain extent the philosophy Ben was on, the talent he was sitting on at the lower levels, and why that train of thought is now paying huge dividends. I give a lot of respect to DD for coming in and not firing everyone on the spot and bringing in all new people who have no idea where the organization was at. I think he gets it, for the most part.

I don't see Brentz as a long term answer in LF, but for the time being, he is holding his own. I prefer Holt as a super utility guy, but with the addition of Hill, having Holt play LF regularly is less of an issue.

Again, things could change quickly, but right now, there's no urgent need.

I am a huge fan of the Theo and Ben philosophy of building an organization. IMO, it is spot on. Dombrowski has done a good job to this point. I am still somewhat concerned about what extent he might go to with a 'win now' attitude, but that remains to be seen. So far, so good.
