They're also looking for record contracts. If we cld find away to dump a little of ours away, gain a LFer who could always DH. I love Bautista & Encarnacion but Encarnacion is strickly a DH isn't he? I like the maneuverability w/ Braun at half the price (if we could dump Castillo that is).
Encarnacion has played third base for much of his career. His number of games at Third base are almost equivalent to his combined games at 1B and DH. I am not advocating him for 3B, but he does have some versatility.

An OF bat would still help us more this season me thinks and I don't foresee an in-division trade happening between Tor-Bos for Bautista.

There has been some talk that Joe Batts bautista and Encarnacion would be good DH fits for the Red Sox. Both are free agents after this season.

Some of the people from the old board have heard this already, so forgive me.

I was at a Red Sox function in Maine over the winter where Stiggy was present in a question and answer format. He said that night that "If you're at a game against Toronto this summer and you see Bautista be good to him because he may be the Sox DH in 2017". And that was Stiggy's take on it, who may have a good feel for things.

I sometimes wonder how different the AL East would be if Yankee fans didn't spit on Cliff Lee's wife in 2010.

I would obviously welcome a big bat in the lineup, but I personally would advocate against giving top dollar to a 34 or 36 year old free agent when pitching will be more of a long term need. Also, I think this team has a great young core that is making up this offense and I like to see money spent on extending one or two of them if we could.

That's one of those situations where Yankee fans got what they deserve.

Ya know, I like NYC to visit and I don't even dislike the Yankee players all that much (with certain notable exceptions), but they have to have the most obnoxious fans on this side of "the pond". Some of those British soccer fans can be pretty brutal too!

My thinking goes along that same line. The Sox have a solid core of young players signed for a relatively long time. That's why I don't do much hand-wringing when DD trades prospects. If I were the GM I'd identify one or two prospects whom I'd deem untouchable and all the rest would be available in the right trade. I'd also be trying to sign those three 'up the middle' players + Mookie to long term deals ASAP.

Hard to say - the Phillies did end up paying him more AAV

Who is Stiggy?

trout will pobably leave when his contract's up, but I don't think it's at all reasonable to expect the Angels to trade him in 2016. They're gonna try to build a team around him and win in the next 5 years, and from the Angels' perspective, 5 years to win is a pretty reasonable window. Plenty of room to hope that can happen and plenty of reason to expect that if you're close in year 5 but don't quite get there you can back up the truck and keep hold of Trout.

Name of thread = speculative trades. I am speculating that the Angels suck so badly that they will listen to offers from teams having the right package of prospects. I'm not suggesting that it is something I would like to see us do but I could certainly live with it for a generational type talent aged 24. I don't really see any moves that we have to make right now for sure. I'm saying and I am not alone in saying it that if Trout should become available, watch out because it is the type of move that Dombrowski would make regardless of how you or I feel about it.

There are some big differences though. Betts started 2014 in AA, not A. Betts was called up to a last place team. Betts also benefited greatly by the total ineptitude of Sox outfielders that year: JBJ imploded, Victorino was hurt most of the year, Gomes was traded and really didn't do much before he was, Nava was terrible the first half. There is not a comparable situation in Boston this season.

No need to rush the kid. Yes, if he keeps raking at Salem he'll be in Portland before the end of the year, but that will probably be it. He appears to be a keeper, but let's not ascribe Trout/Harper fly through the levels type talent to him.

He could was my point, not that he would. Its possible.

I would never compare him to trout or harper. He is his own person. The fact that he could have a sept call up is a reality. Thats all i was saying.

It's possible, but IIRC the Red Sox organization as a whole has been reluctant to have 40 players in the dugout in September. It's more likely that he'll get an invitation to Spring Training next year, something not all 2nd year players get.

I understand that, but to further the clarification saying a guy is about average....isn't exactly the greatest argument in his favor. This isn't a knock against Holt, nor is it a cry to replace him in LF, I'm merely stating that it should be an option.

This is a thread about roster moves and trade speculation no??? what does this team need? an improvement against LHP. We are currently 26th in BA against LHP, 24th in OBP and 25th in SLG% I was merely suggesting an upgrade in LF against LHP. Shaw can't hit LHP....now I'm not saying to take him out of the lineup now against LHP but if he still has horrible splits come July I'd consider plugging Holt at 3B vs. LHP. In that scenario I'm looking for a bat to put in left. I'm not necessarily even talking about Holt not being a starter. But depending on what's out there or if Castillo takes a step forward I would consider it. In that situation we would be better....what's wrong with making the team better???

Seriously? Have you been watching Shaw bat? Hes a MLB career .281 with a OPS approaching .850. Shaw doesnt need to be spelled for any LHP. His splits are about identical.

I know hes off to a rough start this year, but to say he cant hit LHP is just just wrong.

He has been the second most impactful bat in our lineup. You don't sit a guy like that because a SSS of stats say that he can't hit LHPs named Bill.

The way things are going i would agree with you...but weve all seen things happen, and happen quickly. A couple injuries or a prolonged slump and Benni tearing up AA...not highly likely, but possible. Which was my whole point.

Agree. Just because he had some issues with LHP a couple years ago certainly doesnt mean he cant mature as a hitter and as a ballplayer. I really dont pay too much attention to ML stats once a guys been in the show for a year or two. Shaw has a solid approach at the plate. One that make you think he could, and would improve.

because he didnt do great vs LHP in The ML as a 23yo it means he wont improve? Yeah, Im not buying that..the old eye test says much different. Hes a .281 hitter vs LHP in MLB

essentially they are shutting down minor league pitchers - so only guys coming up in roster expansion are position guys (and ours are not that bad)

If a trade is made, I'm guessing that it will be a blockbuster for young already somewhat proven potentially great players. We are in a great position right now. Lots of young talent. I don't know whether they identify a specific pitcher or player in general going forward or not. Lots of options. At the beginning of spring training I would have bet on Encarnarcion being in Boston and dhing for us next year. Now, I don't know. Where do we need help right now - pitching and possibly left field. It just looks as though that we have an abundance of potentially pretty good prospects on the way. We may get some incredible offers. I don't think that we are going to get screwed.

Ryan Braun is reportedly being shopped heavily by Milwaukee. I know he has the steroid past, but I think he would be a great to be our LF. He is still one of the best hitters in the league

One problem with trying to find trade partners these days is parity.

As of now there are only a handful of teams that have virtually no chance at even making the playoffs:

ATL -16.5 from wildcard

OAK -14.5

Cincy -10.0

SDP -9.0

Maybe by the deadline these teams may be toast:

OAK -7.5

AZ -7.5

PHIL -5.0

MIL -4.5

COL -4.5

Even if all these teams are sellers come trade deadline time, I don't see much of anything we could realistically trade for on these teams without drastically overpaying

I'm not taking the position that Shaw ought to sit. He's earned a chance to fight through his .551 OPS over the last 28 days stretch.

I will say that his sample size of doing very well in MLB looks pretty big, but it is not large enough to know for sure that the stretch from last year to 28 days ago was the real Shaw. Anytime I see a player having a stretch much higher than his most recent 2-3 years in the minors, some sort of doubt lingers.

Here's Shaw's splits in the minors:

...................vs RHP/Vs LHP

2015 AAA .703/.610

2014 AAA .850/.508

2014 AA 1.093/.782

2013 AA .719/.775

2012 AA .847/.659

There is a pattern of struggling vs LHPs, so it's not absurd to think that pitchers might have figured something out about Shaw, and if he can't make significant adjustments, he may end up as a platoon player over time.

I'm not projecting or expecting it to happen, but I am mindful to the possibility.

Pablo, Castillo, Owens & Johnson for Braun.

Pablo, Castillo, Owens & Johnson for Braun.

Why would the Brewers take on $25 million more in obligations to trade a productive player for four disappointments?

Under the fWAR conversion, Ryan Braun has been valued at $30.6 million since the start of the 2015 season. Over the same period, Pablo Sandoval has been valued at a negative $17.4 million, Rusney Castillo $4.9 million, Henry Owens $2.8 million and Brian Johnson $100,000. Braun barely earns more than Sandoval over the next three seasons.

Milwaukee should not be a dumping ground.

I assume you were joking.

Having read a few recent media reports that the Padres may be shopping Wil Myers has me intrigued. This may sound silly, but when he came up with the Rays in 2013 and I saw him play against the Sox, he just looked like a star in the making. I particularly liked the fluidity of his swing. I thought the Rays had found another Evan Longoria. Admittedly, in his brief career he has not lived up to my expectations nor for that matter many others expectations.

However, with all that being said, I'm still wondering how he might do in a Sox uniform.

Does anyone have access to his stats when he played for the visiting Rays at Fenway?

And while at it, I'd enjoy knowing what the keen baseball minds on the forum think about how he might do as a Sox and where he would fit in?

I like Myers for my fantasy team, but in reality, he's a guy with a lengthy medical history. I'd only take him if the price was right.
