Good God! I thought the O's announcers were bad during the regular season. This is excruciating. Jim Palmer is such a tool.

Even my Os fans friends can't stand him. He loves the sound of his own voice. He knows his pitching but he is humorless, repetitive and talks down to his audience. Gary Thorn is okay but working with Palmer must get to you.

Elk, certainly Palmer should work on his personality and maybe get a sense of humor but he does know pitching. I often wondered why he never went into coaching. Good pitching coaches are worth their weight in gold. Speaking of pitching, what to make of ours so far? I don't think unless you're at the ballpark can you really come to any conclusions about how we look so early in ST. I mean, does the pitchers have stamina, are the pitches moving, are they consistently around the plate, are t hey working on certain pitches? What I do like is that Bobby has the team running---a far cry from yesteryear, but I think it will take another couple of weeks before we really can make heads or tails of our pitching staff.

700 (Ted) is heading for Fort Myers next week so maybe he or someone else who'se been down there can fill us in by what they see with their own eyes.

Imagine that?

I have MLB Extra Innings but all of the O's games are blacked out (although I live 2 1/2 or so hours from Baltimore). So unless I go to a sports bar, I have to watch the MASN broadcast. At least I get to see the game, but listening to them is horrible. :thumbdown

Cook looked good today. Considering his medical history' date=' I am not getting my hopes up yet. But maybe we shouldn't cross him off the list yet.[/quote']

I thought the same thing about Cook.

In Palmer's case as with any other human, his looks are out the door due to his poor personality.

How in the world do I know what you look like? Did you ever post a picture out here?

Oh and btw, I'm not threatened by any men. :D A lot of my favorite people are men. :)

Looks and charms are not a threat to me.

I just saw the highlights of Aaron cook. It looked like he was forcing batters to pound the ball into the ground, which is obviously a great sign. Wouldn't it be awesome if he could regain his force from a few years ago? That would make our rotation quite good.

I think Valentine's insistence on stressing fundamentals this spring has already looked to have paid dividends. Two great relays in the ninth inning kept the game from going South. Lavarnway made a great tag on one but came up boxcars when the second throw got away from him. So far, I really like what I am seeing. We look sharper in the field, we are running, bunting, moving the runners, all things that we didn't do in the recent past. My impression is that BV is going to throw the whole kitchen sink at the opposition this season---and thank goodness for that. Let's face it, we had become very predictable under the old regime. Now if only our pitching can get it all together we may be very pleasantly surprised this season. On that note, I hate to say it because he has looked so good, but I still think Aceves is needed in the bullpen. We need to be deep down there just in case someone comes up ineffective or lame. Bard must step up at No. 4 and Doubrant must finally live up to his promise, and if not him then Padilla or Cook.

Today's game was a great example of that. It was fun watching Papi go !st to third. As BV said he is stressing that they think 180/270 on the bases. One of the funniest things happened IMO wasn't Ozzie getting thrown out (of a ST game ) but when Ross missed a sign to steal. BV particularly whistled at him and then when he got his attention hand gestures for him to go on the next pitch which he did.

It was great fun to watch. One of the most enjoyable exhibition games. I've seen.

This is the way to end the day on this board---feeling good about the team, that we are seeing things coming together, and that we will do all we can to take the game to the oppositon instead of sitting back and waiting for the three run homer. Certainly there is a time when you must use the station-to-station technique but it should not be worn as a straight jacket. I like the way Ortiz motored around the bases in the fourth inning; we didn't see that last year, did we? Of course, our pitching has to step up and we must stay healthy but our team looks like it may be on a mission. I'm liking what I see so far.

I'm definitely liking Bobby V style of aggressive base running. Thanks for making it a known fact: Ortiz is faster than Gonzo.

I have always enjoyed watching Ortiz run the bases. He is not exactly a gazelle but he runs with purpose and always seems to pop-up with a self deprecating smile after a slide.

I too am encouraged that the Sox appear to be more aggressive on the base paths. I can't remember when a Sox team last took this approach. I was (and still am) a huge Francona fan. But that does not mean that I can not appreciate BV's "new" approach.

This is just fun to see.

Agree 110%. Francona had his way of managing, Bobby V has his. I think this new style will be very cohesive with the likes of Ellsbury, Crawford, Pedroia, Sweeney, and eventually Iglesias.

Just thinking about how frustrating it was to watch everytime one of the Rays or Angels got on base, they would always take an extra bag, force the outfielders and catchers to make a strong and accurate throw. Force them into making errors.

I've always loved that style of play and have really wished the Sox would be aggressive like that more often rather than waiting for the 3 run homer. Having that style of play along with the hitters to hit the 3 run homeruns makes this a very dangerous team because now it's not just a power threat team, now the defense has to always be on their toes, whether it's a straight steal, going 1st to 3rd on a base hit on the right side, a delayed steal, etc. This team can manufacture runs or score them in bunches. Not so power-dependent.

Very good sequence to Martin for Doubront. Dropped a curve in for a called strike, made him go around with a weak check swing on another curve out of the bottom of the zone, then froze him with a painted fastball.

He's throwing too many pitches. Won't go long in games with 70+ through 4.

Yes he is. Hopefully he is trying different stuff to see what works. His line is good. Time will tell.

You have to take into consideration that it's a very disciplined lineup.

Also as a fifth starter, if he's giving you 6 per start, you're receiving a blessing from the baseball Gods.

It was an excellent job by Doubront all things considered. As Pinella so accurately said he did nothing wrong. He did a very good job his last inning against the heart of the Yankees lineup. I don't think RS management will be too upset with his performance.

Doubront was very shaky in the first inning. He threw a lot of pitches and walked 2 batters. After that, he settled in and looked very good. Hopefully, he can build on this and be the Red Sox version of 2011 Nova.
