The first game I ever saw at Fenway was in 1974 and Marichal was the starting pitcher.

Haha! I don't suppose you remember if Beniquez was in center. :D

They were playing the Brewers and Marichal got knocked out after only getting one out. The Sox were down 4-0 but came back to win 8-6. Dick Pole got the win in 7 strong innings of relief. Beniquez was playing center but didn't make any catches while Marichal was in. Dwight Evans and Bernie Carbo had 2 RBI each.

A little of that I remember, the rest is courtesy of Baseball-Reference.

Doubront did not do well at all. So far Aceves has looked the best for the last slot, but it is very early. Silva is out of the picture with a bad shoulder. Cook and Ohlendorf have bad shoulders, but say they feel fine. I have to think that the competition is among Aceves, Padilla and Doubront. A couple of more outings like yesterday and Doubront will eliminate himself from consideration.

If Doubront is eliminated from SP consideration he will be the long relief guy, no? That would be okay too. As you said, it is still early.

If you have been going to any of the games, who has looked good to you?

Doubront will make the staff one way or another, because he is out of options. Even if he doesn't make the rotation out of camp, he will get the ball for starts if/when Padilla flames out. Aceves is still my pick to lock down the 5th spot.

I will be leaving for Fort Myers a week from tomorrow. I will report back while I am there.

Padilla looked bad today. Except for Aceves' date=' the candidates for the #5 spot have not looked good at all.[/quote']

Miller looked good

Joking. Although I think he has a shot at winning the slot because Bobby V is just arrogant enough to think he can fix him (and kudos to him if he does).

I still think Doubront wins the battle. If we're going to go with a question mark at the end of the rotation, all things equal, why not go with a solid young LHP who you can develop into an average-to-above-average SP?

Enjoy this friends. The Bard-Aceves combo will win the Red Sox many games this year.

They should just combine to be the 4th starter, like Voltron. Bard 1-5, Aceves 6-9.

What? A-gon's catch or Punto's boot?

Considering it was posted at 759, must've beenthe Iglesias steal of home. The other plays happened after 8.

Well that, and Aceves will pitch the 7th and 8th innings for all the other pitchers too

Bard has sink on everything he throws. Aceves got more fly balls in his first inning than Bard in 3.

Aceves looked better than Bard. Bard is throwing 96, but he was getting behind in the 2nd and didn't get to throw his slider much. Aceves had better location. I'd like to see him starting a game--not in relief.

These two guys should have the inside track as 4th and 5th starters.

Iglesias continues to impress. Hits a rope to right center that lackadaisical Upton let bounce off his glove. Shows up as a 3 base error, but it was a solid hit scoring 2 runs. Tried to steal home on the next pitch.

Bobby has these guys on their toes on the bases. They are running.

You look at plodding Youks at 3b, and you figure they need a SS who can cover some ground. The pitchers must be praying for Iglesias.

Lars Anderson continues to look like a hitter. What's up with this guy.

Good dugout interview with Salty. Nice kid. I like a kid with determination.

MLB channel has had the Red Sox game two nights in a row. Nice treat to see the new park.

Lucchino was on between innings. Didn't say much, as I recall.

Amazing they have a kid Lin playing CF. Wonder if he can play basketball.

au contraire' date=' Ned Martin or to those of us who grew up in the fifties it was the "Cowboy at the Mike" Curt Gowdy.[/quote']

I think Gowdy was the dean of Red Sox announcers. He later became famous as the network TV announcer of the AFL games when the league started in 1960. Gowdy's sidekick was first Jim Britt, who went to the Boston Braves, and then Bob Murphy? or Ned Martin? Can't remember who came first. Murphy became the voice of the Mets. I think Murphy came first.

Ken Coleman came from Cleveland, and was a great announcer for the Sox. He and Gowdy were the best, I think. Ned Martin was good, too. Murphy was more known as the Mets voice, but he started with the Sox as Gowdy's sidekick. I think that's right, though I haven't looked it up to check my memory.

Why not go with a solid young LHP? Why not, except will he ever develop into an average-to-above average starting pitcher? I've been hearing about this guy for the past three years as a sure fire starting pitcher for us but it hasn't transpired on the mound. He would be the ideal No. 5 man but he has to start showing up in games and demonstrate that he is ready to take over that job. He's one guy I'm keeping my eye on this Spring.

Good God! I thought the O's announcers were bad during the regular season. This is excruciating. Jim Palmer is such a tool.
