Red Sox Demote Anthony Seigler, Mickey Gasper as Roman Anthony, Trevor Story Return

WIth the return of left fielder Roman Anthony and shortstop Trevor Story made official Sunday, the Boston Red Sox optioned catcher-first baseman Mickey Gasper and infielder Anthony Seigler to Triple-A Worcester to make room on the 26-man roster.

Anthony and Story were activated from the 60-day injured list and the Red Sox had two open spots on their 40-man roster to accommodate their return. Also, left-handed reliever Raymond Burgos was sent back to Worcester after serving as the extra player in Saturday's doubleheader. Anthony is back after partially tearing a ligament in his right wrist and hand, while Story had surgery to repair a sports hernia. Both have been out since May.

Anthony was back in his customary leadoff spot and serving as the designated hitter for Sunday's series finale vs. the Yankees, while Story was at shortstop and batting eighth as the Red Sox look for a split of the four-game set.

Gasper has been a solid bat while with the Red Sox this season, putting up a .278/.374/.466 slash line with five homers and 19 RBIs in 45 games. Seigler has been a nice utility player and has a .250/.331/.405 slash line with three homers and 13 RBIs in 48 games.

Give it a week to see if Story can play and especially hit.

Story's return now may be an effort by Brez to show respect to the veteran   but it will be potentially at the expense of winning.

Which include leading the team in HRs, RBIs and SBs.

He can't reach teh Mendoza line in AAA, but that means he can hit more than 5 dingers a week in the show?

There is that potential, but playing the guys that were playing might have been just as dangerous.

.628 Seigler in last 20 games, but over 1.000 in last 6 games before the demotion

The subs or replacements for IL players have performed very well in near FT roles.

But over the past 22 games in August the results are 11-11, proverbial .500 team.

There is not a chance that anyone will know.  I could've sworn I heard complaints about the RS being unable to score in the past few days.  This is like lighting a Roman Candle and trying to predict where it will land.

I think they had to make the choice they had to make.

Story is a slow starter who started slowly then got hurt. He was the team's HR, RBI & SB leader last year and is healthy, again. Monasterio was slumping. Seigler had been slumping but was starting to do well. Neither really deserved to keep a FT role. Sogard will keep playing.

Anthony at DH was a no-brainer.

Gasper was competing with Rutschman to be the catcher who hits RHP and he wasnt going to win that battle.  Wong is the catcher who hits LHP the best and his spot was pretty secure- Adley is a switch hitter but hits much better from the left side.   Then you have Anthony coming back and he is another lefty bat who hits RHP better than Gasper.  Nice to see Anthony and Story come back strong.  Im OK not playing my best in late August as long as we have the playoffs locked up.  This team is obviously streaky - let them get hot in late September.

I saw Anthony and Story (and IKF) live in their last innings at Worcester Saturday. Roman played LF and looked adequate, running down some routine fly balls. Story made the average plays at short. 

Both also struck out vs. Triple A pitching. But Story did double later, hitting a ball in front of his front foot to the fence in the leftcenter gap... a good sign. After his double Sunday in NY, maybe he's about to go on a hot streak.

I have no problem keeping Gasper around as a great lefty batter but holding 3 catchers is a luxury.  He is a bit of a specialist like Romy or Refsnyder  (from the other side) last year but can only really play a serviceable catcher in the field.

Im not sure if Wong  has reverse splits  or if he just sucked last year - Im not disagreeing with you.

He may know how to put the gear on, but he certainly isn't a catcher.

He looked pretty good at 1B last night.

Actually, professionally (majors and minors), he's played more games at 1B (222 total (210 minors, 12 majors)) than catcher (186 total (154 minors, 32 majors)).

IMHO, there is a world of difference between having a 3rd string catcher that doesn't catch or hit, and having a DH/1B that owns a catching glove.
