2) If the season is canceled, which I doubt, I'd be shocked if owners gave any service time to the players.

3) There is no monetary reason not to spend on Rutschman.  We'll have $154M in cap space.  That doesn't mean we'll like AR well enough to extend him, but money is certainly not an issue.

money is ALWAYS an issue JH these days--ALWAYS

I want to be over the moon with the Adley trade, but a part of me is worried that the other shoe will fall. JH won't up the money to keep him around (we've seen that play out before) and the prospects given up come back around to bite us. If I had faith that JH would always do the right thing, I wouldn't put much care towards "but what about the prospects" TBH.

The here, and now is why Rut Man is here at the moment. If he stays that will be decided later as will if he was worth the Immature Assets they traded for him.

Well, the here and now is he's injured and isn't playing.

I fully understand that, and if he isn’t resigned, and depending on what happens next year labor wise you might not even get a full one, and done out of him, and you gave up some high immature assets to get him.

There's no rush to re-sign him. Wait to see how he plays the remainder of this season, then all going well, extend him before the stoppage and grandfather in any costs in the event of a cap.

Dodgers will do the same with Skubal.

I'm not so sure extending Rut will be a good thing.

I agree with Hitch on no hurrying to do so, unless it's for 1-2 years or 3 at a discount rate.

Work stoppage is December 1. Not a lot of time to get a deal done if they have a decent playoff run.

If they don't extend him, then they better get to the WS either this year or next.

That was my main concern with this deal. The huge possibility of a long lockout next year makes him a ridiculously overpaid 3 month rental if the plan wasnt to resign him right away.
So then Anything short of winning a ring this year, this trade will be a huge failure. My guess is they must feel that they will re-sign him before the lockout.

Unless there’s a lockout all year, which has been talked about.

What’s the chances the Red Sox make it worth it to the Rut Man to not go to FA?

You can have the conversations from now. Start sounding out numbers. Then if it goes as they hope get it done straight after.

He's not making that much in his arb years. Sox could go 6/180 to buy off the last arb year. It's up to the Sox. Adley's agent has extended his clients before.

Maybe, but that's gotta be less than 10% likelihood IMO. Right now, there's just a lot of bluster from ownership. Losing baseball for a full year would irreparably harm the brand.

Idk. His injuries the past 2 years would worry me to go 6 years.

I wish I had your positivity. I firmly believe if you offered the owners no baseball for a year right now in exchange for the cap, they'd snatch your hand off.

The brand will always recover, It's baseball, it's not going anywhere, even if it would suffer a hit.

6/150 they proposed on Mass Live. That would be my top number. He's got too chequered an injury past to offer him 6/180.

If his injuries are that bad currently, aren't you worried about the here and now? 🤔

They took an attendance hit after the last work stoppage in '94. Attendance didn't fully recover for about a decade. If they missed an ENTIRE season rather than just the last third??? YUCK!

I really don't see them missing a full season. I think the Opening Day will be before the middle of May at the latest.

'94 was a different world. With everyone online now and access that brings for promotion and prodganda, I'm fairly confident it wouldn't hit that hard.

I hope you're right. I fear, I am.

Money is an issue; the individual salaries are not.  We're spending $275M this year, and if nothing changes, we will be spending $275M in two years.  And that will provide us with $157M to spend.  It is the $157M that counts.

Nothing has been talked about, that we know of.  Breslow says nothing to anyone, and he is a relative gossip columnist compared to Manfred.

It might be in Adley’s best interest to extend before the CBA expires…

The whole idea of extending him now would be to get a discount.  He lacks leverage right now.  He's injured.  He's playing well, but coming off of two weak-ish seasons.  If (and I seriously doubt they will) BB shuts down for a year, and they don't grant any service time, then he becomes a FA in 2029.  At age 31.

The RS still have to offer fair money, but I'd bet he'd be inclined to take the safe route.

I believe there are many other options for your entertainment now than back then. If you get out of the habit of going to games or watching on tv, you'll get into the habit of doing something else. It won't affect diehards, but most fans aren't diehards.

We gave up what for an injured guy coming off two weak seasons??? Damn. You guys weren't talking about him like this when they traded for him. You only talk about him like this when it comes to JH's money? 🤔
