Rays have a very easy AUG schedule (CHW, COL, SEA, ATH, BAL 2, TOR 2,  DET, SDP). I feel like they are going to get one more arm at the deadline and keep their pace going. Sox should be able to pass the Yanks, but I don't think they are catching the Rays. They just dug themselves too big of a hole. They certainly have a chance. FanGraphs has them at 5% for the division. I'd say it's closer to 15-20%.

All very sensible.  

To me this Sox team has a very unusual dynamic compared to other Red Sox teams in the John Henry era.  They have terrific pitching, ERA now ranked 3d in MLB, backed up with a defense that has caused just 27 unearned runs in 105 games despite a so-so middle infield.  That is simply not Sox baseball.  Funny thing, most Sox teams in the JH era have had at least one ace starter--like Crochet last season.  Not so this season

I think the pitching has Breslow written all over it.  Less so the defense because he inherited the outfield.  

The lack of hitting is only partly on Breslow because he inherited Story and Yoshida--$40M/ year with little production--and correctly let Devers and then Bregman go.  Contreras was a good addition, and this seson Rafaela and Abreu have both been pretty good. Durans OPS stinks except when men are in scoring position when it skyrockets to .913, which is why he has the second most rbi's on the team after Contreras.  Last year the Sox best hitter was Anthony, who has been on the IL since April with no return date in sight.  He's waiting for the pain to go away.  

I liked and still like Cora a ton, but there can be little doubt that replacing him with Tracy has helped a lot.

Yup, 10 day IL. But, at least he got 2 at-bats. I wouldn't be surprised at all that a month from now we'll be asking "where's Mead?"

Everybody is reporting it’s a broken wrist/wrist fracture. There has got to be a huge issue in the Boston medical department because “X-rays were negative”.

A month from now Connelly Early is going to throw a no-hitter in his Nationals debut while Mead will still have yet to record a hit in a Sox uniform.

If the Sox had picked up Roy Hobbs in a trade, within a day he would have gone on the IL with a bullet wound.

If the story is accurate and Mead is in a wrist cast for 6 weeks, his arm will wither and atrophy leaving him  out of action for the rest of the season and playoffs.  He will need 6-8 weeks to heal the bone and 3 weeks to reload the arm/wrist and then he will modify his swing to accomodate residual soreness and never get a basehit for Boston .

I am only hoping he doesn't get to meet Mr. Anthony and compare pain levels

Who else can the Sox pickup and immediately put on the IL? That used to be their strategy in signing pitchers

I notice that Aroldis is getting near his 40 inning trigger for the auto contract clause giving him  a $13 MM guarantee for 2027 .   Chapman is at 34.2 innings , so 6 more appearances should get it.  He also has some incentive bonuses ranging from $100K to $1 million depending on his voting position (5-1) in 2 different reliever of the Year  tallies.

Cot's is showing that the '27 deal is a mutual option with a $300K buyout , so, if true, Aroldis could teat the market potentially.

If the Sox had continued their pre June 25 losing pace, Aroldis would be a great trade candidate but given the current standings I doubt there is anyway Brez would move him , same for Sonny Gray.

There’s something called an occult fracture that doesn’t show up on initial x-rays but does show up in later tests (follow on x-rays or MRI).  The wrist is apparently one of the areas susceptible to them.

Lord knows the Sox medical staff has been less than good, but I could even see a case here where a Sacramento area specialist had to read it to find it. 

It really doesn’t matter; the injury is what it is and I doubt the treatment for the first 24 hours has adversely affected anything as far as recovery.

we should be offering him at least a 2 year extension but instead will likely scour the rehabbing pitchers list and see who else we can sign for a 2 yr deal even though they are guaranteed to not pitch the first year at all. Sound familiar ?-and no Sandavol is not alone in these signings. Why offer 2 years to a guy who has been lights out ON THE FIELD?

We've had a Meadless line-up most of the season. However, now we have an Earlyless pitching staff.

So in reality the Sox got nothing for Early. Similar to what they got for Sale.

MRIs are much more accurate than Xrays in detecting small fractures. The resolution is much higher. Mead is toast for the season.
