I thought we already had several #4-5 SP options.

I think we will be trading 1-2 SP'ers this winter- maybe even Oviedo.

Teams that can draft, scout, develop, and target pitchers well can take talented arms that haven't had success yet and turn them into really good players.

The Sox have not been that team for a long time, but they did better last year and we can see the improvements on the farm.  We know this is the ambition and the goal of one Craig Breslow who isn't just the POBO but also a former pitcher.

I'm going to let the man cook, and see what these kids can do before I go off and judge them and base my opinions on them from what their ERA was last year.

Guzman may turn out to be an underrated guy in this trade, or not.  But he certainly helps build up depth in the catching ranks for a system that has literally almost no catching depth.

Indeed.

The previous "administration" had some luck with guys like Pivetta, Schreiber, Bernardino and several others I can't think of, and Brez & Co did okay with Slaten, Criswell, Weissert, Booser and maybe we can count Gio, but the jury is still out.

To be fair, I think the jury is always out.  These guys should never stop being judged.

If we did, we'd still be giving John Henry a free pass for all he's done.

On NESN it said they project him as a bottom of the rotation starter. Another comment said they traded a #3 prospect for a bottom of the rotation starter, which didn’t compute to making much sense.🤔

Garcia isn't the #3 prospect. Tolle/Early/Arias/Perales/Witherspoon. Not sure he's top 5 even.

Full deal:

Garcia

Travieso (SP #19)

for

Oviedo

Samiengo (pitcher on the 40 man)

Guzman (defensive catcher with pull power)

To make room for both 40 man adds, Criswell was DFA'd.

I think we had room any way, but are now down to 39 for room for a Rule 5 move.

Draft and trade might be on again.

I'm just glad they keep adding catchers because that's one of the areas I was concerned about organizationally.

Hard agree. It was definitely a growing concern.

Every story I read about the trade said the Password was the #3 prospect including NESN, so they All must have been wrong?🤔

Not top 3 on SoxProspects, MLB Pipeline, Baseball America...

Garcia was the Red Sox 2025 Minor League Offensive Player of the Year.

What did he do to offend Breslow? Or do clubs give awards to prospects to hype their tradebait resumes?

We are at 40. We lost JG and DFA's Criswell and added two to the 40.

I think Campbell is now viewed as a LF'er, so Garcia was knocked down a peg.

I'm pretty sure the sites are behind and that we were at 39 before this move (and after). I may be wrong, but that's what I've just seen.

Because of talent or contract obligations? Hmmm... maybe someday they'll battle each other in Home Run Derby at the All-Star Game (the celebrity softball game in Hollywood).

He walks way too many batters.

Walks more than I like but his numbers from last season’s 40IP are useless.

If you’ve ever seen him - and you can’t miss him, hes f***ing huge - he has a really good slider and curve.  Fastball is weak.  His real problem, however, has been staying off the IL.

Not sure if he’s viewed as a starter, starter depth, or returns to the bullpen…

To me Oviedo looks like a bullpen arm. The last time he took the mound and pitched in a large volume as a SP was in 2023 when he pitched 177 innings and his overall pitching suffered for it. He had his lowest career ERA+ at 104 and his WHIP ballooned to 1.373.

In 2025 his numbers "improved" but he only had 9 starts and 40 IP. That's only 4.44 IP per start and is a poor sample size. I dunno if he continues to struggle with walks as a starter he might need to be moved back to the bullpen. Who knows, the guy is still only 25. If he can stay healthy and get better maybe he gives us an option as a 4-5 guy but he might be best limited to the pen.

My wife saw Fred Lynn play there once.

Gray was the 40th- taking Fitts' slot.

I think you may be right. To me, Crawford and or Oviedo is bound for the pen, barring SP'er injuries.
