There's a lot of $$$ coming off the books this offseason and could/should have done this deal even if Raffy was still on the team FWIW since the deal doesn't start until '26.

Well, there is still Devers money left over, and soon we'll have Buehler money, Chapman & Wilson money and maybe Gio's money, too.

If JH does not spend to the tax limit line, this winter, I'm gonna be really pissed. He should really go up to the second line. The window is wide open, despite Fred's 2027 claim.

Chapman & Wilson fall in the "good deals that will be hard to replace" category, so they are more like minuses than pluses.

Agreed, but with the money we have, we should be able to replace Gio, Chapman and Wilson, in kind or re-sign/extend them all.

Bring Bregman back and replace those 3 is really the only major priorities for this winter. (Maybe 1B, if we don't like Campbell there.)

I think they end up over the first line this season, so they'll try to stay under next season. Just my guess considering the potential work stoppages coming up and not knowing what the new CBA could look like.

I think one of them is replaced by a FA and one is replaced by an internal option (i.e. young arm converted to relief).

Bring back Golitto please.  Bergman for sure and while you’re at it Chapman as well.

Wacha got 3/51 last offseason. Is that in the ballpark of what Gio gets?

These types of extensions are always with risk, but IMO, it's the way to go.  It's a win-win.

I would rather see Breslow spending money on extending our youngsters than spending it on aging free agents.

Great job on both sides!

It's a big gamble for sure, what if Campbell never develops as an example.  But I love the balls of making moves like this and have to believe most of these deals will pay off for them.

Interesting they have not made this type of move with Mayer.  I still believe we have a long way to go before i feel comforable believing he will be a top player.

I think they have an idea of an extension amount they'd sign him for today (the Campbell extension or less because of health concerns), but it's lower than Mayer would take.

If they end up being over by $3-4M, we can think back and wonder if trading Yoshida and all but $3-4M paid out.

I don't think they'll be moving Masa.

Paying someone else $13-15M for him to play elsewhere is not appealing.

However, if the plan is to have him be the FT DH or DH platoon with Ref orRomy, then we have to find a spoit for an OF'er, even if on another team.

Yahoo really likes this signing. Their reporter said it was similar to the contract for Triston Campbell.

One report says Anthony "left $100M on the table."

He has two home runs. A rookie for the A's doubled that in one game.

I'd say Roman did alright for himself.

Yup, and the Sox, too.

Maybe - I really would like to see him back.

Jackson Merrill signed for 9/135. Wander signed for 11/182.

I think Roman would have rather taken this deal than gone for 15/240 with escalators. Not sure where the 100M comes from anyway.

The article did not really explain how they came up with $100M.

It's a nice round number.

I read it is a top 3 contract for players in their first year, but he did sign earlier in his ML career than Julio Rodriguez, who had played in 108 games and had over 450 PAs when he signed. (I forget who the next biggest deal was.)

I love this deal.

As fragile as Mayer is, I'd try to sign him to a Rafaela/Campbell type deal, now.

I'd love that deal for us, but if Gio keeps dealing I think he'd be looking for 3 or 4 @ 20

I could easily see him being a top player, if he stayed healthy.

And therein lies the problem.

Gio gets more, whether thats so much more that its no longer in the same "ballpark" - depends on what you mean by ballpark.  Total dollars +/- 15%, no Gio does better than that.

3@22.5 with an opt out after 1 or 4 @22.5

Perhaps.  But $130M has him and his family set for life. He will want for nothing.

I would rather take a chance on our young, home-grown players than on aging free agents.  Those free agent deals are typically going to cost more, and you're signing players to years that are beyond their prime.  Those contracts usually don't work out in the long run.

I think Mayer will eventually be extended as well, and I think it will be sooner rather than later.

That's the idea, though, isn't it?  The Red Sox are taking a huge risk.  The player in that situation has to be willing to leave some money on the table.  Otherwise, why not just wait until free agency to sign him?

Besides, that's an awful lot of money for a 21-year old.
