Hee hee, good point...a couple of Buehler-like starts from Gallen, and Talksox would be hanging Breslow.

I don't think we should give up on Buehler just yet, either.  I'm sure he's working hard with Bailey to fix the issues he's having.  Of course I'm not sure his much-repaired arm can do much about the issues...

At least Buehler gets hurt a lot, so you get some respite when he struggles since he hits the IL so often.

But Gallen almost NEVER gets hurt.  So when he struggles, you’re going to see it again.  And again.  And again. And again…

Gallen was really good right up to 2024.

As fans, we are basically just miserable pr**ks.  😀

Why take on a struggling pitcher for two months?

I like the idea of getting back Mitch Keller in a Duran trade…

Texas is a game under .500 and technically still in the wild card race, but they have 2 pitchers I think we need, eovaldi and Martin!!

would bres-slow be able to put together an offer that Texas would take???

why not Nick Pivetta instead? he is a few years older, makes about the same money and has far better numbers than Keller.

I look at that and I start believing in the play offs. Without it, I still see a hard time of it, even with the 10 game heater.

I've been in sell mode most of the year, I've definitely been moved into 'okay, go for it' mode, but this next stretch is the most defining one of the season yet (feels like we say that a lot but this in undoubtedly that).

Either way, whatever way it goes, we have incredibly tantalising and sellable assets, or pieces to move to get us over the hump. Going to be exciting one way or another.

I agree. While Bello and Gio are pitching like great #2s (and even #1's) right now, I'm not sure we can count on out top 3 to continue like this for 3 more months. Even if they do, adding a Ryan greatly improves our odds for the playoffs and having a 4th starter for a few playoff games and to use from the pen would be a huge asset.

I think the idea would be to keep Duran by trading for Gallen, instead of Keller, but I agree. We've had our share of projects and pitchers coming off big injuries.

I realize anyone can get hurt, but I want to get a steady guy as the better dice roll, even if it costs us more.

Plus, Keller or Ryan would be for 2025 and beyond. Gallen, Cease a few others would be just rentals.

I'm not saying your wrong, but you seem to value the last 3.5 months way more than the last 3-5 years.

Not that Pivetta has been bad over the last 3-5 years- quite the contrary, but so has Keller.

That looks very solid.

He has 2 years left on his deal (at ages 36 and 37.)

He made 74 starts from 2022-2024. That's not bad, but he does miss starts. He's averaged 25 GS and 140 IP per season.

As I've mentioned a few times...

The Red Sox should expect a call from houck’s agent once an hour until this is resolved

No, answer the phone, and say, "We'll put you on hold, until we decide."

This offseason, with 1 trade and 1 free agent signing, our 2026 starting rotation could be:

1.) crochet

2.) skenes

3.) cease

4.) bello

5.) dobbins

houck, uberstine, drohan, tolle and early as depth!!!!

Gio might be back. There is a $14M club option.

If he hits the innings target it becomes a mutual option and he's a goner.

He's got 77.2 IP and needs to reach 140.

There are 62 games left, and Gio could get 12-13 starts.

It's a close call. He'd need 5.1 per start w 12 GS or just under 5 IP per start w 13 GS.

Giving him the first start out of the ASB gives him a better chance at 13 GS.

They could of course offer him a new deal if they really like him.

True, but if he knows he will reach 140, he might demand a lot, but this assumes he stays healthy and keeps pitching like an ace or solid #2 for 12 more starts.

I haven't heard a peep about current extension talks.

I wouldn't expect them to be talking extension yet, I'd say there's a strong wait and see factor here...

A healthy bad pitcher. The horror.

Add Tanner Houck to the Dobbins-Crawford list of injuries to guys who will not pitch again for Boston this year.  Tanner's extended rehab stint has aggravated his flexor strain  and sets him back, wayyyyy baaack.

The Red Sox apparent surplus of potential starters this year certainly took a nose dive.   Up to Breslow to solve this dilemma with 1 or even two acquisitions for the mound core.

Sandoval was a damn good pitcher, but I hate counting on those types of mid season comebacks.

We need to add a #2.

Yes, damn good.

The guy had a 5.2 fWAR in just 235 IP from 2021-2022. That's excellent.

3.17 ERA (26th is not spectacular, but pretty good)

77 ERA- (23rd best) was better than Gausman, Gallen, Cole, Castillo and others for those two years.

From '21 to '23 his numbers dropped, some but were still pretty good:

7.5 fWAR

3.53 ERA (122 ERA+) 84 ERA- ranked 26th- above Cease, Nate, Castillo +++

The guy was pretty damn good.

That's one way to keep Duran and Abreu!

LOL!
