When are they going to get rid of this dude. Total disappointment since he's gotten here

Posted

The Red Sox are obligated to pay Trevor Story through 2027 (and Masataka Yoshida through 2027 and Rafael Devers through 2033). A combined 15 years at substantial salaries.

The Sox assumed significant risks.

Baseball Trade Values assigns the trio a combined value of a negative $120 million.

i admire him committing to come back last year.  That is real leadership.  That said, his batted ball rates last year collapsed, and at his age you have to worry that it might be a new normal.

Put another way, I suspect Mayer takes this job by the All Star Break at the latest.

I think Mayer has to prove he can hit off speed and breaking balls at Worcester before he gets called up

Atlanta needs an upgrade at shortstop!!!!!  Maybe bres-slow can do some selling????

They won't be able to trade Story, so the point is moot anyway.

It would take a chunk of money to get ATL to listen.

Getting Murphy back would be great, but that seems like a pipe dream.

The worry would happen, if Mayer gets hurt, but I suppose we could call up Anthony and then play Rafaela at SS, again.

Mayer replacing Bregman at 3B, after 2025 looks like the best shot for Mayer, barring an injury

How about just sending back Grissom? He got moved off short because they had a good ss? That is what I remembered.

Grissom is a horrible SS

He's been a disappointment - can't argue that.

But join me on the Trevor Story bandwagon.  There's plenty of room!

Or Story at 3b.  Assuming Bregman walks away from $80mill over 2 years (which I think is very unlikely)…

Story has been a dud no doubt about it. But he's the best we've got at SS until Marcelo Mayer is ready.

Also his contract is very untradeable while he is playing badly.

I think if he can get back to league average shortstop numbers and when Mayer is ready and called up, the Red Sox might be able to move Story on later near trade deadline without having to lose significant assets.

I could see Story or Mayer at 3B.

I'm thinking he might have a huge 2025 season and get the same or better offer that DET gave him, and he'll pounce.

Not that it matters, but Yoshida is even harder to trade.

Story is owed $77.5M/3 ($23.3 Tax hit) Nobody will pay that.

I keep looking at Seam Murphy, who is owed $60M/4 ($12.2M Tax) Of course, ATL would not do this deal, 1 for one, but what if we gave them Wong & Bleis and maybe some cash?

Campbell gave comments to the Athletic yesterday that Story was who he turned to when he was struggling in ST and he helped calm him down and get him on the right track again.

When are rightly obsessed with stats and analytics, but sometimes there's things that don't show up that we forget about. Story is a good clubhouse guy and great for the kids alongside Bregman.

Not sure Story has the arm for it. I know his velo is up a little, but I think he's a 2B/SS.

If they have to eat too much of he contract in a deal, just make him the UTIL IF for the remainder of the contract.

I could live with that when Mayer comes up even if he would be a pricey UTIL. Alongside Hamilton and (possibly eventually Rafaela when Anthony comes up) that's a lot of high quality, athletic coverage.

StatCast has him roughly equal to Bregman…

Most expensive bench in town, including the Patriots…

Story might not be such a good clubhouse guy if benched…

I'd rather have him be a relatively athletic veteran on the bench helping to coach the younger guys than a contract that you are just eating to play somewhere else. I'd rather have an overpriced Story than Romy.

I love arguments like this because you can just make up a bunch of stuff an go with it for whatever reason. He's always been a clubhouse leader, but now we can automatically assume he'll just be a pain in the butt! Classic.

I'm not giving up on Story as long as his defense is good.  We want a good defensive infield, don't we?

If Bregman opts out:

Story SS

Campbell 2B

Mayer 3B

If Bregman stays:

Mayer SS

Campbell 2B

Bregman 3B

Story UTIL

I don't think you lose much defensively either way.

I'm the guy who thinks Bregman isn't opting out.  I think he likes playing for Alex Cora and he has to like the direction the Red Sox are moving in.
