Even After Garrett Crochet Trade, Red Sox Pursuing Mariners Starter

Recommended Posts

Posted

Jon Morosi tweeted a nugget: the Red Sox aren't done pursuing starters.

If this is true, CBO Craig Breslow is serious about stabilizing the Red Sox rotation for 2025 and beyond. The Mariners have a slew of good starters but have stated they're not keen on the idea of trading the young cost-controlled core of Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryce Miller, and Bryan Woo.

The Mariners also have 32-year-old Luis Castillo rostered, who could likely be had for a reasonable prospect return due to the fact he is owed roughly $24 million per season through 2027 with a $25 million vesting option in 2028.

The Red Sox are now reduced to a "Big Three" with the removal of Kyle Teel in the Garrett Crochet trade. If they decide to pursue one of Gilbert, Kirby, or Miller it's likely that will be reduced to a "Big Two".

It can never happen. According to our resident Mariners fan, none of our players are better than any Mariner players, at any position, so we have nothing to offer as an upgrade.

Only after the Mariners sign Roki Sasaki.

😀😃😁

I did mention to you, several times, that a Castillo trade could save you enough money to spend on a younger SP'er while also filling another need with whatever you get back, in return.

This poster is not the Seattle Mariners.

Sorry.

However, after today's trade of Kyle Teel, the Red Sox might be interested in Seattle farmhand Harry Ford, MLB.com's seventh-ranked catching prospect who is a year younger than Teel, the third-ranked catching prospect:

You insisted the Mariners were not looking to trade Castillo. I know you are not the GM.

A month ago this poster wrote that the Mariners "might consider a trade of Luis Castillo at a value higher than his BTV value" when BTV valued Castillo at a negative $30.6 million.

Please refrain from unfounded accusations.

We better not trade Casas for Castillo

No chance. That would be a shocker.

I really need to go back and find posts where you said SEA is not looking to trade a SP'er?

why don't the Sox simply sign Sasaki?

It’s not that simple.

Why would Roki Sasaki sign with the Red Sox?

The provided link rebuts your allegation:

How about we offer more $$$?

It's not going to be a lot of money in any case.  The consensus is he'll sign where he wants to play.

You are really claiming you never said SEA is "unlikely to trade a SP'er?"

I'm not saying you never back-tracked or hinted they might relent , afterwards.

More money seems to work more often than not. (maybe one more year than anyone else at the same AAV.)

Call it a hunch but I don't think Sasaki is going to the Dodgers. I'd give better odds to the Padres, frankly.

He has shown a willingness to consider smaller-market teams and at some point, Japanese stars are not going to want to play second (or in Sasaki's case, third) fiddle on a team like the Dodgers.

I think SEA trades Castillo and signs Sasaki.

This would be their rotation for 3+ years:

3 arb years Gilbert (27, 28 in May)

4 arb years Kirby (turns 27 in Feb)

5 years Miller (26)

5 years Woo (turns 25 in Jan)

? years Sasaki (just turned 23)

Damn!!!!

Roki Sasaki is subject to restrictions on the international bonus pool money that render the monetary bidding process meaningless.

Sasaki will be under team control for six seasons, including three years at the league-minimum salary.

He's a special case though.

The way I read it, the biggest possible money difference between any two teams trying to sign him is $2.4 million.

Ahhh...

I remember that, now.

Yes, I agree- little hope he wants to play in BOS.
