OK. It's late in the day, and perhaps I have an excuse. But I don't get it!

I got the scrod part. But I think you mean the 'past participle'? (It's not late in the day yet, but once I get my 'medication' going, I'll give it another try!)

No it's the subjunctive but the joke is pluperfect past subjunctive. But I was lazy and did not want to type the whole thing out on my phone.

The talksox linguistics division brings up some interesting points. As an ESL guy, I had to look up what the hell y'all were talking about and increased my knowledge of ye olde english language.

I learned the most English when taking Latin at ND.

(Pretty sure you meant 'plu-perfect PASSIVE subjunctive'--spellcheck strikes again). If English had any such form (or how about in this context 'were English to have such a form'), wouldn't it have to be "would have gotten scrod"? I think that construction would be described as a plu-perfect passive conditional (not a subjunctive, although the difference is more or less in the description). But in any case, the word 'scrod' itself is still a past participle. I'll gladly wager a SeaDogs ticket on it.

Its a joke not an English grammar lesson. I have been telling it for at least sixty plus years. It comes from Bert and I, classic Maine humorists.

If you’re that confident in your joke, then accept jad’s wager. In case you missed it, he was the first to challenge your tense…

You can't get there from hee-yah!

Once again you prove you just don't get it! You really are humorless.

I got the joke. Even with it being told wrong.

But more important - interesting you keep coming after me and not the original guy who told you it was wrong. And put down a Sea Dog tickets wager.

I mean, if you’re holding out for hot dogs to be included, I get it. Or better yet - lobster rolls. But otherwise, not sure why you’re only responding to me. I never challenged you on it…

The only thing wrong is you are a humorless twat, trying to pick a fight over a silly joke, one that has been told a thousand times without anyone doing anything but laugh.

I feel for Cora!!!!!! It is going to be the longest 162 games ever for him. But I still stand by my 70 win projection

You could end up being right.

I hope not.

I'm still looking forward to watching how several players work out and hopefully do well or better. We have a bunch of players pre-prime or just entering it, so some potential is still alive.

It's not easy being optimistic, and I certainly am not expecting a great or even good season, but I think there will be enough good things happening to make watching the games fun enough (for me.)

I'm also going to be watching more minor league highlights than ever before. I'm going to try to go to a Sea Dogs game, too, after missing out, last year.

With the Brewers closer Devin Williams going down for 3 months, I wonder if they'll have any interest in Kenley. And Padres going for it with Cease and still needing outfielders, maybe Duran still isn't safe either.

I don’t get this acquisition from the Padres’ viewpoint. The unloaded one year of Soto to get 2 years of Michael King and 2 years of Cease? And did so at a time when they have no outfielders?

Also, as the Brewers are not a heavy-spending organization, they likely try to fill Williams’ temporary absence internally. I would expect former Red Sox RP Joel Payamps (2.55 ERA / 1.047 WHIP / 1.6 bWAR in 70IP in 2033) to be one such internal candidate. Adjust your fantasy drafts accordingly…

Which begets the usual questions about what the Sox would be getting out of such deals and what they would mean to the team's "competitiveness" in 2024.

Red Sox generating zero excitement in Sox Nation so far.

Wait til next year and it's not even the ides of March. Sad!

If we bewaring, then the misfortune and doom will come tomorrow, the 15th (hope Crawford isn't throwing)... luckily, the prospect team won't play until Saturday -- so the future will stay healthy...

... until future internal brace ops.

Bum ass Preller trying to save his job. Granted, he was trying to win a WS for the owner that was terminally ill.

Their goal to be as close to 4th place as possible by Sept 1?

Trading Duran for a pitcher certainly makes some sense team-building wise. Trading Kenley at this point would just be a salary dump.

Part of me understands it but part of me struggles to believe Duran is worth that much in a trade. Granted, Snelling is 20 and Head even younger and neither has much experience above A ball. (Snelling has pitched 17 IP in AA; Head has never been). So it’s not like these players are sure things…

All I did was say what the actual tense was and you then flew off the handle, calling me humorless because I didn’t appreciate this upper class joke clearly aimed at English Department chairpersons circles you hang out in. I didn’t try to pick any fight. That was and still is (

Oh and I kept asking why you were responding to me when your joke was actually challenged by someone else who even proposed a wager that you have been avoiding.

I also haven’t resorted to your level of childish insults. I will admit it’s odd for me to be the mature one. But here we are.

I will admit that this repeated admission that this joke has never gotten anything but laughs is tough to believe. Outside of jad questioning it and my one little response that you couldn’t handle, it appears to have fallen flat here..
