It would be interesting to see what our chances would be in other divisions, but it is what it is.

Other than the Yanks dropping by a lot, last year, and nearly overtaking us for last place, most of our division foes have not been in major decline.

2022>2023 Wins

83>101 BAL

86>99 TBR

92>89 TOR

99>82 NYY

78>78 BOS

We can't really count on staying the same and moving up to 4th place.

But the AL Least is overrated. I mean, they went 0-7 in postseason games. 0-7!!!

They all got all those wins by beating up on each other!!! (Sarcasm. Also not mathematically possible.)

I really don't mean to sound like playing in a tough division is an excuse for our losing season, but it does make a difference.

It would not get us to 90 wins, normally, but I do think we are better than some teams projected to win 1-3 or 4 more games than us, for what that is worth.

I understand people thinking 78 and 82 wins both suck, and they do, but winning 78-82 games with this schedule is harder than winning 82-86 in some other divisions.

It's not complaining. It's not whining. It's not excuse- making. It just is what it is: context.

Yeah, but a lot of those wins were against the Red Sox, so they don't really count.

Strangely, we did better vs the AL East in 2023 than 2022, despite playing them less often.

2023

BOS vs

6-7 BAL

2-11 TBR

7-6 TOR

9-4 NYY

Take away the Rays, and we were 22-17 vs the other 3. (24-28 overall)

2022

10-9 BAL

7-12 TBR

3-16 TOR

6-13 NYY

That was 26-50! YIKES!

Before Sept 4, 2023, we had these records vs AL East teams:

3-3 BAL

1-7 TBR

7-3 TOR

8-1 NYY

Total: 19-14

I know huh? It definitely helps that the AL East was the only division with a last place team…

Baseball is a strange sport, huh?

i thought we were playing a balanced schedule now?

With Soler signing with the Giants how many players that the Sox "had interest in" but didn't sign does that make it now?

This one is a good loss.

I hope Martin stays. I liked his stuff last year. I do not know how he was successful, but he was.

He's been really good for a long time.

Pinpoint control is his big thing.

He only walked 4% of the batters that faced him.

Sox listening to offers on Jansen, Martin and Schreiber...

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/02/red-sox-remain-open-to-offers-on-jansen-martin-schreiber.html

If it's to free up money to sign Monty, fine, otherwise, let's just have a full firesale and rip off the bandaid.

Why Schreiber?

I get moving Jansen and Martin, as both are one year deals. But Schreiber has 3 years of control left…

Good question.

Maybe it's because they're shooting for 2027!

Less than last year.

Wouldn't you listen to offers on EVERYONE if you're not competing this year? Is Schreiber untouchable for some reason?

Probably a good idea to wait until the franchise player is in his 30s…

Focus on short term players whose deals expire in the next 1-2 years. Pivetta makes more sense of this odd about rebuilding.

You have plenty of time to deal Schreiber later…

Should have sold Schreiber at the obvious height of his value in '22.

I could see that, but I think they might have valued him as even better if he was used like a normal reliever and not the guy who constantly came in facing tough hitters with men on base…

Is he paid like a franchise player?

Do you have to be paid like a franchise player to be the most important part of the franchise? All of the Sox' plans are on hold until Mayer et al show up. Seems like he's more important than the big dog.

Moving Schrieber certainly wouldn’t be about finances. Considering offers on him (or Martin, to a lesser extent) seems more of a broad openness by chief baseball officer Craig Breslow and the front office to consider opportunities that could balance the roster. Boston is still looking for right-handed hitting outfield help and could use additional certainty out of the rotation.

I guess just fix the roster later then?

Schreiber is the nucleus they're building the cell around right now. They don't want to waste his prime. Or his chromosomes.

The new plan is to have a great rotation and a bad bullpen. They figure that way you will at least watch the first 5 to 6 innings…

Crag has apparently been tasked with fixing the roster and shaving the payroll at the same time. It's working great so far.

I think you have to be. The point isn’t how good the player is but rather how invested the team is in the player…

As his performance only gets worse?
