The same reason that players went to Texas last year after the disastrous 2022 season even though Texas made some big signings before the 2022 season.

The Mets traded them away. Texas did not.

I’m not getting the comp.

Posted
Of course. I’m just not buying the idea that the Mets, Yanks and Giants look any more like future winners than us.

If anything, we MIGHT look better positioned.

If you go on the recent past, the Yanks, unfortunately, profile as perpetual winners. They haven't had a losing season since 1992.

I get that. Really quire astonishing.

We have the rings, and to me, the Yanks are trending downwards.

I see us all pretty close to even, going forward.

If I'm comparing the Sox to other teams right now the big negative is the *apparent* dysfunction in the front office. I think the Sox have a bad rep in this area right now, and all the people who declined to interview for CBO are more evidence of it.

Certainly we have had major issues in that area.

I was speaking more to the claims that FAs are avoiding us, because we don't look like we have a winning outlook. I'm not saying we do, but I don't see the NYM, NYY or SFG as being any better on those fronts.

Yankee fans and media have been all over Yankee management for a decade.

The SFG have made great efforts to bring in top talent, but seem to come up short every time.

The Mets have spent like maniacs, but sucked in '23 and traded away 2 of MLB's best pitchers this past summer.

I was only speaking in the context of these 4 teams, seemingly the finalists on Yamo.

Why are we posting in two threads here? They're both the freakin' same. And no mods to fix anything. Too funny. :D

I guess one could be viewed as forcing on just what is happening in the off season, and the this one is about how the 2024 team outlook is. Both are related to each other, and often are on the same topics.

It would not be the first time.

If it exists, the dysfunction in the front office is all on Henry. I think he has allowed the FO to become a bureaucracy where too many voices have to be heard before anything is done. He can end it by empowering his CBO..

One way to empower Breslow is too make a personal pitch to Yakamoto if he is the pitcher Breslow really wants.

The Mets Steve Cohen has met with Yakamoto twice. If the Sox lose out on Yakamoto without Henry backing his CBO then it really says Henry is not that vested in his CBOs success.

So, if Cohen let's his GM go to $400M, not allowing Brez to match or top that shows a lack of commitment to success?

We can maybe get Monty and Snell for that. Maybe Monty, Imanaga & Stroman. Certainly, we can get Monty, Imanaga, Garver and Merrifiled.

The thing is, we need more than just Yamo to win in 2024. Adding just Yamo & Merrifield will not be enough. We'd need a trade, too- or more.

The key point is the Henry must do what Cohen did and meet with Yakamoto with Breslow. Henry must put his personal prestige on the line.

The talk in Boston is that Henry has lost interest in the Red Sox. A public gesture would help show that Henry still cares about the team.

Not sure how you can say we are pretty even with the Yankees right now. They finished several games ahead of us last year and have added Soto and Verdugo while we have added a juicer and some high end castoff P so far. Also you kNOW the Yankees have at least one more big signing to come. Can anyone say with certainty the Sox do too?

Are we seriously playing the “O’Neill is on steroids” card? No wonder our star players leave and no one wants to come here and replace them…

We don't know how the Sox-Yamo meeting went. Maybe we pulled out all the stops: maybe not.

I don't disagree on Sox fans needing a big splash to ease the unrest. The Devers extension was not enough.

The Yankees are in decline. They have Soto for one year. Their budget is a mess. They are loaded with injury prone players- more than even the Sox are.

Their farm is not what it used to be. They are an aging bunch of overpaid players who haven't even been to the WS in 2 decades.

Most of their best players are old. How many of these guys are their top 10-15 players?

Age

35 LeMahieu $15M x 3

34 Rizzo $20M x 1

34 Stanton $25M x 5

33 Cole $36M x 6

31 Judge $40M x 8

31 Rodon $27M x 5

31 Trevino 1 more arb

30 Holmes last arb

Last arbs: Torres, Dugo, Kahnle 7 Loaisiga

Maybe they decide to spend like the Mets, but they've held off spending real big for a long time.

MLB Pipeline ranked the Yanks farm #21. (Sox 16th mid 2023.)

Bleacher Report 2024: Yanks 19th and Sox 3rd.

Wait a second. I thought it was just about the money. If that’s the case, we know they all will come regardless of the boneheaded signings we might make. $$$. I’m all in. Let’s go Sox and to hell with the crap climate and everything else……

That is the point we do not know. Cohen made it public that he had dinner with Yamamoto. Henry must do the same, otherwise he is hanging Breslow out to dry IMO.

Bres-slow has already been dried out!!!

If we lose out, yes. No matter what we did, if we don't sign him, fans will bitch about not doing enough.

If it turns out we were close in the bidding but did not go more, JH is going to get the blame.

BTW, it was mostly his fault under Bloom, too.

Get it done JH, we need pitching big time. Snell is the only other option and he will most likely get 300M as well. Unless they get Montgomery but I feel he won't be that cheap either.

I like Monty slightly better than Snell, but I would not call him "full throttle."

Monty and Burnes, yes.

Monty and Framber, yes.

Monty and Imagana, not really.

What if Henry is such a horrible dinner companion he blows the whole deal single-handedly and ruins all Breslow’s hard work? That would be even worse, because then the attitude will be “well Henry did have that dinner, so Breslow is clearly the problem.”

I agree with this wholeheartedly. The Sox have one of the largest FO's in baseball (maybe even the largest) and a lot of it is at the tippy top. I can see having a lot of voices down on the farm working with individual players, but the sheer amount of EVP's this org rolls out is staggering. Because of this, no matter what direction Crag wants to take the team, there is going to be a dissenting opinion from another higher up that will be leaked to the press. It is not an ideal workplace and it's not one where quick decisions are probably fostered.

You're not getting Monty and Snell for 200M over 10/12 years. The AAV's just won't match up.

Add in a decent second baseman and there you go. Two what look to be decent starters and help up the middle and that would make more sense to me than one big splurge.
