The BUT was doing a lot of heavy lifting to justify the signing there...

I wasn't trying to justify the signing. I listed all the signings from $3M to $9M. I know some sucked. All the $10M signings sucked. Most of the $10M or more signings have sucked or are TBD.

I just made a couple comments about the worst of the $3-9M signings to show maybe they weren't as bad as they first looked. Diekman was still a bad signing. There is no "justification,," but we were lucky to get out of ost of the contract money, and got back McGuire for the effort. McGuire does not make the signing any better, but I'm glad we have him.

You were right on Perez. There is nothing that could be said to lessen how much he sucked.

Bloom "didn't do badly" with the Diekman signing.

You really have a way with twisting what people write.

I wrote:

You get what you pay for, but Bloom did not do badly with these lower/mid-range deals at $3-9M.

This is not the same as saying he did not do badly with every single signing in this range. It's a statement about the overall quality of that range signing vs the $10M/1 range and the $10M per year plus range.

You add "the Diekman signing," like that is what I said.

With Bloom the promise of the future was overcome by the discomfort of the present. Great line I just read. Of course his favorite character was UnderDog, which didn’t help either.

While Bloom had no problem churning and burning through the Joel Payamps of the world, he could have claimed Adolis Garcia with a waiver claim in February 2021. I guess waiting for Danny Santana was more important.

Payamps actually has a pretty good year in Milwaukee. Sox would have been much better off holding Payamps and jettisoning Ort.

Adolis Garcia, twice DFAd, is actually a reason to continue the “bargain basement” scavenging. All Star outfielder with an ALCS MVP under his belt. Makes Troy O’Leary look like Dwayne Hosey…

There seems to be a pattern of ex-Sox players improving after leaving Boston.

Brasier

Kike

Even JD had his best OPS+ since 2019.

Payamps

Martin Perez

Springs

I guess one could counter with names like...

Vaz

JBJ

Beni

Workman

Among others.

So it's kind of a wash?

The only really annoying one there is Brasier, because it was such a quick fix by the Dodgers. Bye bye Dave Bush!

Springs was the big punch in the gut.

The martin Perez turn-around hurt, too.

ERA+

89 in 2 years w BOS in 176 IP

118 in 2 years w TEX in 338 IP, afterwards

He did drop off in 2023, but if he was the 2022 season he had w TEX for us, we may have made the WS

Xander's wRC+ was the worst since 2017. It's just confirmation bias. You see someone doing good and you remember when they were on the Red Sox. You forget all the people that either continue to suck or do worse.

Not Springs?

Payamps had a 2.55 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 4.53 K/BB and was with 1.6 bWAR for Milwaukee this year…

Sox should still pay Bush to coach an AL East rival against them. Every time he goes to the mound to discuss strategy, the next pitch is a home run!

Springs spent a year in the TBR bullpen. He was converted into a starter the following year and had a career year. He blew his arm out at the beginning of the third year. Seems like a normal Rays progression?

I know you forgot Xander. It's fine. I'm just saying that it's "confirmation bias" that people believe that generally Sox players do better after leaving.

I did not forget him. He didn't really get better or worse, after leaving. He is about like he was from '21-'22.

It's weird how people assume people forget things, just because their posts aren't in great detail.

MLBTR says the Sox had made an offer for Sean Murphy...

Cotillo goes on to report that the Red Sox “made a serious run” at a trade with the Athletics to acquire All-Star catcher Sean Murphy, making what Cotillo describes as a “competitive” offer to the A’s before they ultimately settled on a three-team deal with the Braves and Brewers to send Murphy to Atlanta. The Red Sox were among the many known suitors for Murphy last offseason, though the A’s set their asking price rather high, with right-hander Brayan Bello’s name floated in the rumor mill as a potential return. That being said, Boston’s level of interest appears to have been greater than was initially reported, given the new information that Boston made a formal offer for Murphy’s services.

Bloom wore a tuxedo and still couldn't close the deal!

Bloom mentioned Murphy by name in his interview after the 2022 deadline…

It was competitive, but Bloom didn't want to have to give up Sale's contract in the deal................

MLBTR reports....

“There are rumblings” that former Red Sox chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom might land with the Cardinals in an advisor role, Peter Gammons reports (on X). Not much had been heard about Bloom’s potential next step after he was fired by the Sox in September, before Gammons’ item and today’s news that Bloom turned down overtures from the Marlins about their front office vacancy. An advisory job would be an interesting way of Bloom to keep a foothold in baseball without committing to another full-time post, as Gammons notes that Bloom is prioritizing time with his family.

Why not just take a year off? It's not like being away from the game for a year is going to make everyone forget who you are?

Maybe he wants to impress the Cardinals and move up in their system.

Makes no sense if he was already being considered for a top position weeks after being fired.

Maybe he likes the idea of being a consultant and being his own boss, setting his own hours, and overcharging insanely lucrative rates for everything he does…

Bloom already committed to regular gigs on American Pickers and Pawnshop... but was rejected on Antiques Roadshow, for offending senior customers by undervaluing all their treasures.

His new TV contract: one year, $10 million dollars.

I just meant the part about moving up in the Cardinals system.

Bloom's new awesome advisory job advice:

1. Don't trade prospects!

2. Don't trade veteran players with expiring contracts not named Vazquez at the deadline!

3. Don't sign big money free agents!

4. Don't even offer mid-money free agents one cent over market value (established via organizational analysis by 30 anal-retentives in the Anal-ytics Dept)

5. Don't extend homegrown stars (unless they lead the majors in errors at their position for the last six years).

As 700hitter would point out, being around the house all the time is not always the best situation when you're married.
