That might have been the plan since 2019, but they have just snowed us all along.

Had they just owned up to it and had fire sales, yearly, we'd be much better situated, right now.

In the past they've usually been able to manage the steps back some ... and add kids to the moving train successfully.

Now the Dodgers have shown that being able to have both ... the fertile farm system along with the "always be chasin" attitude at the big league level. The Red Sox since Theo left have not been able to strike that balance.

I think they will - well not go "all-in" on the kids, but everything they do position player wise will be short term in such a way as for the kids to be able to take jobs.

But I am still somewhat optimistic the team will add significant pitching just because they have to. And yeah, I think signing them is more sensible than trading given where the franchise is.

If they add nothing:

Bello

Sale

Pivetta

Crawford

Houck

It's just last year's rotation without Paxton. Good for 22nd in the league! May be where the payroll is headed?

Once again, any hope of a miracle begins with the longshot hope that Sale starts 29 games with a sub 2.80 ERA.

If he did both of those in one year it'd be a first for his career.

Exactly.

Ben tilted too much to prospect hoarding. (I have always felt he would have traded some, had he been given 1 more year, but still...)

DD tilted too much to the here and now, although I'm happy it worked for 3 years.

Bloom was a repeat of Ben.

It's hard to view Brez as another DD, but like Ben and Bloom, his spending limits may doom him to another unbalanced approach.

BTW, had Ben and Bloom better spent what they were given, they may have lasted longer than 4 years. They both were given more than just peanuts.

Feel like zero pressure on Breslow...Bloom performed miserably overall under pressure, but now? It's who cares.

Yes and no. If they had their Winter Weekend right now, Brez would get his first taste of abuse from the fans.

Well, that is close to what our hopes have come to, right now.

BTW, Sale has come somewhat close to that several times:

GS/ERA

2012-2014 (3 year average: 28 GS and 2.79 ERA)

29/3.05

30/3.07

26/2.17

31/3.41 in 2015

2016-2018: (3 year average: 30 GS and 2.85 ERA)

32/3.34

32/2.90

27/2.11

2012-2018 average:

30 GS

2.91 ERA

I think fans realize, now, it's not on the GM, anymore.

Some still might, but I think most can see the sham for what it is, now.

If he's truly a Yalie, he'll tell Henry he was confused and spend the weekend in Springfield, VT.

But even on this forum I think there's a sense that Breslow is just the new patsy, and it's ownership that is sticking it to us.

Yep, right where JH and Werner want him. That's what he's paid for.

I think with Ben he was told "go spend" by management and ended up doing so in a wretched FA year.

Are you only a patsy if you don't know you're a patsy? I think Crag knows what the deal is and is just willing to work under those terms. Not sure it makes him a patsy. He just took a CBO position for a declining franchise that is now a mid-market team.

Maybe. But if it's true that Breslow might talk to the press again in January, then all we're really left with is Sam Kennedy, in the line of liar.

Brez may be realizing that the market once again has exceeded any spending limits from his bosses (stuck in the 20teens). But Brez is also smart enough not to make the same Bloom mistakes and answer frequent media/fan questions with ******** and inanities.

If you redo that offseason and spend the Hanley/Pablo money differently:

SP Ervin Santana

SP AJ Burnett (don't sign Masterson either)

3B Chase Headley

OF Nelson Cruz

That Spring Training interview with Bloom and his Whistle Pig was cringe.

The only good news so far this off-season is, outside of the Yankees acquiring Soto and Verdugo, the AL East teams have all been equally inactive.

The Orioles have brought in Kimbrel, but he’s a step down from Bautista.

The Rays have not added anyone and lost Glasnow.

The Blue Jays haven’t added anyone and somehow decided to stockpile a few former Sox coaches as their big off-season plan.

So at least the gap isn’t widening…

The glass is still half full, but the milk is going sour.

If you add the Pablito and HRam deals together, nobody can claim JH tied Ben's hands, that winter.

The next winter saw the Price signing (under DD.)

What Ben failed to do, beyond making good on one big signing, was pull the trigger on a major prospect trade.

BTW, two of Ben's major additions, HRam and Porcello both did way better in DD's first year than Ben's last year. Flip those two seasons, and maybe Ben gets another season as GM.

If he knew, he wouldn't have done the Betts dance at the Winter Weekend and then told everyone it was going to be awesome. He has no clue on how to be coy.

According to @alexspeier, it doesn’t seem like the Red Sox have changed their stance about trading for Corbin Burnes or Shane Bieber.

“Burnes is an unlikely target given he’ll be a free agent after next season and seems unlikely to sign an extension before testing the market. Bieber likewise has just one year of control remaining, though he seems at least open to the idea of a longer-term deal.”

Also, Shota Imanaga is expected to visit the states next week and could be using Eduardo Rodriguez’s deal as a “reference point.”

@JustinMLB

Zack Wheeler, Walker Buehler, Corbin Burnes, Mike Soroka, John Means, Max Fried are all UFAs after 2024. It’s a good time to snag an ace if you need one.

Time to start the Off-Season 24-25 Thread!

Good point. Did he know it after Betts?

What about deal like Castillo or Luzardo- pitchers with 3 or more years on control?
