Prior to last season, he was ranked in the 40's (FanGraphs) for the Guardians, whereas Whitlock was in the top 20 for the Yanks. He walks a lot of guys and doesn't have a third pitch apparently. Not sure the Sox need another bullpen guy to stash.

If there's a Rule 5 guy that could make sense it would be Carlos De La Cruz (PHI) a RHB who plays OF/1B. I mentioned a some others a few days ago like Kristian Robinson, another RHB OFer.

No love for White Sox right-handed hitting 1b/3b/OF Wilfred Veras, son of former Red Sox 3b Wilton Veras (and cousin of Fernando Tatis Jr.)? .879 OPS in limited action in AA last season…

Tuesday is the MLB Draft Lottery. (The Sox have a 1.2% chance at pick #1)

Wednesday is the Rule 5 Draft (The Sox may lose a couple players from: Drohan, Scott, Bastardo or Fernández?)

MLB.com lists its top five starting pitchers who might be available in a trade this offseason:

We know that this winter’s free agent market is much stronger in pitching than it is in position players, but at the same time, we also know that there’s not nearly enough supply to meet demand. It’s not that hard to find a contender who could use a starter, because

On Tuesday columnist Jim Bowden at The Athletic matched the Red Sox with free agent lefthander Blake Snell under a seven-year, $174 million contract:

MLB.com listed their best candidate to be selected from each team. Angel Bastardo was the choice from Boston. Of course, historically maybe 2 players from that list get selected.

No one saw Song and Politi last year. Maybe someone unsuspected goes this year, like Van Belle or Santos or Zeferjahn….

Maybe Penrod.

Kristian Robinson has an interesting background:

This summer Robinson had a return stint with a minor league club where I held a minimum-wage job. Everyone in the organization was pulling for Robinson.

Hit well in AA, but OPS'd under 800 in A+ this year and seems to be more DH than anything else. He was moved off of 1B/3B because he was pretty bad there. Was OF only in '23.

I'm not sure if Bastardo is eligible for the MiLB portion, but if he's taken in the MLB portion he'll be returned 100%. I don't know why he's projected to be taken. Drohan at least is left handed and pitched well in AA. Aside from Drohan, I'm not really concerned about who is taken, even if it's Scott/Paulino/Castro.

Yeah, it was brought up before. High variance with him. Probably a guy a new GM wouldn't draft. It's just a Rule 5 pick, so no harm in bringing someone in for Spring Training.

Gambrell is another…

Gambrell really is another 5th starter at best. If he gets taken it's not really a big deal. He's most likely just an up and down guy.

Penrod has such a SSS that nobody really knows what he can do. I can't fault the Sox for not protecting him especially with his control issues. Sox took a chance on a indy ball guy and he looked good for a few months, hard to see another team thinking that means he's MLB ready when he's only thrown 20 Innings in High A (4.96 xFIP).

Both would be interesting to watch in '24 if they stay in the system, but if they are drafted I'm not concerned. Penrod would probably be returned. Gambrell just doesn't have a high ceiling so if he is gone for good it's no big loss.

Gambrell is 26, so what we see is likely close to the best he can be. For some reason, I have liked him more than others. I expected a higher placement on soxprospects' list, but they know more than I do.

Penrod is also 26, but yes, his sample size is small.

I doubt either gets selected, unless someone thinks a tweek can make thyem better than who they are.

The tough part with Gambrell's age is that he missed 2020, was injured during '21 and missed all of '22. That's basically 3 years of lost development. He still has catching up to do so I wouldn't necessarily say he's reached his ceiling yet.

Good point. I didn't realize he missed so much time.

sxoprospects has him starting out in AAA, and Penrod starting in AA, so maybe Gambrell is more ML ready.

Gambrell could be an emergency starter if needed. I don't know if Penrod could do so reliably. More likely that Penrod is just thrown into a pen somewhere.

I saw an article on MLBTR that figures the Sox will be more likely to add pitching on the trade market as opposed to FA. Pretty much in keeping along the philosophy John Henry has followed for now several years. I guess we are going to find out just how good our farm system is now. I am certainly hoping they hang on to Mayer and Teel.

I'd hang onto Teel and Anthony. I think all the other prospects could be had in the right trade.

MLB trade rumours are reporting that the sox (among others) are pivoting from the Otahni sweepstakes, as they don’t thing he will sign with the Red Sox.

When it comes to pursuing free agents or the possibility of swinging trades, the only voices I trust less than MLB reporters (except sometimes Alex Speier) are those from the Red Sox front office.

For fans who look daily for moves their team can make to improve, the baseball offseason can be excruciating, empty and deceptive (with lots of politics, gamesmanship and public relations that conspire to the latter).

All of the above has come to define Red Sox Nation since the days of Dombrowski, who'd tell the public he was going to get a closer or an ace or two -- and then be the first GM on the boat to actually reel them in.

and then who is shortstop after Story [who usually plays about 100 games a year and hits .230?}

sorry but the only thing I trust John Henry with is that he will raise ticket and concession prices again

I have Anthony significantly above Mayer.

If I had to trade one of our top 3: Anthony, Mayer or Teel, it would be Mayer.

We sign one or promote one of the two dozen we drafted.

Who plays OF, when Dugo bolts after 2024?

Yoshida should DH.

Duran, Abreu, Rafaela and Refnsyder are all either unproven, better used as a platoon or both.

I doubt we were ever seriously thinking of him, so I don't think the word "pivot" applies, here.

Prior to coming to BOS, he played 91% of every game. He also has a career 265 average and is signed through '27.

Once Story's contract is closer to its conclusion, any number of prospects could be ready since the Red Sox HAVE DRAFTED AND SIGNED VIA IFA A METRIC f***TON OF SHORTSTOPS in the past few years (Zanetello, Cespedes, Anderson, Alcantara, Arias, etc.).
