Great work by Paxton and the bullpen!!!! And pretty nifty catching by McGuire.

Hitting, not so much. But enough to win.

Still find it hard to believe the Dodgers didn't re-sign Martin. He's been immense for the SOX.

Several, here, questioned the signing of old fogies like Martin & Jansen.

Technically the correct call.

They should do like softball and put an orange bag so they can just run through it in foul ground

Technically the correct call? No way. Explain yourself.

I doubt there's a better set-up and closer dual in the AL.

Add Wink, and we have a pretty awesome top 3.

Quite a chance from 2022.

#1 pick Kyle Teel, 3-5 with 3 RBI tonight. Hitting .600 for High A Greenville. Maybe Bloom hit on this guy.

Must be just blind luck.

I'd like anyone who has ever umped at any level to explain that call on McGuire last night.

I saw it live and watched the replay three times, and he ran directly down the chalk line through the middle of the bag at first base. If that's a violation of any kind, then everything we've ever been taught or have coached on baserunning has been wrong our entire lives.

The obligation has always been on the defense to compensate in order to get the out and not hit the runner with the throw -- just like when the first baseman lines up a throw from the catcher on a sac bunt and yells, "Inside!" or if the first baseman is throwing to second trying to start a 3-6-3 DP.

Many ugly losses, too.

The lumber is in a slumber, so 3-1 ain’t bad, but those bats have got to get going sooner than later.

According to MLB rules

When running the last half of the way to first base while the ball is being fielded in the vicinity of first, a baserunner must stay within the three-foot runner's lane to the right of the foul line unless they are avoiding a player fielding a batted ball. If the umpire determines that the baserunner has interfered with the player taking the throw at first base by running to the left of the foul line or to the right of the runner's lane, the baserunner can be called for interference.

Mcguire was on the left side running through first base. He needed to be in the RIGHT side.

Therefor correct call.

Even the announcers who are pro Red Sox and are not subjective to any other teams and solely think everything should be called in favor of the Red Sox said at the end it look like it was the correct call and said Mcguire needed to turn right at the end before crossing 1st base

Winckowski has been decent. I wouldn't put him near Chris Martin though. I think he's very middle relieverish.

I know it's dumb, but they just need to add the orange bag that they have for softball. It would get rid of these interference calls that are so maddening and help with player safety.

This year, he has been better than the "middle." Yes, of course Martin is in a category above Wink, but Wink probably compares favorably to most team's #3 RP,er, so that's why I mentioned our top 3 RP'ers rank pretty highly, as do our top 2.

Some of Wink's numbers don't rank all that highly, but he has been an essential part of our pen and team success, this year. He is mid to higher leverage eating innings at a good pace.

If you add Pivetta as a RP'er and Crawford, you could probably go 4-5 deep and look pretty good, too.

You always do this "most team's #3" garbage. He's a 0.4 fWAR guy who had a rough June.

If you get hit hard and can't strike guys out, it's not a recipe for long term success at the back end of a playoff bullpen. You can't say "it's because of his sinker" because it has a -2 RunValue.

His xFIP is basically the same as Joe Jacques and Chris Murphy. He's only had two clean outings in his past 10.

He has a 17th percentile Fastball spin rate. Of course he doesn't strike hitters out.

Yes, many of his stats do not look like top #3 RP'er numbers, but how many teams have 3 RP'ers at 0.4 or better?

He does have a 1.4 bWAR.

And a FUBAR of 0.9.

27 of the 30 MLB teams have at least 3 relievers with 0.4 fWAR or better.

125 relievers have 0.4 fWAR or better.

The 90th reliever is Hector Neris at 0.5 fWAR (1.49 ERA, 48 Inn, 4.40 xFIP, 96.1 LOB%).

It's hard to find those ranking numbers for bWAR or FUBAR.

On McGuire's very next AB, he did the exact same thing -- run the chalk line like he was taking a DUI test -- but this time he dove head-first straight into the bag. SAFE!

The throw came from the other direction, so that must make it ok to violate all rules of fan comprehension...
