It just so happens that I'm the other guy here who is fascinated by CERA.

Your points are well taken. I'm just feeling pessimistic about the 2023 team right now, and whether it's rational or not, the fact we didn't allow less than 4 runs in any of our last 10 games has something to do with that.

If McGuire isn't the guy, we have a serious issue on our hands.

Please do not mention "issue on the hands" when speaking of McGuire.

The thing is a lot of these names just don't move the needle much one way or the other.

The dice roll on Story is looking like a significant losing bet for both 2022 and 2023.

The cost of Story makes the needle move further on 2022 vs anyone in 2021. I was pointing out numbers of dice rolls that worked vs did not work.

Only Renfroe worked in 2021, unless you count deadline moves.

Only Story and JBJ did NOT work in 2022. It was more the returning players that let us down in '22- NOT Bloom dice rolls.

If the Sox are a middling team but there are big years from Yoshida, Casas, Bello and other future pieces, Henry may be convinced to keep Bloom.

Agreed, yet only Yoshida, from your list, is a Bloom acquired player.

I’m still on the wait, and see mode on Yoshida, and how he handles playing in BOSTON.

So, he is a suspect, too- along with Turner, Duvall...

Yes! I’m always on a wait, and see when someone comes to Boston to see how they handle playing there. Some embrace it, and some don’t.

Henry has booted Theo, Ben and Dave in spite of 4 rings won and massive growth in franchise value.

It's pretty hard to predict what he'll do at this point...

It's why I put "may" in my sentence. Who the hell knows...

Oh no! Not in Boston!

Are we worried about the s***** reporters or just racist nonsense being hurled from the stands?

If you think every player who has come to Boston has handled it well then I think you are wrong, because I don’t, and that is my opinion. s***** reporters? How about those bad sports radio talk show callers, and yes wait for it those bad posters on TalkSox, and other venues of the like.

What we post on here has no impact anywhere else. This place is like a black hole.

Because we all know no other city in the USA has talk radio and sports media.

Probably safe to assume Kyoto had it as well, and there the media might have even spoken his first language!!!

Do you really think all talk radio, and sports media are the same in every city?

They have different protocols in Kyoto.

Where does the belief come from that Boston is a tougher market to play in? I think the internet has become the great equalizer and has made Boston less of an outlier now. People are used to additional scrutiny.

Besides from particular media members or the normal racist accusations that get thrown at fans in Boston, what is the real difference?

Also, Yoshida is going into a season where most people are already down on the team. It's not like the expectations are that they will win the division. That microscope that may have once existed, just isn't there this season.

I’ll agree that the microscope isn’t what it once was for the players. Bloom being a team player has put most of the microscope on himself.

He’ll be a star and a fan fav. He has a New England name Masatakah Yoshidah. He’s the least of our worries. The health of the rotation on the other hand….

The thing is, you can win 10 dice rolls but they might only add up to 2 wins.

Whereas 1 dice roll you lose might cost you 3 wins.

Yup.

I still like the totality of the pre 2022 winter moves vs 2021, total value quality and quantity, despite the JBJ disaster and questionable Story signing.

We like dingahs and he's got pop. He should fit in. His defense will be better than Manny or Wily Mo Pena or Schwarber. If he hits, people will like him. That inside out swing should get him a ton of doubles at Fenway.

It’s weird how Sox fans think of you play on the Red Sox, you’re inundated with pressure and become a virtual prisoner that can’t go out in public, but if you play for the Braves or Royals or Brewers or Cubs, you can blend in with the fans while in full uniform…

I do think the Boston media is harsher than most, but I do think the whole "wilt under spotlight" thing is way overblown. Maybe a handful of players might have been affected, but it's hard to prove.

There is probably some less day to day pressure playing for the Nats/Pirates/A's, but media really is 24/7 now for all of these guys.

What's the spotlight this year? A lot of sportswriters were already writing this team off and saying that nobody cares anymore. If that's truly the case, shouldn't it be easier on these guys this year?

You don’t think the sports writers are justified in tempering their expectations for the Red Sox for this coming season? Is the old joint sold out for tomorrow’s game? I would say to start the season there is not much steam in the old pressure cooker. Like I said earlier the pressure cooker is being held by Bloom.

The media will still bash those who do poorly more than most city medias, especially if they are being paid a lot.

Again, I don't think it has much affect on 99% of players, if not more.

The question is though, how hard is the Spanish-speaking media? A significant chunk of players speak little to no English and simply ignore the English language media. And turning up the volume actually doesn’t break the language barrier.

As for Yoshida, as I understand he speaks no English, I don’t think media pressure is going to be an issue…

I’m willing to bet most players don’t even listen to local sports talk radio. Why would they?

You are the reason we are having this conversation. Initially, you showed concern that Yoshida may not be able to handle playing here. But now there is no pressure cooker? I don't get it.

I've heard him speak English. He wrote his introduction entirely in English. He doesn't speak it fluently, but I've heard he is actively working on it.
