Red Sox All-Star third baseman Rafael Devers will not entertain extension talks once the season begins, according to The Boston Globe’s @alexspeier.

I don't blame him.

There are times that is said and maybe even meant, but things change.

The Sox are on the clock.

If it gets to April, they need to either deal him during the season or he's gone. No way are they extending him at that point. I think they need to extend him before he even shows up to ST.

The sooner the better. Because a lot of players don’t like negotiating during the season…

I would think we should know real soon, if a deal can get done, or not. I doubt we'd wait until right before opening day to trade him, but I guess it's possible.

Trading him at the deadline is possible, but I have to think we'd get more, now, that at the deadline.

I hope we get a contract signed. The longer this goes on, the more I think he's a goner.

Maybe it's just wishful thinking, but it just makes too much sense to sign him, on so many levels. I'm not sure "sense" applies, today, but I'm staying hopeful.

At least we can relax about it this time, knowing exactly how it's going to turn out.

Ah yes. The beauty of being a pessimist is you always wind up either being proven correct or pleasantly surprised…

After Betts and Bogey, I don't know if this even qualifies as pessimism...

I’m still hopeful they chose Devers over Bogaerts, knowing they wouldn’t be able to sign both…

It seems like many felt we could and would sign

one. Now, that one is gone, all hope is gone.

I'd say it's more like 2 down, 1 to go.

If they were being aggressive in their offers to Devers it would already be done. Instead what we're hearing is "galaxies apart".

I see absolutely nothing to base any hope on. I wish I could say differently.

This may have been the plan, when they were willing to spend $200 million on one of them.

But two months later, Devers now knows he can ask for twice that amount -- and also knows if he waits and has another really good season, he can probably get close to Judge money.

Bloom knows, too, but just stated, “We will probably, I think, go beyond reason to try to get this done," said Bloom, suggesting the Red Sox are willing to go outside their comfort zone, paying whatever is needed to keep Devers in Boston for the foreseeable future. "Hopefully we can get this done. There are always going to be limitations, like people can just put something plain out of reach."

Bloom's bold faced words again: probably -- I think -- beyond reason -- to try -- hopefully -- limitations -- plain out of reach.

This is a pipe dream. Devers is gone. Mookie is twice the player Devers is and they wouldn't sign him for 350 Mil. So I doubt they sign Devers for that. In fact it would probably take closer to 400 Mil with the way contracts have been rolling out these past few weeks.

Liar, or looking for his infamous 3rd option in the fork in the road again?

A lot of what has gone on, this winter, has been in secret.

I'm not sure who said "galaxies apart," but if either side feels like that, it's not good.

Would it be better to trade him now or in July?

“Galaxies apart” is disheartening. It just comes down to whether or not it’s believable. And current…

Based on the way they treated Mookie and Xander, it is believable and most likely accurate

Mookie was mistreated? Reportedly he was offered $300 mill over 10, which at the time would have been the third largest deal in MLB history.

Mookie wanted more, but he was hardly mistreated…

Before the season.

Acquiring team would get a full year of Devers plus a comp pick if there’s no extension…

Before the season, the Sox called Devers long term as a 1b/DH and tried to extend him with an AAV similar to the deal Matt Olson received from Atlanta. And long term, Devers probably is a 1b/DH.

In the last 3 years, his OPS+ ranks third among active third basemen, behind only a Jose Ramirez and Manny Machado, and just ahead of Austin Riley and Nolan Arenado. As a first baseman in that same timeframe, Devers would have been tied for fifth in MLB among qualified hitters, trailing Goldschmidt, Guerrero Jr., Freeman, and Alonso, and tied with Matt Olson. (Maybe the Sox use of him as a contract comp wasn’t so random.)

If the Sox are valuing him the same way as other teams that have extended their players, this goes nowhere fast. And if Devers thinks he’s a $400mill player, that will get him traded even faster.

The thing is, by next year, he just may get $400M/12, at his age.

I agree with everything there. I've said before this season ended he's not a 300 Million dollar player let alone 400 Million. But based on recent contracts I would now go 300 Million. Anything more I'd trade him.

I really don't want to think about it, but I'd say we get more, now, and we should know, soon, if we can meet his demands, or not.

If it's true, and we know how they set a player's value and hardly budge, then it's over, already.

He does have age working in his favor. But next off-season he will only be 7 months younger than Olson was when his deal was signed.

I wanted to have hope they’d extend him. But Devers called himself completely differently than how the Sox value him. Ideally both sides should budge. But I don’t know if either one will…

So, it's like Bogey redux.

Say no to $300M a few months ago, and now offer $300M, when he won't take it.

Isn't that the trap the Sox fell into with Bogey?

If the final offer to Lester was genuine, same with him. They could have had him for that offer, had they made it earlier.
