It's all academic, man. If we acquired all the guys we've been rumored to be in on, we'd have a pretty good team.

Maybe Bloom is a Nutty Professor type. That's the nickname Joe Kerrigan earned in his short and ugly stint as Sox manager. Pulling lineups out a hat and the like. Maybe Bloom is unconventional to a fault. Like, we signed Kike to be a center fielder or second baseman, but what the heck, maybe he'll be great at short! McGuire and Wong, pretty untested guys, but what the heck, maybe they'll do the job...they're plenty cheap, at least!

The prospect the Dodgers traded for Rojas wasn't even in their top 30 at the end of last summer.

Fangraphs had him as their #15 with a FV of 45. The Sox closest equivalent middle infielders had FV of 40+ and were Jeter Downs and David Hamilton. Downs was certainly on his was down the prospect ladder. Hamilton? I make that deal.

BTV - and working from memory here - gave Rojas a similar surplus value to Jarren Duran. I can see reasons why Miami does and doesn’t make that deal…

Unlike most, I don’t have any complaints about Kike’s glove anywhere he’s played. I don’t like him as a leadoff hitter, but e haven’t seen that yet this year.

I still like McGuire behind the plate, and in limited action, there’s been nothing to dislike about him at the plate, either.

The issue with Bloom isn’t the little allegedly unconverted moves. He’s had a good share of successes there. But his flaw is his frequent under commitment for vet talent. Why only all these one year deals? Why is the one pitcher he tried to go “all in” Zack Elflin?

Those short deals are part of his unconventionality. It's like he has ADD.

It’s sad because he’s done a decent job identifying guys who can pitch. Wacha maybe could have been have for a multiyear deal that didn’t break the payroll…

We complain about not adding players, but it could be worse. The Red Sox just played 2 teams with good young talent, but ownership won’t spend much money to improve.

Plus the Sox did at least extend Devers while Pirates’ star Bryan Renolds was demanding a trade (or an 8 year $134mill contract extension)…

Well as Shaughnessy would say, "Garrett Whitlock and Brayan Bello, a Nation turns its lonely eyes to you."

On the bright side, there’s a good chance they’re better than Brian Rose and Jeff Suppan. (Payback to 5Gold for stepping on my injury joke toes.)

True, but right now the hitting is suspect. And the defense stinks.

Did it? We had a hole at 2nd base and he was at the time a premium free agent on a good deal. It was an upgrade in the mold that we often desire here. The problem is it's been a s*** signing so far.

I'm fine with the Story signing IF AND ONLY IF they see him as a 2B and NOT a SS.

I can't figure out who has the burner account on this board: Henry or Bloom. Or how many accounts they have.

It's zero. I don't see anyone on here who really toes their line.

I’m not panicking yet, but getting the broom by Pittsburg at home was not a good look, and not the start the Red Sox needed, or wanted. They already were booed on opening day, and a bad road trip that they have coming up especially doing bad against TB will not be pretty when they come home. A for Sale day tomorrow, and it better be better than an open house.

I mean, unless the Bucs are an upstart team this year and make a run at the Wild Care, it's pretty damn embarrassing.

And after some of us thought Andrus might be asking for too much, he signed for $3 million.

So many things that can be questioned.

Right now I have an awful feeling this team is really gonna suck.

Andrus has a 297 OPS right now.

BUT that's not the way Bloom thinks.

I'm just disappointed that after getting swept by Ben's Bucs, 700hitter hasn't thought of any coffee jokes...

But how’s the glove?

Of course, if the Sox did sign Andrus, maybe they don’t sign Duvall and would instead be 1-5 right now.

I think that was the original plan, although the Sox seemed content with Story starting SS this year supposedly, although I suspect that was only temporary until Mayer was ready. Still I think that was their back up plan when they failed to resign Bogaerts. They may have been comfortable at SS, but I think they definitely signed him to be the full time 2nd.

If only. Both helped break an 86-year old curse!

Rose was the 1997 International League Pitcher of the Year, making rotation teammate Carl Pavano expendable -- and also desirable enough as a return in the trade for Pedro Martinez. Rose fronted a Pawtucket staff that included postseason hero Derek Lowe, the legendary Rich Garces, and Pat Mahomes (who dadded a QB).

Suppan actually played a role on the field as a member of the '04 Cardinals, when he was picked off third by first baseman Big Papi in a play that evoked the most memorable unrehearsed quote of the World Series by Jon Miller: "That's the worst baserunning of all time!"

Defensive metrics early on are wild. -1 DRS, 5.8 UZR/150, 1 OAA. Haven't watched any ChiSox games, so can't really comment.

I really liked what I saw of him at 2B. I don't like constant tinkering. I know his arm was already diminished. Why even try moving him to SS? Doesn't make sense to me.

Rose was a good pitcher until his elbow issues in 1998.

@SPChrisHatfield

Of note with the rest of the full-season affiliates starting today, Freddy Valdez, a rookie ball OF acquired from the Mets as part of the Andrew Benintendi deal, is converting to pitching.

That Beni trade is still sort of "pending" as Winckowski is starting to show signs of life.

Cordero is gone and gave us close to nothing, if not minus value.

Luis de la Rosa- Salem w so-so results in very few innings pitched- faint hopes

Grant Gambrell- I think he is out of baseball, now.

Freddy Valdez- just converted to pitching

Interesting that they are keeping this guy, but got rid of BJ Vela, a guy the same age who could actually hit (927 OPS in FCL vs Valdez' 574). Seems weird.

So THAT'S the plan to add more pitching. Keep acquiring shortstops or rightfield types with cannon arms, and just convert them...

They're stretching out Dalbec right now. First, he has to play corner OF to build up his stamina long-tossing...
