I think it was 2012, we protected Hassan and left Pressly and Fields unprotected. Both were selected and went on to do good things.

I would have protected Ward and DFA's someone on my 5 man list.

What are the chances Pressly would have developed into the force he is now if left to ferment in the Red Sox system the past decade?

Impossible to know for sure, except what we know about Boston's recent history of championship-caliber pitchers: grim and unfun.

I’d have kept Ward and Wallace and DFAd Ort and Brasier…

The guys at SPs seemed to like Politi more than Wallace.

Brasier is expected to make $2.3M on arb- time to cut ties.

Then, maybe we should just trade Bello and the rest, before they show how much our system sucks.

Ward and Wallace are at least close enough to provide value to the BOS bullpen. It's not like you are stashing Groome for another lost year or some of the other guys they have sat on for no real reason like Marcus Wilson.

The Phillies gave DD a 3 year contract extension that will take him through 2027. Good move for DD, and the Phillies.

Would you replace Bloom with Click, if it was up to you?

He'll need to find someone who can build a bullpen for him.

You mean we're just one James away from acquiring actual starting position players like Mancini and Vazquez... and legitimate bullpen depth every year?

I heard he had Anatidaephobia: the fear that somewhere, somehow, a duck is watching you.

He was fired because of the Vaz trade.

Apparently, it was the nixed Contreras trade that ruffled feathers.

Why?

The only logical explanation I can see is a conflict between him and Crane.

Word was that the higher ups asked Dusty about the trade, and he felt there would be clubhouse issues over Contreras taking a back-up role to Maldanado.

I'm not sure why that would sour Crane against Click, but that's the word, here.

It's kind of ironic that Dombrowski got a big extension, while Click basically got shown the door.

Dombrowski is being given a chance to improve. Click can only do worse next year and was pre-emotively fired before doing so…

To be clear, it didn’t look like Dusty was singling out Contreras

Reading between the lines, Baker didn’t want a pending free agent that wanted playing time to enhance his future payday. And Dusty didn’t want to fix something that wasn’t broken. Apparently he felt Vazquez would be more amenable to a backup role

He was probably right, too…

Very true, and this is also a glaring example on what some GMs value in their catchers.

Contreras is viewed as a major FA catching option, and yet he would have been the back-up to Maldonado and his .586 OPS since 2021, as was Vaz after he was traded for.

In the end, the fans will tell Henry when it is time for Bloom to go. Look at least year’s attendance— a fairly substantial drop from the last 10 years. People will not continue to fill the ballpark for a last place team. Their business model of high payroll and the highest ticket prices is not sustainable by 5 last place finishes in 7 years.

You keep saying 5 out of 7.

For one thing, it's misleading and wrong to cut our 2015-2019, and for another, our outlook to start each year was not "last place" for any of those 5 years, except 2020. Fans had enough to look forward to those other 4 years to have hopes of making the playoffs.

Sure, the discouragement of those seasons led to lost future ticket sales and NESN subscriptions, and that is likely why we ended up going over the tax line, this year, but personally, I see a lot to be optimistic about looking at 2023. I'm pumped up to watch Bello, Casas, Kelly and to some extent German, Crawford, Mata, EValdez and maybe Walter, Murphy, Crawford, Wink and our catching tandem of Wong & McGuire. I'm certain some will be disappointing, but I'm excited to see some I know will end up being plusses.

I'm also near certain Bloom is going to spend more, this winter than ever before, and likely more than 2020 and 2021 combined. That's reason for excitement and optimism.

It seems weird that some who chastised us for being all doom & gloom back in 2019, while b eing all rosy and cheerful about our future are now the ones seemingly all doom and gloomish.

The Sox don’t have 5 last place finishes in the last 7 years period.

In the last 7 years, the Sox have finished last twice, first 3 times, second once and third once…

They're strictly talking about the non DD years and ignoring the fact that DD walked into a winning team Charrintong largely built. It will be awfully ironic if Bloom builds a winner, gets fired, and some other guy comes in and takes the credit.

but remember, fans don't have the power to envision complex ideals like this. It's unfair but it's the world we live in. I don't completely disagree with the "BUCK STOPS HERE" mentality, but if you get too lost in it you might end up throwing the baby out with the bath water, which many in here would do in a heartbeat.

You can go back forever with this. Theo got a ton of credit for the teams Duquette built.

Now who’s not getting the point?

If you only count the world series winning years. 2004, 2007, 2013, and 2018 the Boston Red Sox have won 4 world series in the last 4 years.

Oh. I wasn’t getting the stupid point apparently.

The “point” was supposed to be that when the Sox have a bunch of expensive players winding down deals, the team does badly, I guess.

Simple opinion question - if DD didn’t get fired, how good would the 2020 Red Sox have been? And the 2021 Red Sox?

Well said. It’s largely about context, but results do carry some weight, even if it comes after the GM leaves.
