The players have agreed to tiny increases in the tax thresholds the last couple of CBA's.

Not even close to the cost of living or inflation indexes.

A big, one-time, increase, now, would essentially, just even things up.

Adding a 27th roster slot is a big gain. adding 2 teams would be more players, but the product is already watered down enough, IMO.

100% agree on adding more teams.

I'm all on the player's side, but I think the lower tier players are the ones that need the biggest boost.

I get the trickle down theory of the big contracts, but to me, raising the min wage, perhaps to more than $1M in 3-4 years is huge.

Lessening the arb years and years to free agency is bigger for most players.

Creating a floor on team spending would create more competition for the lower tier free agents and drive their salaries up quite a bit.

I do see an advantage of raising the lux tax line above $240M, but I think the other areas I mentioned help more players.

You are not wrong - I see it as a both/and deal, that's all.

At this stage of the game it's a matter of isolating the biggest differences in their positions and negotiating compromises. These people seem to be lousy negotiators.

I see the players making gains, but I doubt they get even what I suggested. Maybe not even close.

If the deal takes a long time to complete, a lot of veterans will find themselves out of baseball, being superseded by younger players because they will not have time to show they can still compete at the ML level. The new CBA negotiations may shorten the careers of these veteran players.

Ding Ding Ding!! We have a winner!!! Unfortunately one (or both) sides aren't yet committed to reaching an agreement.

They don't appear to be getting nervous as the delaying or shortening of the season is upon them.

And several dozen players are without jobs.

Corey Seager might not mind getting biweekly checks on his $32mill salary while he stays home and plays with the kid(s?). But Carlos Correa could wind up losing real money here…

I'm guessing around June 1. I see no current signs of a willingness to compromise on the key financial issues. It will take some financial pain to bring about that willingness. The owners can look at the full length of the CBA while the players typically have fewer years and may feel year by year pressure to settle. Since there will be a 30 day period of preseason conditioning I believe opening day will be delayed.

They have been steamrolled the last couple of go-rounds and they seem more aware of that this time. I do think they naively did not expect baseball at large to treat it as an actual hard cap.

Several dozen players will not affect the player vote all that much.

A lot of baseball players out there and other cities that likely want teams. Easiest way to inject money into the pie. Also from a pure "running the season" perspective, 32 teams creates some better playoff options.

Teams only get added when the owners lose a collusion lawsuit…

There are 2-3 teams that should move, anyway.

I get the reasons for expanding, but I hope they don't.

The meeting between MLB and MLBPA is over

It lasted 15 minutes

Screw BOTH sides. The only way these idiots would understand is if the fans went on strike, but that would never happen. Weakness personified.

Expanding rosters to 27 and adding 2 teams would add 84 MLB players to the daily MLB pool of players. Raise the minimum salary by a lot, and we're talking about a hell of a lot of players being much happier, despite anything else to do with lux tax limits, arb years and other issues seemingly front & center.

You just said yesterday that the product was already watered down, and now you want to add 2 more teams, and 2 more players per team? NO, and he’ll no. How much more watered down do you want to watch, and pay more to do it?

Is it? The watering down is really about teams not attempting to win ... the underlying model is the problem there.

The two big problems with baseball globally are:

1. Not enough balls put into play

2. Folks who run the game apparently not liking baseball

I don’t think the watering down is all about teams not trying to win? It’s not just baseball, but all sports.

It's like a mediation between two kids at school, who lack the maturity to consider the other's position, and the emotions to resolve the issue -- so they get up and walk out.

Except these kajillionaires won't even allow a guidance counselor in the room.

And we're all disgusted because we can't wait to give our money to them.

Well said, and like I have said before too is to have both sides switch sides to see what the other side sees. What does Jeter say? He’s been on both sides.

1. It will be a very chilly day in Hell before I care about Derek Jeter’s opinion on any subject.

2. He also probably doesn’t even have a say on this issue since he isn’t the majority owner of the Marlins. (Bruce Sherman is.). Jeter is just investor brought in to make it look like the team was interested in baseball for once. And to influence the GM to trade anyone good to the Yankees for a pile of dirt.)

I’m very well aware that Jeter is not the majority owner, and why wouldn’t he make trades like Stanton to the Yankees. They would be the only team stupid enough to take on that contract.

Maybe Jetes will finally admit that Knoblach didn't come within three feet of tagging out Offerman in the '99 playoffs; there's gotta be footage on a Jeter Cam tape stored somewhere in his wine cellar...

@MikeSilvermanBB

Plan for talks between owners/ MLB and locked-out players to intensify next week.

MLB wants deal by Feb. 28, or very soon after, or else regular season will be delayed.

Ben Nicholson-Smith reported on Thursday evening that the Players Association left the league with an ultimatum to ponder: if the players do not get to play a full 162-game season with 100 percent of their salaries paid, they will not agree to an expanded postseason for the 2022 season. The players have agreed, conceptually, to an expanded postseason, but clearly, the specifics to this point do not include a guarantee of one occurring in 2022.
