G.Cole(RH) 15-8 3.03ERA vs N.Eovaldi(RH) 10-8 3.58ERA

Biggest series of the season for both teams. May the better team win.

Go SOX!

Good OP. Well said.

Just win tonight's game to send the message that NYY can't stick with us. Fade like the sunset. Oh and do NOT let Brett Gardner beat you in the 9th inning.

Finally the schedule is trued up and with 9 games to go, RedSox have recovered the August swoon to be 2 up on NY, 3 on Blue Jays and 4 on Seattle. Oakland is on mathematical life support. I think the Sox could go 5-4 and be one of the WCs , 6-3 would be WC1, playing one game at Fenway to get into the ALDS.

How many one game playoffs and WS #7's have we seen over the last 50 years that make you wonder about home field advantage ?

This is also one of the biggest and oldest rivalries in sports. For huge parts of the 86 year drought, it was pretty one-sided, but, with the arrival of John Henry, its definitely two-sided. Indeed, with JH at the helm for 19 years, the Sox have 4 titles to the Yankees 1.

This year was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Sox, with Chaim Bloom tasked with building a competitive team without necessarily simply buying one as DD did. I'm anti-Dombrowski, but that doesn't keep me from enjoying the arguments in his defense. The 2018 Sox, for which DD gets a lot of credit, were the best Sox team in their 121 year history.

This season has been ridiculously improbable. The Sox lost their first three to the moribund Orioles, foretelling an epically terrible season. But the 9 game winning streak allowed the Sox to charge to the front and hold on to the AL East lead into July. Then came the July and August losing streaks and the Rays re-establishing themselves as the best team in the AL East, as well as the AL, just as they were last year.

The Yankees, expected to be solid this year, were anything but and sank in the standings to 3d and even 4th in the AL East. Then came the August 1 Yankees, followed by a 13 game winning streak to overtake the Sox, followed by a sagging September, and--surprise, surprise--a 7 game winning streak by the Sox.

Neither team is likely to catch the Rays and both are reduced to scrambling for one of two wild card slots while fighting off the Jays, Mariners, and even the A's.

Plus, getting to and even winning the wild card game means facing the Rays, the best team in the AL.

Still, just as splendidsplitter says, this is a huge series--in autumn, yet. Ain't it grand?

How is it that so many of these games come down to a situation with Gardner holding a bat.

SPLENDIDSPLINTER = Ted Williams

SPLENDIDSPLITTER = Koji Uehara

Great post. What could be better drama: a final Sox-Yanks September series that could make or break either club.

I just need to help you correct one line: "The Yankees, expected to be DOMINANT -- a 100+ win runaway pennant train this year -- were anything but..."

Both NY and Boston sport competitive albeit flawed nines, so no doubt FOX is planning on showing Garrett Whitlock videos during every commercial to promote the series. Right now young Boston fans are practicing chants and making banners to mock New York: "RULE 5 DRAFT!" Hopefully, GW will be well-healed in time to star in the Wild Card game.

What, you thought all the networks would just show replays of '04 ARod slapping the ball out of Bronson Arroyo's glove, then holding his arms up to the cameras like a Little Leaguer who got caught cheating? I know, that's all they ever show... along with Ortiz walkoffs, Roberts stealing, Schilling's bloody sock, Damon and Bellhorn homers, Tony Clark striking out, the grounder to Pokey Reese (last out of the ALCS), Mueller's single between Rivera's legs, and of course, Fenway's standing O for a smiling Mariano in '05.

That unexplainable Seattle team just won't disappear.

What's happening this year in the AL East will probably continue to happen over the next many years. Four well-run organizations that will do what it takes to win. Just expect more of these pressure cooker games in late September for the ongoing future.

I don’t like Schwaber at 1B.

I sure like his bat, though. In fact, I like all these bats and I like the rest of the infield's fielding as well as the outfield's.

I made a big deal about Plawecki catching Eovalid this month, but I am also fine with Vazquez catching this big game.

I'm watching this game on the PRIME app.

Bad new is they're employing the Yankems' feed.

Good news is the picture is better on the app than on my cable.

What the heck is the prime app?
