I don't miss Betts and his salary one bit.....don't let the door hit you in the ass is my stance to all that leave us.

I can't say that I feel this way about all players that leave us, but it certainly applies to Betts.

I don't fault any player for leaving Boston for more money elsewhere. Why shouldn't they ?

Because it shouldn't be all about the money.

"If I was his mom, I'd tell him to take the deal."

That poster would be wrong because Betts' mom was right to wait it out.

If I were Betts' mom, I would still tell him to take the deal.

Why not? Do you think the owners are in this as a public service?

It's a business for most. And most fans, if you can judge by those who post here, are totally heartless. "Player X is a bum." "Player X is ridiculously overpaid." "Cut Player X." "Trade Player X." "Don't re-sign Player X."

You are not a typical fan. I mean that in a good way.

Loyalty has to go both ways for it to matter. Some folks want it one way.

It seems pretty clear that Mookie preferred LA to Boston. The money he got from them was not even that much more than the Red Sox offer. There was the pandemic factor, but after all the time he waited to get to free agency, was that really such a big deal to him?

I understand that baseball is a business. I don't like it though. I know it won't happen, but I'd love to see other considerations take priority over money. It's not like any of these people are going to struggle to make ends meet. IMO, players and owners should show a little more loyalty to each other and to the fans.

Some players and even owners actually grow up as baseball fans and understand the connection. Others are just successful businessmen or great athletes who know little about sports history, mainly because they were busy making money or playing every sport instead of watching them (or horrors, reading about them). Those guys -- who often have options about which sport to pursue as a career -- may be in it for more personal rewards...

But as I was saying, the fans don't really have any loyalty to the players either. It's all about the laundry and which GM is doing the best job moving the pieces and keeping the payroll under control.

It could be done. Players and owners could suddenly agree to take less. Front row tix could go for $10. And at that point, since there would be no prestige to sitting there, corporations and celebrities would no longer buy up all the good seats. You could walk to the park, just like in the sixties, and buy any ticket you want. And every fan in NE with $100, all 500,000 of them, would drive their kids every weekend to Fenway, eat hot dogs, drink beer, and walk back to their car parked a block away on the street or in a two-dollar lot ... There would be no poverty. No disease. We would all wear Fedoras. And the G*P would vanish from the earth.

Why should be players be loyal to fans, Kimmi? Fans are the first to want them gone when they're not performing. Fans are only loyal as long as the player is consistently delivering.

Boston is not for everyone. I can't ever fault a player leaving for more money and to the beautiful climate of LA. That's part of baseball lore, play outdoors under beautiful, warm skies inside a picture perfect stadium. But I don't have to like it.

Just read our game threads, and we’d have no players left on a roster about to shock the baseball world by making the playoffs.

Yeah, it's brutal. But so predictable.

I guess I should stop feeling surprised.

I realize much of it is just heat of the moment lashing out in anger and frustration, but several posters double down when confronted with questions and comments about what they are actually suggesting be done.

He’ll, one guy, and I won’t name names, but seriously, he has at least one time over this season called for the DFAing of half the 40 man roster, the trading away of nearly the rest of the 20 remaining players, along with Bloom, Cora and maybe even the ball boys.

Maybe my feelings on what a fan should be is old-fashioned or unrealistic, and I’m not saying we should blindly support every member of our team and never be critical, but it just seems like the anger and frustration some posters express borderlines or crosses the border into outright hatred territory.

It’s venomous. It’s relentless. It’s extreme.

To me, it’s hatred.

A large segment of "sports fans" are selfish, miserable, hateful pricks. They only love the team when it's winning.

At least baseball players who mess up don't get killed the way soccer players do, I guess...

They would, if they were right in front of some of these "fans" at certain times.

Come on. You've done your share of it , and then some ,over the years .

I have, but I rarely make definitive judgements on players based on one play or one game.

I might call for the DFA of 3-5 players, not 30-35.

I was actually the last guy to say Valentine needed to go. (not bragging about this.)

Maybe he was referring to The Gap. While I will admit, their clothes do fit just about anyone’s budget, I’d still agree with him there…

It is ironic that many fans call for a total rebuild if the team misses the postseason by one game. Do these people have any idea how long a total rebuild can take and how infrequently they are successful?

It's not ironic, it's just stupid and ignorant LOL

While many players added to the 40 man roster were in our system before 2019, only 9 player remain on the 40 from the 2018 team, and two of those players (Eovaldi and Brasier) were added mid season 2018. (Duran was drafted in 2018 and added in 2021.)

Vaz, Bogey, Barnes, ERod, Sale, Devers & JD have the highest 40 man roster seniority.

One could argue, we've just seen a near total rebuild.

Players on the 40 man roster not even in the Sox system in Oct of 2018:

Arauz

Perez

Plawecki

Verdugo

Valdez

Pivetta

Arroyo

Wong

Seabold

Rosario

Potts

Whitlock

Renfroe

Ottavino

Kike

Richards

Cordero

Sawamura

Santana

Schwarber

Robles

Davis

Shaw

Munoz

Iggy

That's 25 new players in 2+ years. If you count Eovaldi, Brasier and Duran as mid 2018 additions, we have 28 out of 40 players not in the Sox organization before June 2018.

A total rebuild when having 2 better starters in your rotation would make you a WS contender. People are crazy.

Of these players, the only real keepers are:

Verdugo

Kiké

Renfroe

Whitlock

Schwarber

The rest you can throw back in the pond and it won't affect the team.

Exactly. We are so close to being a top contender, and we should have the budget space, this winter to fill our 3-4 highest need areas:

SP

SP/RP (depending on where Houck and Whitlock will be)

RP

IF utility

Of course, this means they'll just sign two low end SPs, a reliever and 3 UTIL guys.
