Think Strahm is that high on the list just weeks after signing an MLB deal for $3mill?

I think it just shows there's less chaff at the bottom of the 40 man roster this year. Seems to be more depth.

Our 5 starters will get a day off after their first start- Eovaldi, after his first 2 starts, then it's 18 games in 18 days. Maybe we throw in a pen game or two in that stretch.

Apparently, we are stretching our Whitlock and others for multiple inning roles, so it's doable.

Why do a “pen game” when there are 2 extra roster spots early in the season? Call up Crawford or Groome or someone to pitch…

DFA candidates to me are, in whatever order

Arauz, Davis, Tyler, Valdez, Bazardo and maybe R Hernandez

You guys are sick LOL

Agree, and with xtra players on the roster until May 2nd, which should be pitchers there should be enough starters to go around not to have to use openers. Of course with a shortened ST pitching all pitching may be more inconsistent the first month, or so.

The shortened spring are clearly the reasons for not only the expanded roster, but also the “ghost runner.”

Now does the use of a ghost runner up the appeal of Duran or Billy Hamilton? Bearing in mind that using them that way means removing the player who made the last out the previous inning from the game…

Apparently a lot of people really like the ghost runner as a permanent fixture.

Pardon my impertinence for ignoring the unwritten rules about minor leaguers experiencing proper developmental paths, but I'm making a prediction: somewhere in the bigs in the first month of the season, some young pitcher, barely in the pros a few years, will get added to the 28, throw a gem, and become a surprise member of an MLB rotation.

Not trying to be snarky, but can you think of examples of that kind of surprise in recent seasons?

Not in the first month, but it happens often in the second half, usually with also-rans or tankers. I just have a feeling with the long lockout, fast ST, expanded rosters and inevitable injuries (and cold weather; good thing Boston didn't recruit any old, brittle arms)...

ps. wait, what am I thinking -- it's the 25th century! It won't be a starter, but a bulk guy who becomes a set-up man.

At the end of the year, yes. Houck.

Not quite a match for 5GG's prediction.

As you know we are very strict here with rulings.

Also had 44 appearances over 3 seasons prior to 2021.

Akil Baddoo? Or does he not count since he isn't a pitcher?

Answered your own question.

With the exception of Story not in there, Red Sox probably have opening day lineup playing today vs. the Twins. Nate really sharp with 4 no-hit innings.

This seems to be the goal nowadays for a large market club. Never truly go for it but always be in the picture. This maximizes revenue without breaking the bank

Forbes reports that the Red Sox had an operating income of $69 million last year while the New York Yankees took an operating loss of $40 million:

Texas had income of almost $100 mill. The Mets had a loss of almost $100 mill.

Pretty wild disparities.

It's why I think the "operating income" line maybe excludes tv deals and such.

Who the hell knows? The finances of baseball are one of the world's great enigmas.

More mysterious than the NFL’s QBR, a stat that baffles both mathematicians and treasure hunters alike as they search for its meaning and (very well ) hidden value…

I watched this video in grad school 15 years ago. The first 70 seconds is just *chef's kiss*. It's really z best video on fraud that I've ever seen.

They say your conduct may be fraudulent

and they need a closer look.

They're alleging personal enrichment.

They say that you've been cooking the books.

Yup, and there are satellite companies owned by team owners that make tons of money off the team. (Like ownership in the cable company showing the games, concessions and memorabilia, etc...)

Right. These teams aren't really losing money. Some may make more than others, but I don't think any of these teams are losing money on a frequent basis if at all.

If they were losing money, every year, they wouldn't be selling them at enormous profits.

I know this is not always true or a real bell weather, but the money these guys make when the decide to cash it all in, is usually incredible.

And some of those satellite companies actually own satellites.
