Yes, trading Nomar was the end of Sox Nation as we knew it.

True, but nothing was worse than seeing Dwight Evans in an Oriole uniform…

Tiant & Boggs in a Yankee uniform was just as bad.

Team hovered around .500 and kept finishing near (but never at) the bottom of the AL East, but we did see a brighter future coming up with young players like Hurst, Clemens and Boggs…

And Oil Can! Don't kick the Can... though he turned out to be our Dwight Badden.

Tiant got an endorsement for Yankee Franks. In the commercial, he would say, “It’s great to be with a wiener” as he took a bit of the frankfurter. Every time I saw that commercial, I was very sad.

The bloom was off the rose long before he left Boston.

I’ll agree with that, but Damon at the time was tough to see as a Yankee too especially what he helped do to the Yankees in 04.

I was not upset Damon left. We had a CF'er. It sucked he did rather well with them.

Not to mention his pit stop in Toronto in between Boston and New York…

Exactly. If Damon stayed, where was he going to play?

Detroit. Remember, this was a guy who later refused to return to Boston when the Sox tried to reacquire him for a pennant race; instead, he chose to stay with the Tigers, who were going nowhere. Damon is not my friend.

Coco Crisp?

YES! (I think Kapler was his back-up.)

In 2007 & 2008, it was Crisp and Ellsbury.

In 2009, it was Ellsbury

We had Manny in LF and JD Drew in RF. Papi at DH.

I did not miss ole noodle-arm Damon, too much.

Damon fWAR:

2006 3.6

2007 2.4

2008 3.8

2009 3.6

Total 13.4

BOS CF fWAR:

2006 0.7

2007 5.6

2008 5.9

2009 2.3

Total 14.5

The initial returns were not ideal. It's easier to ignore 2006 knowing what we know now.

True, but at the time, I felt it was best to not pay Damon what he got.

Also, I think Damon's numbers from 2006-2009 were helped by playing in Yankee Stadium half his games.

All-in-all, I think we made the right choice.

In fact, I think the vast majority of our choices to let free agents walk worked out well- then add the comp picks we gained from losing them, and we did great.

Home/Away WRC+

2006 104/131

2007 103/98

2008 129/122

2009 135/109 (new Yankee Stadium)

If you look at the entire stretch, I'm not sure playing in NY made a big difference. He had a career 93+ at old Yankee Stadium vs 106 at Kauffman, 109 at Fenway and 119 at Comerica.

Damon was a good player. Letting him go was kind of a wash. Didn't help much, didn't hurt much. We won a ring without him and he won one with the Yanks.

I'll always have good feelings for Damon for his performance in ALCS Game 7 in 2004. And in Yankee Stadium no less.

Damon might have had a noodle arm, but he was a big part of the 2004 team, and hit that big slammy against the Yankees at the stadium.

He also rounded third …. And ran all the way to New York!!

Boggs and Clemens riding horses. Vomit.

What made it worse was winning a championship in NY when they couldn’t do it in Boston. They had chances too.

I stand corrected.

I just remember all those short porch HRs!

Indeed, he was.

I have no hard feelings about him, but I really felt it was the right thing not to outbid the Yanks.

That play where Manny cut off his throw really highlighted the "NOODLE" arm.

The Red Sox did the right thing not to spend much to resign him but I just wish he would have gone to any other team than the Yankees. His arm was soft noodle at that.

Agreed, but seeing Tiant and then Boggs in pinstripes hurt me more.
