No Yankees look punchless at both sides of the plate.

They also just lost Cole. Kluber can’t go deep. Taillon turned into a pumpkin and is out, and don’t let me start with the offense.

IMO they are done. BOS and TOR/SEA will play the WC game.

So the Blue Jays are playing the Orioles, the Yankees are playing the Mets, and the Red Sox have the toughest challenge against the White Sox. This would be a good weekend for the Red Sox to just maintain the slight lead they have in the Wild Card. That would be a win.

Does anyone take the Mariners seriously? i don't. I see three teams--Red Sox, Yankees, and Blue Jays--fighting for two spots.

edit: I forgot about the Oakland A's.

The A's play the Rangers this weekend; the Mariners play the Diamondbacks. Thus, again, the Red Sox have the hardest schedule over the next 3 days.

The Yankees are in the worst shape of anyone right now. Half their pitching staff is out of action.

Yanks hit a couple solo blasts in the 9th but lost, AGAIN!

Yanks had a crazy winning streak where everything went right.

But the Gods of Baseball Parity have stepped in now and they are leveling things out...

Now we're waiting for the GBP to cool off the Jays, but maybe they get a pass after being forced to be nomads half the season.

The Mariners are fine. Could they get into the WC game? Sure. I think all of the teams mentioned (Sox, Yanks, Jays, A's, M's) all have good upside, but all the parts aren't quite there yet. None of them are far ahead of the others.

The Jays have by far the best run differential of all the Wild Card contenders.

Also, they have actually allowed fewer runs than the Rays.

Ok, but I don't think run differential is the end all be all. I imagine that a high octane offense like the Jays would feast on bad pitching, but struggle against good pitching. This can turn around once the younger guys mature a little bit. I think they'll be much better in the following years, especially if they dump their sack of potatoes coach.

The Jays sure are hot right now. 3 game sweep of A's followed by 4 game sweep in the Stadium in which the Yankees did not have a single lead...

The beef has always been about their pitching, but allowing less runs than the Rays is surprising.

I know, right? As the young folk say.

Yes, and we've seen other teams in this race go on a similar run. You are never as good as you are during a winning streak or as bad as you are during a losing streak.

They are helped by never having to face Vlad Jr…

And the Rays rotation has not yet had the good fortune of facing the Joey Gallo led Yankees.

Today:

Sox - 77% chance to make the postseason

Yanks - 57% (were about 90% 2 weeks ago)

There's a good chance those chances will change again soon. But let's talk; if the Sox go .500 the rest of the month and finish with 90 Ws, are they in?

He was going to get it anyway because of Pivetta.

Does Espinal get another chance after his nice AAA game the other night?

Or, do we use the day off to not give our starters an extra day's rest?

(We do have next THUR off and then MON & THUR the following week.)

The current expectation is that Seabold will start and Pivetta should return this weekend.

I have never been more sure that both the sox and yanks are gonna miss the POs than I am right now. Our issue this week with the Jays was not the pitching. Mind you, it wasnt great, but it wasn't horrendous when you've got Romano, Heaney and Kriske allowing tack on runs late. Our hitting approach sucks. It is K or HR and when you face a team that keeps the ball down and throws a lot of sinkers, you lose. Period. Yankees do well vs power pitchers who like the ball up or junkballers who cannot keep the ball down. Go up against a Berrios who pounds the lower half and they're done. Ryu, who kept everything down, cannot touch him. Matz and the other bum? No excuse.

I brought this up yesterday. There is definitely a non zero chance that both teams miss the playoffs.

Last 2 series of season:

BOS: 3@BAL, 3@WSH

NYY: 3@TOR, 3TBR

TOR: NYY 3/ BAL 3

SEA: OAK, LAA

OAK: 3@SEA, 3@HOU

Next to last games:

BOS: 3@CWS, 3@SEA, 3BAL, 2NYM, 3NYY

NYY: 3@NYM, 1MIN, 3@BAL, 3CLE, 3TEX, 3@BOS

TOR: 4@BAL, 3TBR, 3MIN, 3@TBR, 4@MIN

SEA: 3ARI, 3BOS, 3@KCR, 4@OAK, 3@LAA

OAK: 3TEX, 3@KCR, 3@LAA, 4SEA, 3HOU

Once we get past these next 6 games, our schedule is the easiest.

With 3 games left between the two eternal rivals, one or the pother can piss on the remaining embers of a season that has not played out to form (rosters on paper). The D Covid has thrown the last spitball against all of them, furthering the frustration. Depth has become everything.
