I wonder whether people go negative just to never be overly disappointed.

I seriously think that's a big part of it.

I am disappointed quite a bit, but I'm okay with that. LOL

As George Will famously said, "the beauty of being a pessimist is you're constantly either proven right or pleasantly surprised."

Exactly. It's a win-win, in a warped sort of way. LOL

I would always tell my students: "Listen. People are a-holes. Deal with it. Me? Because I know what sh*ts humans are, I am never disappointed in them."

Incorrect post.

It's mvp's philosophy that these are 'play-in' games and you're not in the playoffs unless you win them.

He might be incorrect technically, but he's entitled to look at them that way, no?

Of course, but I think the WC game is the "post season," so it is making the playoffs, where as a tie- breaker is game 163 of the season.

Do these stats count towards the regular season or post season? I think the answer to this tells it all. (just my opinion)

I know what the technical rules are and I'm sure mvp does too.

MLB keeps shoving new "innovations" down our throats all the time. It doesn't mean we have to respect them. As fans we can have a little latitude on how we think, no?

I agreed, when I said, “of course,” then I gave my opinion.

Put it this way, 'play-in' games have become part of sports terminology.

And these Wild Card games sure have all the earmarks of 'play-in' games.

You're not in unless you win.

Moon's question is on stats: I believe the WC is considered 'post-season', but tie-breaker games or play-ins are considered statistically as regular season, giving a season with 163 games.

Yes, that's all correct.

True, but you're not "in" the Championship series, unless you win, as well.

The difference is the one game format vs the series format, and one game has connotations of tie-breaker games, like the one in 1978.

I'm fine with people viewing the game anyway they wish. I see it as making the playoffs, but our "first round" is a one-gamer.

Topps Now just issued 10-card team sets for all the clubs still alive. The add for the Red Sox set says "Postseason 10 Card Team Set"

Here is the link with a pic of the sample card of Bobby Dalbec -- it says Postseason right on his card!

1) I don't think anyone is doubting the game is officially called the "post season."

2) Some are saying they don't view the game as being the "Playoffs" but rather similar to a "tie-breaker" play-in game that used to be game 163 of the regular season.

3) Some may be making a distinction between "post season" and "playoffs." (not sure on this one)

Today is Aaron Boone's last day as Yankee manager.

A sad day for Sox fans, but at least we could be part of that celebration.

It's post-season.

The tiebreaker game 163 is, by rule, regular season. Any statitstics that occur in those tiebreaker games count towards the regualr season stats, and the win counts towards the regular season record of the teams. The 1978 Red Sox finished the regular season with a record of 99-64, and the Yankees were 100-63 that year. In both cases, those records do not add up to 162 games. In contrast, the 2019 WS Champ Nationals finished the regular season 93-69 for a total of 162 regular season games, Their victory over the Brewers in the Wild Card game did not change that record. And winning pticher Stephen Strasburg's record was listed as 1-0 in the box score, with the game not impacting his 18-6 regular season record...

I know what the official answer is, but I'm okay with people not viewing this game as part of the "playoffs," even though it is.

I said we were going to win the division and we didn't. They way underperformed in the second half but still won the top WC.

I also said this team would make the WS vs SFG. If somehow the stars align and everybody in our team play at their potential or close to it, it is still possible. Also pressure is not on this team but on others this time and it is a good handicap. They are the underdogs this time —like in 2018.

Are you also ok with people referring to a tomato as a vegetable?

There is no beauty in losing. It is disappointing for pessimists too. George Will is an irrelevant fool.

No.

Losing may be upsetting to pessimists. But by definition it isn’t disappointing…

Correct. Losing is not a beauty by any means.

It is going to be a close game but I think we will win compadre.

Stupid distinction. And it is disappointing... just not unexpected.

George Will gets sent to the wall when the revolutionaries come for Red Sox Nation.
