I don't doubt it, but my point has always been (well, after the dreadline) that Bloom and the Sox didn't have to mess around experimenting, when there were legitimate first basemen available, like Rizzo, Cron, Schoop, and maybe Santana.

Schoop is also playing first base for the first time this season.

Cron is out and Rizzo went to the Yankees, in case you missed it…

The trade deadline is in the past now and the team needs to decide on a path forward. Schwaber will be tried at first and if he can handle it, will take the majority of play there. If not, then we have Dalbec as a backup. Casas may get a brief look in Sept., but it won't be for many games.

Mid 2022

Maybe.

That he hasn’t exactly dazzled in AA is not expediting his timeline. That he is young for that level, however, is encouraging…

Keep in mind September rosters are fixed at 28, no more, no less. I assume you can send people up and down but you have to have 28. The days of virtually unlimited call ups are over.

That’s a good thing. Ours a practice MLB should have ended years ago. Next step is to end the practice properly…

Swiharts Ghost is going to take a vacation. If he comes back and continues this stupid ass trolling/spamming it’ll become permanent. Only reason this didn’t happen sooner is I’ve been extremely busy and haven’t been checking in too often and all other mods are MIA.

Busy, but I kept checking the box & seeing Dalbec with a few more RBI's. I knew he was hot, but didn't realize this hot.

Hope he has at least turned a corner after the trade deadline? Good for him!

The corner he turned may well have been Baltimore pitching. Lets see how he fares against the Yankees.

Agreed.

Well as I said earlier, he did have two good series against Tampa and Toronto…

I hope he can keep his strikeout rate down. He has power but has to make contact against good pitching.

1343 OPS TBR/TOR stretch

1750 OPS BAL

1153 OPS since TBR series on 7/30. Maybe the fruit basket should go to Tampa?

Fun with numbers...

Dalbec is at ...

.957 since July 21st (last game at TOR)

.832 since July 9th (first game vs PHI)

.827 since June 28th (first game vs KCR)

.812 since June 15th- 2 months!

.809 since June 5th.

You have to go back to June 3rd to get a sample size below .800 with Dalbec.

We can't pretend he's been good since the start of June. In this SSS, the current hot streak is masking his bad July.

Does an amazingly hot 2 week stretch make up for a dismal July?

No. My only hope is that the work they've presumably been doing with him on approach will ultimately pay off.

It doesn’t make up for it, but it does even it out.

His OPS since July 1 is .772, a bit ahead of his .717 season…

But, it's .809 since June 5th- an even bigger sample size!

Has someone ever done a study that proves consistent hitting wins more games than streaky hitting?

I would think it all evens out.

Someone going 1 for 4 with a BB every game (.250 batter, .400 OBP) would create the same amount of runs as someone who goes 0-5 every other game and 2-3 with 2 BB every other game- or every other week...

It's nice to have a streaky hitter when others are struggling. It's not so much help when the whole team is on fire and winning 20-8 and 16-2.

This isn't meant to prove anything, but let's look at 2 of JBJ's most streaky seasons: 2015 and 2016. I honestly don't know the results before looking them up, just now...

2015

.384 OPS in his first 21 games (May10-Aug 5.) We went 15-6 in those games.

1.361 OPS in his next 28 games (8/6 to 9/7). Team 16-12.

.510 the next 25 games to end the season. Team 13-12.

2016:

.679 in first 21 games. Team 11-10.

1.245 in next 29 games. Team 19-10

.799 next 53 games. Team 29-24

,703 in last 53 games. Team 32-21

I can't make heads or toes about anything, here.

The guy can swat the baseball when he connects, I must say.

You can't teach power, but you can teach/improve pitch selection. That's why I think there's a lot of untapped potential in the kid.

Well said, and there's one other thing:

.362 OBP in minors

.297 OBP in majors

Can that be improved?

I mean it takes time to correctly identify and handle MLB pitching, and it's usually harder for swing-and-miss guys to get their bearings at the MLB level. And it makes sense, since they don't slap pitches around, but try to put hittable pitches into orbit.

I’m dubious that he can keep it up since he doesn’t have a great walk rate. High K/Low BB is not a great combo.

Sandwiched in there is a .540 OPS for the month of July. Bobby went on a tear in the middle of June. Then he’s had one good week against bad pitching.

I like Bobby, but I don’t think he’s completely turned the corner yet. He’s very streaky, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he slumps horribly for the rest of August.

Hope Schwarber still has his 1B mitt ready.

Bobby Dee does have much more to work on. My hope was he could improve his swing selection and take more walks, but I'm not sure if that's the issue.

A sub .300 OBP is something a player needs a lot of power and better BA to outweigh it.

The only thing I can say is that even though he is very old for a rookie, he only has 420 PAs in the bigs. He needs time to work through some of these things out, and maybe he never does. The issue might be that a winning team, sometimes can't have the patience to give players a long enough chance to show they belong.

That pressure can also hurt a player- knowing there's a time limit.

He can’t keep it up. No one can.

But if he can OPS .800 the rest of the way, he’ll be fine…
