Would you trade Duran for Berrios?

Berrios is the best name available who is not a rental, as he is controlled for 2023. But his price tag is probably also a lot higher than it will be for the rental Scherzer..

I'm embarrassed but I have no idea who Berrios is.

My feeling for Casas and Downs have dipped, this year, but I am not for trading our top 7-8 guys for any rental.

I'm not as high on some of them as you.

I would not deal Casas or Duran for a rental. I might move Downs for the right rental. I would be more hesitant with Seabold than Downs, but only because Seabold is so close to MLB.

Jimenez, Bello, Ramirez and Yorke are all in play, however.

The Sox could probably get a worthwhile rental like Schoop for an inconsequential minor leaguer. But for an impact player, they will have to give to get...

I'm working from a perspective of payroll budget of $230M. Penalty of 42.5% in third year costs us $8.5M, which to me is insignificant for the Sox ownership. Hopefully we'll be drafting post 25th in future years so not sure I'm going to get too excited about losing draft pick. This is where Bloom excels I think, finding little nuggets.

For Scherzer, it's beginning look like a non rental.

But for how many years do you extend a 37yo pitcher with 2500 career IP?

2 + some sort of fancy option for a third might be good.

Berrios has 1.3 years of control. (I thought it was longer.)

He has a 3.76 ERA over the last 5 years. (116 ERA+)

9.1 K/9

2.7 BB/9

3.48, this year/ 1.044 WHIP (.641 OPS Against)

When he first came up, he was touted as the next generational pitcher. He's been very good, but he's not the level people projected him at.

He's been so good for so long. I guess you could get him to age 40? Sometimes these guys just fall of a cliff though.

Cherry-picking for Whitlock:

In his last 19 appearances, covering 29.1 innings, he has allowed 2 earned runs, for an ERA of 0.61.

It's not cherry picking. Kid is a stud and arguably the greatest pick up by Bloom thus far.

I’d prefer An older pitcher for 2-3 years than redoing a Price type deal.

We could just wait until winter and sign Greinke, Verlander or Scherzer.

Sure, but you are probably not going to be in this position next year. TB, NY and specially TOR will be likely tougher.

IMO what you are saying makes a lot of sense but maybe JH wants to win it all now given the circumstances.

Said that, it will be very interesting how JH and CB execute in the next hours.

IMO, we should be much better, next year, especially if we go over the tax line by a lot.

Is that what Nolan Ryan did?

The main problem with Price type deals is often the last 2-3 years. So the preference is to not bother with the good productive years and skip right to the questionable ones?

Heretic! Next, you'll be saying Cal Ripken's head grew from the time he was a rookie through his later Iron Man armors. Hey, wait a minute...

No, that was Barry Bonds.

I would put Verlander and Greinke in that category, but Scherzer seems like a reasonable bet.

True but it won't be $32M x 3, either.

Verlander and Greinke might just get 1-2 years not 3.

@drewsilv

Assuming that's it, Max Scherzer finishes his seven-year run in Washington with a 2.80 ERA and 1,610 strikeouts in 1,229 regular-season innings. Fully worth the $191.4 million.

John Henry hurt the Sox by dicking around that offseason with the "no pitchers over 30" ********.

Scherzer is one of the very few pitchers over 35 yo I'd land tagged with high avv salary for the next 3 years, and knowing that probably the 3rd year won't look that good.
