My guess is Bloom had identified the most likely players not to make next year's 40 man roster, including Rule 5 eligible players likely needing to be protected.

Looking at 2022's roster:

Free Agents (may extend or re-sign one or some):

ERod

Ottavino

Marwin

Santana

Workman

Team Options

Andriese- likely bye-bye

Richards- likely bye-bye

Perez- likely keep

Vaz- keep

Opt out?

JD Martinez

Borderline keep, Traded or DFA'd?

Brice

Chavis

Arauz

Potts

Wilson

Rios

Groome

Rosario

Plawecki or Wong?

That's a lot of slots opening up or potentially opening up.

I see about 12-15 of these guys gone, so maybe we trade some of them, before we lose them for nothing- assuming the ones I'm talking about have trade value.

If we add 4-6 free agents, we might be down to 6-10 slots for Rule 5 and borderline players listed above.

Rule 5:

Jecorrah Arnold

Brayan Bello

Cole Brannen

Gary Calvo

Marco Cardoso

Pedro Castellanos

Felix Cepeda

Kole Cottam

Kutter Crawford

Ricardo Cubillan

Osvaldo De La Rosa

Tyler Dearden

Jonathan Diaz

Danny Diaz

Jeter Downs

Jarren Duran- Already added

Tyler Esplin

Durbin Feltman

Ryan Fernandez

Ryan Fitzgerald

Antoni Flores

Frank German

Rio Gomez

Devlin Granberg

Gilberto Jimenez

Jose Larez

Dominic LoBrutto

Bryan Lucas

Charlie Madden

Alan Marrero

Elih Marrero

Joan Martinez

Alexander Montero

Oddanier Mosqueda

Brendan Nail

Brett Netzer

Tanner Nishioka

Kaleb Ort

Yusniel Padron-Artiles

Aaron Perry

Antonio Police

AJ Politi

Ceddanne Rafaela

Oscar Rangel

Tyreque Reed

Jesus Rosillo

Yasel Santana

Zach Schellinger

Alex Scherff

John Schreiber

Gregori Segovia

Chase Shugart

Miguel Suero

Jake Thompson

Thaddeus Ward

Grant Williams

Josh Winckowski

Bloom will not protect all the bolded players, so maybe he trades 1 or 2 of those he feel might be drafted.

Winckowski

Ward

Jimenez

Downs

Bello

Who would you list as borderline or surprise players?

Dearden?

Scherff?

Ward? (I'm not sure a team would grab him in the draft due to his injury, lots of players to squeeze in so maybe the Sox take that chance.)

Maybe I'm too high on T Reed, German and Ort.

Could be I'd love to see one succeed and further stick it to the Yanks.

Reed is older and still in A ball. Also went through Rule V process last year. Ort is old and has command issues. German has a 831 OPSa this year.

Are Duran and Houck an infusion or a transfusion? An infusion is the process of creating a new substance, while a transfusion is the addition of one substance to another, without creating something new.

Scribes tend to use "infusion" when a team adds new players (especially young prospects) to the roster. Transfusions are often life-savers for victims of accidents or patients in the OR (like war casualties).

Infusion also means "the introduction of a new element or quality into something".

It also means “a drink, remedy or extract prepared by soaking leaves or herbs in liquid”…

Words are more versatile than they're sometimes given credit for.

Per MLB.com, Power Rankings

4) White Sox (7)

The White Sox sweeping the season series over the Orioles in the first-half finale was an indication of how this season has gone for them so far -- Chicago has won 26 of 31 games against the four teams with the worst records in the AL: the Orioles, Rangers, Royals and Twins. Against everyone else, they’re 28-30. And the second-half schedule is favorable for the South Siders: they have the fifth-easiest remaining schedule in the AL, behind only the Rays, Tigers, Royals and Astros.

We're 32-24 vs +.500 teams. Not sure why we're ranked behind a team with 28-30 vs .500 teams.

We're #5. It doesn't make sense.

Not a big deal.

That s*** is pointless.

I haven't seen anything on Chris Sale's rehab assignments but he maybe back by August 1st assuming no physical set backs.

We need to tread water for next couple of weeks, not going deep dive against AL East foes.

Our pitching scares me a little.

You are. With practice, I'm sure you could produce the drivel that Shaunessy and whoever else puts out.

So what do I complain about?

Kike seems to be filling in nicely leading off.

I don't have to see Santana on lineup card as often.

Marwin's playing time is limited with Arroyo coming back.

Whitlock is being used in higher leverage situations.

Josh Taylor got his bad outing out of the way so he can go on another streak.

Godfather said to Johnny Fontane...."You're going to act like a man. What's the matter with you?" Garrett the Johnny Fontane Richards has finally quit whining.

Sawamura has adjusted to US's Bigger Balls. Japanese are smaller.

Duran has been called up.

Houck probably will be next.

Chris Sale is on track.

Life is good.

A 6-3 lefthanded shortstop projected to be #1 pick by many landed on our lap. I wanted pitching but the kid seems to have future in the league.

I'd think there's much more talent gap between Marcelo and Trey Ball than their draft positions, #4 vs #7. Ball set a low bar for future #1 Sox picks.

Cynical me want the Yankees to stay in the race so they can add more payroll, go over the luxury tax threshold and lose their younger talent in a trade. Edited by Nick

If you mean rankings, I entirely agree. Nobody votes on who wins the a Division or who gets to be a wild card. It's all about wins and losses.

Jeez, Nick, that implies you want them to do well in these games against us. You sure that's the position you want to take?

Nope, lose to us and win vs others......I don't believe they can get back in the hunt...too many teams to overcome...Sox, Ray, Blue Jays will not ALL tank.

I just want them to think they can get back in it.

Wild Card Berth, 2nd spot occupied by the A's, Rays 2 1/2 up on the A's.

3 1/2 back, Seattle

4 1/2 back, Yankees, Blue Jays, Guardians

5 1/2 back, Angels

The boat can only hold two passengers....

Boston Red Sox calling up Tanner Houck on Thursday; righty will join Jarren Duran on roster for series vs. Yankees per MassLive.

Nothing much to add......

The call ups indicate that management feels this team has a serious shot at the brass ring, and intends to go for it. We'll see what happens at the deadline. Meanwhile, now is the chance to finish off the Yanks and crush any glimmer of hope they have left.

Well said.

It's time to start taking no prisoners.

The next 15 days will help Bloom decide what needs fixing. I'm sure already has his sights on a few slots. He, opefull, just took care of two slots, today.
