Joel Sherman says the opening day loss exposed the Yankees' two biggest weaknesses:

-"Gleyber Torres is a second baseman playing shortstop"

-"The Yankees remain challenged to score when the ball does not clear a fence"

Sometimes you have to wonder about Cashman's roster construction philosophy.

Also shows how you can hit all the dingers you want, but you still have to be able to put the ball in play with RISP. That offense should not be able to go 1-2-3 with a tying run on 2nd to start the 10th

It's almost as if Cashman has some fundamental weaknesses in his understanding of the game of baseball.

With regard to the shortstop issue, he had a perfectly good shortstop and let him walk, and now Torres is shoehorned into the wrong position.

@PeteAbe

Bogaerts: "We're a team that's going to hit a lot of homers."

Do you have a problem with Bloom's construction?

If our offense is basically home run or nothing like the Yankees, I would have a problem, yes.

Well, when a guy is hitting the corners at 98mph, it does get a little tougher to get that guy home...

He did let Grigorius walk, but with LaMahieu, Torres and the surprising Urshela, he had too many players for 2B/3B who were all still under control. It also hurt (?) that defense that Voit came out of nowhere...

I think that became apparent last season. Yet , he did nothing to rectify it. He seemed more concerned about keeping LeMahieu at second and having first base available for Voit.

I think the root of Cashman's dilemma is his wanting to keep Stanton away from left field. That ties up the DH spot and Voit plays first. I don't know if that is worth the poor defense at short. That can kill you.

Bit of an overreaction from one game. And I never get the fascination that relying on HRs to score is some kind of curse. The teams who win the World Series are consistently near the top of the league in home runs. If it's a contact issue, then sure the Yankees strike out a bunch but that's a league wide issue. Last season the Yankees were 10th in K% (with 1st being the best/lowest) and 13th in 2019, so it's not like they're especially bad. 10th inning aside because that guy the Jays brought in was unhittable yesterday, but during the 7th and 9th innings the Yankees put the ball in play when they needed to but got a double play and a force out at home. Sometime s***** outcomes happen. They went 0-10 with RISP yesterday and were still able to get to extra innings. I don't expect them to bat .000 in those situations forever.

Not really.

Did you realize between 1985 and 2001, no World Series Champion had a player who hit as many as 35 home runs? (Dave Justice did hit 41 in 2000 and won a World Series with the Yankees, but he hit 21 of them as a member of the Guardians.)

And that was during the height of the Steroid Era!! Everybody was hitting 35 home runs!!!

Keep in mind the fellow who started this thread has been trash talking us big time. I couldn't pass up such an opportunity for fun. ;)

Opening Day always seems to get more scrutiny than the games that follow. No reason for it , just the way it is.

Filthy stuff from Kluber. Backdoor sliders, heavy sinker, location solid. 2 innings, an infield hit, a misplayed pop up turned into a single and a HBP. 2 double plays. While the other guys are power, he’s all movement and location. Hope he can stay healthy cause if he can, he will be a find

Really cannot complain about his start. An infield hit. A misplay. One hard hit ball. Lost the zone in the 3rd but recovered. Only run scored due to dumbass catcher. 70 pitches through 4. Have to assume he gets pulled. Kluber is gonna be treated as a 4-5 inning guy likely til June to ensure he can stay healthy

Meteorically stupid for Boone. You’re building Kluber. He goes 4, looks good, but struggled to a degree the last 2 innings and runs up the pitch count. It’s cold as f*** as well. So you decide to have him throw his warm ups and face the beginning of the 5th with the decision that you’ll pull him if a guy gets on? f***ing dumb. First month is for health and building. There’s nothing good that comes out of Kluber throwing with the reaper behind him if a guy gets on. Stupid April management
