Sanchez is back to being terrible at the plate. 4 for his last 30 with 15 K's.

They don't have the balls to start Higashioka, do they?

And to think, defensive-oriented Tyler Flowers is still without a job...

At this point I'd be ok with him hitting .200 as long as he adds 30 HRs, and isn't total ass behind the plate.

Well, the problem is that he struggles to not be a total ass behind the plate...

Judge hasn't played in the last three ST games. Hope we don't get another surprise surgery.

I think the true surprise will be if Judge ever actually plays in three straight games...

I don't think that's possible.

Wilson & Britton start out on the IL.

Taillon pushed back to 6th game.

Voit goes under the knife, tonight.

Wade (career .575 hitter), King (career 7.04 ERA) & Nick Nelson (1.500 career WHIP and 4.71 ERA in AAA) make the roster.

I can see why Yankee fans love their great depth.

Agree about Wade and King, but Nelson is a starter converted to a reliever so can't really read into his numbers while starting. He would probably be a top 3 bullpen option for the Sox 😁

I was being sarcastic, but they don't look too impressive.

King was dynamite in 18 with solid velocity. He had bone spurs removed in 2018 and lost velo. He started to show it again last year. If he can maintained 93-95 mph velocity, he’ll have good results. If he drifts back down to 90, I’m afraid he could be lost. We shall see

FYI mlb.com ranked the Yanks as 3rd best rotation in baseball

That writer and site constantly overrates NY, basically every preseason. Seriously, does anyone besides Yankee fans truly think Cole plus three question marks are better than Scherzer/Strasburg/Corbin/Lester? Fried/Morton/Soroka/Anderson? Giolito/Keuchel/Lynn/Cease? Bieber/Plesac/Civale/McKenzie? The A's???

Do honest Yankee fans even?

fangraphs has the Yankee SP'ers ranked 3rd, too, but mostly on the strength of their depth. They are the only team with 7 pitchers over 1.1.

5.5 Cole

2.7 Kluber

2.1 Montgomery

1.9 Taillon

1.2 German

1.1 Garcia

1.9 Sevy

0.2 King

0.1 Schmidt

(I think Kluber & Montgomery are high, but maybe King & Schmidt are too low.)

Their top 4 (not counting Sevy) is 12.5/ Top 5 is 13.7

With Sevy: Top 4:12.5 / Top 5:14.1

Some teams below the Yanks:

NYM:

Top 4: 14.5 (deGrom, Stroman, Carrasco, Syndergaard, Walker)

Top 5: 15.7 (+Peterson)

Both better than NYY

WSH:

Top 4: 13.3 (Scherzer, Strasburg, Corbin, Letser 0.9)

Top 5: 14.2 (+Ross)

Both better than NYY

CIN:

Top 4: 10.7 (Castillo, Gray, Mahle, Miley)

Top 5: 11.7 (+Lorenzen

CWS:

Top 4: 11.2 (Giolito, Keuchel, Lynn, Cease

Top 5: 12.1 (+Rodon)

ATL:

Top 4: 9.9 (Morton, Fried, Soroka, Anderson)

Top 5: 11.3 (+Smyly)

The Sox are ranked 15th:

2.6 ERod

2.3 Sale

1.9 Eovaldi

1.4 Richards

1.3 Perez

0.7 Pivetta

0.5 Houck

0.3 Seabold

Top 4: 7.2

Top 5: 7.9

Nice research. Still, I wonder if projections consider spring training performances... not stats, but doesn't this month always seem so contradictory when one week a poster says, "Spring training performances don't count" and the next: "Boy, our starters look great!"

Also, despite the numbers, I also wonder: beyond each team's #1 aces, would any manager or fan honestly take the next three Yankee pitchers over, say, Strasburg/Corbin/Lester or Keuchel/Lynn/Cease or Fried/Soroka/Anderson?

Posted

One thing is for sure - the Yankees face a nice test to start the season with the Jays.

I know it doesn't mean much, but the Jays were 16-9 in spring games and the Yanks were 14-12, and stumbled noticeably the last week or so, with nobody hitting.

Bring it on.

That was the point of the data. Other teams have better top 4's and 5's, but the Yankee SP'er depth jumped them to 3rd.

Let's see how much depth plays a role for the top teams and just how good the largely untested Yankee depth does in 2021- not to mention huge question marks like Kluber, Taillon & German.

Stras threw exactly 4 more innings than Kluber last year. Corbin looked eminently hittable and had a velo drop in the sprint. Heck, Max wasn’t vintage last year and he turns 37 in July. And they’ve got zero quality depth behind their top 3 (Lester is cooked FYI).

The Braves lack experience and they’ve got health issues as well. The White Sox are a good argument, but their ceiling isn’t as high. They’re more a steady Eddy rotation. But nobody has the 1-6 or 7 right now with a two time All star returning mid season.

Fangraphs has the Nats with a better top 4 or 5 starters. It's the Yankee depth that jumps them over the Nats in their total projected value.

Yanks:

5.5 Cole

2.6 Kluber

2.1 Montgomery

1.9 Taillon

1.8 Sevy

(1.2 German, 1.1 Garcia)

Nats:

4.7 Scherzer

4.0 Strasburg

3.7 Corbin

0.9 Lester

0.8 Ross

(Fedde 0.3, Armenteros 0.2)

Strasburg and Corbin blow away the Yankee starters below Cole. Better to use the depth argument.

4-7 starter values:

Yanks 6.0

Nats: 2.2

Top 3:

Nats: 12.4

Yanks: 10.2

An ideal day for me would include of: 2 HR, 5 RBI between Judge and Hicks, and then a 10-5 Jays win. :)

I will be listening to John and Suzyn this afternoon, as I am hungry for baseball today, no matter who is playing

Posted
I've listened to the entire game on the Hartford affiliate of WFAN. It's nice to have something on in the background while I work.
