Springer should be the guy the team opens the wallet for and then let’s talk About players who should retire Rich Hill.Boston sports has lost Tom Brady and Mookie Betts can we all agree that we need to make a splash with George Springer ? If you don’t agree ? You are wrong but I won’t tear you down for it .Boston is not the Rays we are not Seattle we are not some small budget fans or team .I spend thousands on tickets on gifts for Christmas supporting this team .I understand we have won world series and divisions .I just want a watchable product ! Can we please stop acting like Boston isn’t starving for a huge star player accusition ? I hope you don’t think I come here to Troll I don’t .I never attack anyone who attacks me here .I have in the past though and can dish it as well .I just choose to ignore as you can .

I do not think that making a big splash is the right way to go. We don't need shiny new toys. We need good value, quality players.

Does anyone watch the Tampa Rays? Plus, it is pretty hard to win without star players. Very very hard.

I can't speak for why the Rays have no fans, but in a rabid baseball city like Boston, if the team is winning, the fans will be there. Yes, it might be harder to win without a player like Mookie, but not impossible. Look no further than the same Rays.

Players are considered " stars " for a reason. It is because they are very good. You are more likely to win and generate fan interest when you have very good players. It is much more difficult to do that with a bunch of jabronis. That should not really be arguable . Obviously , you do have to pay the stars more than you have to pay the jabronis. That's life.

Who said anything about jabronis?

Just because a player is not a superstar doesn't mean he's a jabroni.

The Rays are extremely unusual.

The Sox aren’t a “total yawn” as you’ve got no idea what team will take the field. If Bauer is in Sox red, ERod is back and the Sox sign a couple back end relievers, then you’re gonna be eating your words

MLB radio discussed how the consolidation of the minor leagues will obviously hurt dreams of fringe players who may now never get a chance at pro ball. One guy noted how there have always been players who weren't considered prospects, but were only drafted to fill out minor league rosters -- just so the real prospects had a team and a place to develop.

This sounded like the 2020 Red Sox -- a club that recruited players who weren't actual big leaguers, just so they could surround their handful of bonafides with enough bodies so they could play the games. But this didn't just start with Bloom; remember the last month of 2019, when we were treated to too much Owings, Gorkys, Chacin, Shawaryn, Trevor Kelley and Josh Smith.

After three straight years in first, the '19 Sox were a letdown, but still fun to watch with four stars over .900 OPS and at least one stud on the mound. But let's face it: ownership has been stingy since the '19 trade deadline, when they wouldn't let Dombro add to the bullpen of a team that went 60-46 from May-August...

They wouldn’t let him?

They would have, but he added Cashner ($9.5 mill)...

They let the guy spend like a maniac, so even if they did eventually take the checkbook away, it's hard to place the blame on ownership.

But the buck starts there. Employees are just trying to do their jobs of improving the team, and whether the Sox' new baseball officer's hands are tied, or the old one is allowed to use up resources, finances begin and end with those who sign the checks.

The pandemic is largely to blame for an industry-wide spending freeze -- or at least, abatement (unless you're the Dodgers). But that is also convenient to avoid accusations of collusion on the eve of a new CBA.

As a fan, I'm glad Dombro is back in business. Hopefully he'll be the one to make some moves soon and set the hot stove dominoes in motion.

Thursday. I could never get the hang of Thursdays...

Tuesday - I always answer with Tuesday. I'm right at least once a week.

I don't think that Boston is in possession of many more truly rabid baseball fans than most of our good quality baseball cities. There are likely many thousands of fans who simply would not attend games at Fenway if there were no true super stars competing. Winning is great and obviously appeals to us all but a bunch of successful no names in Boston I don't think will fill those seats. I will say though that at some point many stars were simply no name players. Just the way it is.

It is always good to keep good baseball people in the game which Dombrowski is and always has been.

We still were a top spending team in 2019. Hands may have been tied only after massive spending had already occurred.

Are there only stars and jabronis in your books, Denny?

You could argue that 2011 might have been our most "star-studded" year

The 1978 team was the most star-studded Red Sox team of 'em all, I think (sigh).

The Phillies are allegedly cutting payroll, so that's gonna be interesting...

What brings out the worst in Red Sox fans:

1. slow offseason

2. August/September when Sox are out of the playoff hunt

Depends on how you define 'worst'.

1. Lots of loud complaining.

2. Disappearing.

Maybe change #2 to "Sox starting off slow in April/May"?

Also fans who jump on board when the team actually is winning, which is such a rarity in the sports world...

Please don't go down the pink hat slippery slope.

If nothing's happening and you're on a forum called talksox, what else are you supposed to do:

1. try to initiate sox talk

2. complain about or disparage posters who try to initiate sox talk you disagree with

3. wax nostalgic

I don't see it as a slippery slope...

Is there even a bandwagon at this point? Most people in New England have watched the Sox off and on for their whole lives. Who is left off of the wagon at this point? Liverpool fans?
