SoxProspects updated their rankings.

Mayer - 2

Yorke - 3 was 10, which feels about right because he's been mashing

Downs - 5 was 2, he may drop even further, nightmare season for him

Bello - 6 was 24, I struggle trusting the arms that jump up out of nowhere he's got the tools though

Groome - 9 was 13, he's had a remarkable turnaround

Jordan - 10 was 17, would be nicer if he got more run in Salem

Murphy - 12 was 23, reliever profile probably because of his horrible splits

Wikelman - 14 was 48, see the Bello comment

Winckowski - 16 was 27, I guess it feels right, but once you are this deep into the system a hangnail is the difference in 10 spots

Bleis - 17 was 40, he's being given the "real deal" moniker, Lasciate ogne speranza, voi ch'intrate

Paulino - 21 was NR

Kutter - 25 was NR, probably on the 40 man next season

Walter - 26 was NR, starting to get a lot of press

Are either put on 40 man or traded IMO.

That looks about right.

Let's assume we protect those 7. Here's how the 40 man might shake out before any FAs are signed.

Assume we keep Vaz & Richards options, JD does not opt out and ERod receives and accepts the QO.

We lose Perez (option declined), Ottavino, Santana, Robles, Shaw and Iggy. With 8 players currently on the IL and not counting towards the 40 man roster, and us having 39 listed, now, we will actually be at 41 before adding those 7.

That means 8 players will have to be traded or DFA'd to make it 40, and that's before we add anyone as a free agent.

Who might those 8+ players be? (I think some added for COVID do not need to be DFA'd to be kept in our system.)

Michael Feliz

Jack Lopez

Geoff Hartlieb

Yairo Munoz

Borderline:

Jesson Rosario

Hudson Potts

Austin Davis

Yacksel Rios

Trade?

Brasier

Arauz

Plawecki/Hernandez/Wong (1)

Cordero

If we DFA'd this entire list, it wouldn't materially affect the organization. My guess is they try to keep Rosario around and Maybe Davis/Rios until better options are available.

I think they try to keep the catchers you have listed, unless they want an upgrade over Plawecki.

So, basically, 12 guys. That makes room for the 7 Rule 5 and 4 free agents. Sounds about right- no roster crunch.

We got a logjam of second basemen in the system.

Downs

Cannon

Yorke

McDonough

Koss

Plus some others I have missed. Should be interesting to see how hang’em Chaim handles this going forward.

Jeter has been playing SS, so just keeping him there solves a big part of the problem.

So Bella pitch in Hartford the other night.

Easy velocity, holds it well deep, he was still hitting 100 mph in the 5th. He also fielded his position very well, which I love.

The downside was his maturity, he became visibly frustrated in the first when he struggled with his command, the defense couldn’t make a play and an infield hit loaded the bases.

To his credit, he worked out of it, but he held true to the scouting as a guy who has good stuff but some command issues. If he can improve his control he could be a starter in 2023 on this team.

3 of those guys will never make the bigs.

For the Sox all at once, no.

Downs could play SS, Yorke 2B and one a utility role.

Probably one or two don't do well enough to earn a trip to the bigs, anyway.

Yorke will also most likely be moved off position to LF. If Downs repeats his 2021 performance, he's not a road block to anyone. Cannon is not very good. Koss is a low tier prospect. McDonough is probably a UTIL guy. He's not a 2B only profile.

OTM's look at the FCL season:

https://www.overthemonster.com/2021/9/20/22683326/boston-red-sox-top-prospects-marcelo-mayer-blaze-jordan-wilkelman-gonzalez-paulino-encarnacion

Eddinson Paulino, INF

Paulino is not a big name in this system, though he did get a six-figure bonus out of the Dominican Republic as part of the 2018 signing class. Spending most of his time at third base this year, while also getting time at second and a little at shortstop, he was a monster at the plate. Paulino finished his season hitting .336/.436/.549, showing total control of the strike zone while also making consistently hard contact.

Juan Daniel Encarnacion, RHP

Encarnacion had a solid enough pro debut in the DSL, but he took things to another level at the complex this year. He finished his season with a 2.96 ERA with a 30 percent strikeout rate and a six percent walk rate. The long ball proved to be a bit of an issue, but his ability to miss bats was surprising and catapulted him to an impressive run.

Phillip Sikes, OF

The team’s 18th round pick out of TCU, it was clear he was just far too advanced for FCL competition, but there just wasn’t room for him to play at Salem. And so he was left on the complex, and he just destroyed the league. He finished his season hitting .293/.462/.622.

Are either put on 40 man or traded IMO.

I have serious doubts that Gilberto Jimenez (86Ks in 408 PA in A ball and has no power) is going to be put on the 40 man roster. Not so sure he is high on anyone’s Rule 5 radar just yet…

He's so far away from the bigs, he'd be a total stash on a 26 man roster and probably get very little playing and development time.

I guess he could be one of those "hope he flies under the radar type players on rule 5 draft day.

That would free up one slot more. Is it worth keeping Potts or Rosario vs maybe losing Jimenez?

I know other teams have roster crunches coming up around rule 5 protection day, and every year I suggest we make a 2 for 1 deal or a protected player for a far away prospects not up for rule 5, this year, to create another slot, but it never happens.

In theory, we trade 2 from Potts, Rosario and Jimenez for one "better" prospects.

Other options might be to trade someone like JD and Rosario for a high-priced pitcher that offsets the financial balance, then sign Schwarber.

Yes, that's why I put "or traded" in there.

Nobody ever does these types of trades, as they are struggling to cram their best players into 40 slots. They have to really like our players to take 2 for 1, since they must then chop one more guy off their list.

BTW, what teams have the weakest 37-40th slots on this winter's roster?

(One might place the Sox in the top 10 for slots 39-40.)

Miguel Bleis homered (4) and scored three runs in today's 8-7 DSL Red Sox Red loss. The 17-year-old centerfielder has slashed .264/.344/.453 over 122 PA so far in 2021.

He seems like a hyped prospect to me. I was hoping they would trade Jimenez at the deadline but alas he is still here--maybe no one wanted him.

Maybe Bloom wanted too much for him or realizes our OF depth problem is a high priority.

Jimenez is ranked 7th by Soxprospects. 10th by MLB.com, 8th by prospectslive, and 10th by BA.

That's high, but that's not super hyping a guy up either. That's a range you're in if you have talent but aren't a blue-chip prospect either. I think he's appropriately ranked and has the potential to take off if the power comes. Here is what SP has to say about him.

" High ceiling, low floor. Wide range of outcomes due to how raw he is and how much development he has left. Can dream on him becoming an everyday center fielder who adds value at the plate and in the field. One of the highest-ceiling players in the system and could establish himself nationally with a strong full-season debut. Will flash four average-to-better tools at least, but is raw at present. One of, if not the most athletic player in the system. Improved physicality and changes at the plate give him a much better chance to hit and to hit for some power as well. Needs work to refine his defensive game, but has the athletic ability and arm strength you look for in a centerfielder. Possesses great work ethic."

That's the type of guy who is usually the 2nd or 3rd piece of a bigger trade.

The issue, now, is to protect him from rule 5 or not. He is clearly not close to MLB ready, but with 26 man rosters, maybe one GM sees enough potential to grab him. Sitting on a bench isn't going to help him develop, either.

Ideally, we leave him unprotected and nobody claims him, and the choice is put off another year. By 2022, we'll know more, and other GMs will, too.

Akil Baddoo was taken after OPSing 683 in High A.

Jimenez OPS by month:

May 815

June 611

July 752

Aug 827

Sept 896

OPS 538 vs LHP, 805 vs RHP

He has the more conventional swing when hitting RH, but is not making good contact. As a lefty, he's slappy and has a high OBP. The question is if that is sustainable or not.

This has been a disappointing year for him.
